Lewis & Clark Law School Career & Professional Development Center Alumni Salary Survey 0

0 Alumni Salary Survey Produced by: Career & Professional Development Center Lewis & Clark Law School 005 SW Terwilliger Blvd. Portland, OR 979 (50) 768-6608 lscs@lclark.edu

Introduction Lewis & Clark Law School s Alumni Salary Survey provides information about the earnings and fields of work or our graduates in the first seven years after graduation. This survey is not based on a scientific sampling of graduates and the results do not show the exact distribution of our graduates. The results, however, can give insight into the general trends in employment and earnings when viewed with the appropriate skepticism that any unscientific survey should receive. The Survey In June and July 0, alumni from the classes of 005-0 were invited to participate in an online survey. Invitations were sent to graduates across the nation and internationally. The survey requested background information about the respondent including class year and location along with information about kind of employer, kind of work, and compensation. For the first time this year, we collected information about graduates who are not currently working. Invitations were delivered by email to alumni with known addresses and the survey was conducted through Survey Monkey. The survey resulted in 496 usable responses this is approximately one-third of the number of graduates from the past seven years. Some responses did not include answers to all questions leading to different total numbers of responses by question. Overview At the time of our last Alumni Salary Survey in 00, we were just under two years after the financial collapse of the fall of 008. Now two years later, we present the results of our new survey. The differences and similarities may offer insight into the state of legal employment. Background The geographic distribution of responses remains strongest in the Pacific Northwest 76% which is only slightly lower than the 79% in 00. Other geographic areas remain largely constant with the slight loss in the Pacific Northwest being picked up in the Washington, DC area (reported in the South category). Although this is not a large reduction in Pacific Northwest, it represents about.5 times as many graduates reporting living in the DC area. Employer Types The distribution of graduates between employer types remained largely unchanged from 00. The only differences were a slight reduction (%) in graduates reporting in house Legal work. This drop was offset with very slight increases in non-legal business work and government positions. For the first time, not currently employed graduates were tracked through the survey and represent 6% of respondents. Between 00 and 0, the median reported salary for Academic, legal Business & Industry positions, and non-legal Business & Industry positions remained constant. Government and Public Interest showed a 5% and % increase in median reported salary respectively, and Law Firms saw a 6% decline in median salary. 0 Alumni Salary Survey

Salary by Class Year The overall median for all reported salaries is virtually unchanged from 00 to 0, and comparing the same distance from graduation, median salaries have remained the same in all but one year with fluctuations up and down by a few thousand dollars. The only significant salary change occurred with graduates who have been out for seven years comparing class of 00 graduates from the 00 survey to class of 005 graduates from the 0 survey. Graduates seven years after graduation in 0 reported a median salary $,500 lower than their counterparts did in 00. This is a 5% reduction in salary. Billable Hour Expectations and Achievements Both the 00 survey and the new 0 survey show a difference between the number of graduates expected to report between,600 and,800 billable hours a year and the number who achieve that number. In 00 8 percentage points separated the expected and reported amounts; in the 0 results this under-representation fell to 8 percentage points. Other Data Data on solo practitioner and contract attorney incomes, Portland firm salaries by years of practice and geographic salary distributions are also supplied. Law firm and government salaries are further broken down by geographic area and years of practice. Extreme caution should be used with the geographic salary distributions as many categories outside the Portland metropolitan area are represented by one or two salary reports. 0 Alumni Salary Survey
