Land Use Changes (LUC) in developing countries are: - faster and widespread; - often not surveyed for lack of data and monitoring programs; In tropical coastal regions LUC can be a threat for the fragile marine ecosystem of the coral reef

Introduction Study Area Methodology & Results Web GIS application Conclusions Republic of Maldives Small Island Developing States Increase of the LUC in the last decades due to: - Population growth - Tourism growth All the LUC happened without monitoring programs. There were no Land Use national map and no LUC data.

National Area: 859,000 Km 2 Only 1% is land with an elevation of 1 m above the sea level 1190 islands: - 880 uninhabited - 200 inhabited - 110 resort

The islands types are easily distinguishable using Remote Sensing Data Uninhabited Inhabited Resort

The study was divided in 4 steps 1 STEP: - Choice of appropriate Remote Sensing Data; - Creation of a Land Use Classification; - Images classification; 2 STEP: - Fieldwork, collection of Ground Control Points; 3 STEP: - Post-Classification Comparison to detect LUC; 4 STEP: - Realization of a Web GIS application;

ESRI Basemap: World Imagery Free using ArcGIS Coverage 80% of the Maldivian islands High-resolution DigitalGlobe Images WV1, WV2 Metadata-enable

Land Use classes Hierarchical Classification: LEVEL I 1. URBAN OR BUILD UP LAND 2. AGRICULTURAL LAND 3. HERBACEUS UP-LAND 4. SHRUBLAND 5. FOREST LAND 6. BARREN LAND 7. WETLAND 8. INFRASTRUCTURE 9. CLOUD
