Name: Chapter 5 Lesson 1 1. Where did England first try to establish a colony? Roanoke Island 2. Why did the English want to establish colonies in North America? They wanted to find gold and other natural resources. 3. What was making Spain angry with England? What did the king decide to do? England was building colonies in the Americas and stealing gold and silver from their ships. He decided to attack England 4. What advantages did the English have over the Spanish in the Battle of the Spanish Armada? What were the results of this battle? The English had smaller, faster ships and more powerful guns The English won 5. What did the settlers of the Jamestown colony hope to find when they came to Virginia? They hoped to find gold. 6. How did John Smith help the Jamestown colony survive? He helped the colonists build houses, dig wells, plant crops, and fish. He began trading with the Native Americans 7. In order to survive, the colonists began planting crops. What was Jamestown, Virginia s first cash crop? tobacco

8. To keep up with the demand to grow more tobacco for export to Europe, farmers brought over indentured servants from England. What is an indentured servant? Someone who agrees to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of the ocean voyage to North America. 9. What did most of the indentured servants hope to do when they were free? Why did many of the indentured servants never get their freedom? They hoped to buy land of their own They died from disease, overwork, and mistreatment by their masters. 10. What is the House of Burgesses? Why did the Virginia Company set up the House of Burgesses? It was the first law-making assembly in an English colony They set this up to attract more settlers to their colony.

Trading beaver furs 5. Who did Henry Hudson sail for? What was he searching for? The Dutch (the Netherlands) New water routes to Asia (the Northwest Passage) 6. What was the most important Dutch colony in North America? Why was its location important? New Amsterdam The Dutch could control all trade on the Hudson River 7. What helped the colony of New Amsterdam to grow? They encouraged people from many countries to settle in New Amsterdam.

Ch. 5 Lesson 3 1. Who are the Separatists? Why did they decide to leave England? The Separatists were a group of people who wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England. They wanted to worship as they pleased 2. What did John Smith name the region the Pilgrims sailed to? What did the Pilgrims name their new colony? The region is called New England. The Pilgrims named their colony Plymouth. 3. Before landing in American, Pilgrim Leaders wrote the Mayflower Compact. What is the Mayflower Compact? A plan of government written by the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower. 4. What problems did the Pilgrims face when they first arrived at Plymouth? They faced freezing weather, hunger, and disease 5. How did the Wampanoag help the Pilgrims to survive? They showed the Pilgrims where to hunt and fish and how to grow corn 6. Who were the Puritans? Why did they decide to build their own colony in North America? The Puritans were a group of people who wanted to purify the Church of England. They wanted religious freedom 7. How were the Puritans able to avoid starvation upon their arrival in the Massachusetts Bay Colony? They sent a small group of settlers to start the colony before the others arrived and they brought plenty of food and supplies

8. What caused the Massachusetts Bay Colony to thrive? Fishing, fur trading, and shipbuilding 9. What was at the center of a Puritan town? What was the building used for? A meetinghouse used for religious services and town meetings. 10. The Puritans were the first to build public schools in the English colonies. Why did they do this? They wanted their children to learn how to read so they could read the Bible and understand the laws of the community.
