COURSE DESCRIPTION French 2H is an accelerated course designed to challenge the student who, during his/her first year, has actively participated in class, mastered the grammar and vocabulary presented in level one and/or demonstrated the ability to advance more rapidly than the average college preparatory student. The teacher will aid students in acquiring the following skills: increased oral proficiency on a variety of topics, an expanded vocabulary, the ability to read selections appropriate to intermediate level students and increased ability to write essays. The course materials are designed to stimulate conversation and to perfect that skill, striving to imitate the native speaker s pronunciation, accent, and rhythm, as the student s abilities increase. Students will also become more informed about Francophone communities. Students will further develop their ability to express themselves in spoken and written French. Prerequisite: Intro to French 1 and consent of the instructor II. III. IV. COURSE GOALS Course goals are based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) standards (which have been aligned with Common Core Standards) and the Illinois Learning Standards for World Languages. A. Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations. This includes interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. B. Write effectively in a variety of situations. This includes interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. C. Use the target language to acquire, assess, and communicate information. D. Appreciate the target cultures in everyday situations. E. Understand the use of printed and spoken language to effectively communicate ideas in formal and informal situations. INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY Students will be given opportunities daily to read, write, listen and speak in French. These opportunities can come in the form of individual activities, group/cooperative activities, total physical response, recitation/repetition and lecture type learning experiences. Students are expected to participate in all skills and activities or assignments that are given on a particular day. MAJOR COURSE PROJECTS ANDASSIGNMENTS This list is not meant to be exhaustive but to demonstrate what may happen during any unit. A. Oral Projects a. B. Written Assignments a. Examples: note-taking, text and workbook activities, short paragraphs, papers on various topics C. Tests and Quizzes a. Tests will be given for most projects, in addition to or instead of projects, depending on the unit of study. Quizzes can be given as often as once a week on the current topic of study within the unit. D. Class Participation a. Examples: Bell ringers, class assignments from text and/or workbook, verbal activities (alone or with a partner/group) such as responding to teacher questions or having short conversations with a neighbor. V. ASSESSMENT PLAN A. Point System 1. Grades are based on a total point system. 2. Points for individual assignments can range anywhere from 5 points for a bellringer to 100+ points for a test or project. 3. Points for quizzes, tests, and projects will be weighted more than points assigned to homework and classwork. B. Grading Scale Grade Scale Description A 93-100% Exceeds Expectations; Independent learner; superior work; all work completed on time at an exceptional level of quality and effort; B 87-92% Meets Expectations; Semi-independent learner; above average work; all work completed on time; did quality work with a few flaws; C 78-86% Passing but does not meet some standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed on time showing average effort; D 70-77% Passing but only meets minimum standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed on time showing average effort; F <69% Failing, does not meet minimum standards; Failure; does not meet standards or expectations; C. Components of the Grade a. 30% of the quarter grade is based on the following: i. Homework ii. Classwork iii. Daily bell ringers b. 70% of the quarter grade is based on the following: i. Quizzes ii. 2 nd quarter grade 40% Semester Exam 20% Final Semester Grade 100% E. Re-Do Policy 1. Students will be given an opportunity to redo major course projects, tests and quizzes to meet standards. The student must show that effort has been made to improve. The redo opportunity will be rescinded if a student does not show effort or abused redo opportunities. 2. If a student chooses to redo an assignment or quiz, the highest grade will be given. A deadline will be given for redo work. If the student does not meet the redo deadline, the opportunity will be rescinded. 3. Redo opportunities will not be given for projects or work that has been completed by cheating of any kind, including but not limited to copying off another student s work and use of any sort of translation program, device, or app (including Google Translate). VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Materials: Each student must bring the following to class daily: 1. Textbook 2. Workbook 3. Folder 4. Pen and pencil 5. Paper/Notebook Madame Lowery HIGHLY recommends a Frenchspecific notebook for note taking. B. Make-Up Work Policy Student responsibility for make-up work is however many days the student is absent, the student has that many days to make up the work: i.e., if you are absent three days, you have three days to make up the work. It is the student s responsibility to coordinate make-up times for any missed quizzes, tests, or presentations. C. Late Work Policy 1. Homework and Classwork Generally homework is due the day after it is assigned (assigned Monday, due Tuesday). Classwork is due the day it is assigned. If a student turns their work in late, one letter grade will be deducted for each day it is late. No late work will be taken after the Friday of the week it was due. For example: a homework assignment given on Tuesday will not be taken on the following Monday; it is expected that it will be completed and turned in on Wednesday but will be taken up to Friday for a reduced grade. 2. Projects Projects are due on the due date that is discussed in class and written down on the project description. Every day that a project is late, one letter grade is removed from the score. For example, if a student s project would have received a B based on the rubric standards but was one day late, it would then INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 2H SYLLABUS Page 3

receive a C. Two days late would make it a D, etc. VII. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS The following rules are not expected to supplant or replace Southland College Prep s behavior expectations, but to supplement them. School rules are always in effect at all times. Additionally, rules will be discussed with students periodically to revise them as needed. A. Teacher Creed 1. As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom stopping me from teaching for any reason whatsoever. 2. As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom stopping another student from learning for any reason whatsoever. 3. As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom doing anything that is not in the best interest of this class or in your best interest. B. Classroom Rules 1. We all have the right to learn. a. Students are expected to actively participate (electronic devices put away, questions asked when needed, etc.). b. Students are expected to come prepared to class (paper, writing utensils, etc.). c. Students are expected to share resources (pencil sharpeners, hand sanitizer, teacher, etc.). 2. We all have the right to be safe, physically and psychologically. a. Students are expected to respect people s personal space and belongings; hands, feet, etc. are kept to themselves. b. Students are expected to respect the classroom environment; this includes but is not limited to keeping their desk area neat and clean, using classroom equipment appropriately (don t run with scissors), etc. c. Students are expected to respect the opinions of others. d. Students are expected to respect the privacy of others. 3. We all have the right to be respected. a. Students are expected to address people by name only. b. Students are expected to allow speakers to finish before giving their contribution. c. Students are expected to act and speak with good purpose; this includes but is not limited to thinking before speaking, avoiding gossip, etc. C. Per Southland policy, passes will ONLY be given if there is an emergency that requires students to leave the classroom. Students will receive 3 bathroom passes per quarter; after they use them, they will not be allowed more trips to the bathroom during that quarter. Madame Lowery will determine whether the situation qualifies as an emergency on a case-by-case basis. Note: forgetting supplies or books, needing something for another class, etc. are not considered emergencies. VIII. PARENT COMMUNICATION INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 2H SYLLABUS Page 4

Strong parent-teacher communication is key to student success in the classroom. This syllabus (outlining course requirements and student behavior) is sent home to give a clear view of the expectations and responsibilities in class. You will also be able to find this document on the class website, which I encourage you and your student to check frequently for important information. Progress and grade reports are sent home, and parents are also contacted by phone, email, or letter when necessary.
