Presentation Dear Colleagues, on behalf of the SOI Board, I wish to express our warmest welcome to the International Congress, an event that confirms and consolidates once again the commitment of the Società Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI) for the promotion of the visual wellness in Italy as well as the support and protection of the profession of ophthalmologists. It is a special edition, celebrating 10 years of cooperation and scientific exchange with the ophthalmologists from all over the world. A testimony of this is the 17 th SOI/OSN/AICCER Annual Meeting with a live surgery broadcast from the theatres of the Casa di Cura Igea, offered by Mr. Sandro Vergani: a two-day full immersion, from Friday 25 (8.00 am 6.00 pm) to Saturday 26 (8.00 am 1.00 pm). During Session 35, the traditional SOI Awards will be offered to: Stephen S. Lane, professor at the Minnesota University, for the Benedetto Strampelli SOI Medal Lecture entitled New Advances in Cataract and IOL Surgery Going from Good to Great by the Integration of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies; Josè Cunha-Vaz, Benedetto Strampelli SOI Medal Lecture entitled New Advances in Cataract and IOL Surgery Going from Good to Great by the Integration of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies; Josè Cunha-Vaz, professor at the Coimbra University, for the Gian Battista Bietti SOI Medal Lecture, entitled Diabetic Retinopathy. Clinical Phenotypes and Biomarkers of Progression; Bruce E. Spivey, President of the International Council of Ophthalmology for the SOI Honorary Award in Ophthalmology ; Sergio Bove, General Manger of Alcon Italia, for the SOI Award A life Spent Serving Ophthalmology. During Session 36, the Awarding Ceremony continues with the SOI Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award offered to Giorgio Paolo Coggi Berzetti for his activity of over 12 years spent taking care of needy people, together with Medici Volontari Italiani (Italian Volunteer Physicians). Last but not least, young Claudia Bruè will receive the SOI Mario Gelsomino Award, during Session 44 on Saturday morning. Comparing International experiences is the leit motiv of the Symposium carried out in cooperation with the American Academy of Ophthalmology on Guidelines (S. 19), during which the best clinical evidences will be shown, taking into account the risks and benefits of treatments and of diagnostic tests as well as the possible medical and legal implications. Ninety-six events, 36 of which are monothematic courses, 10 institutional courses and 47 sessions, together with encounters and meetings, through which the Scientific Society aims at tackling the several ophthalmological themes and expressing the issues of the whole sector. A total of 133 hours of professional updating, which provide 115,5 CME credits as well as 21 EACCME credits. Furthermore, the participants to the surgery sessions will have the opportunity to access the Distance Learning route Cataract Surgery free of charge, which enables to acquire 13 CME credits more. Over 27 Monothematic Societies have adhered to the 10 th edition of the SOI International Congress, certifying the importance of an event where the whole category of ophthalmological doctors meets. The congress route opens with the specialist session dedicated to endovitreal therapies (S. 1) in the Plenary Hall (Auditorium) from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and it closes with the Subspecialty Day dedicated to the annex therapies (S. 45) on Saturday in Sala Rossa 1 from 8.00am to 1.15pm. Every day, in 10 congress halls working simultaneously, the training sessions offer different theme routes at a fast pace: 23 May: Retina day, surgical retina, cornea and ocular surgery, neurophthalmology, genetics in ophthalmology, glaucoma, refractive and cataract surgery, orbit 24 May: Surgery and medical retina, uveitis, cornea and ocular surface, ipovision, pediatric ophthalmology, refractive surgery. 25 May: Refractive and cataract surgery live, cornea, instrumental diagnostics, uveitis, pediatric ophthalmology. 26 May: Refractive and cataract surgery live, orbit and ophthalmoplastic, ocular tumors, pediatric ophthalmology, cornea. The SOI Congress also deals with the relationship as well as the interaction with the operators in this field, through a large exhibition area displayed at Floor 1, that I encourage you to visit. Before taking leave, I am pleased to remind you one of the most important appointments of our association experience, i.e. the Members Assembly, taking place on Thursday 24 in the Plenary Hall (Auditorium) at 12.15pm. I wish you a fruitful congress and see you in Rome (28 November 1 December) for the 92 nd SOI National Congress. Matteo Piovella Presidente SOI 5

SOI Award "A Life Spent Serving Ophthalmology" 2012 SOI Award A Life Spent Serving Ophthalmology 2012 Sergio Bove Born in Salerno in 1960, married to Gemma with two daughters, Alessandra and Beatrice. After secondary school at the age of 19, moved to the United States where in 1983 he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from New York University. Based on his business studies, started his career in an American Multinational Company (American National Can) in Salerno dealing in metallic packaging, occupying positions of ever-increasing responsibility in Finance until 1986. After that, moved to Milan where he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Management at the Bocconi University. Married in 1987 and, in 1989, moved definitively to Milan, where he now lives with his family. Joined Alcon in 1990, where he started his career as Finance Director with responsibility for Finance, IT, Logistics, Personnel and Customer Service. At that time Alcon had a turnover of 6 million Euro and employed about 30 people. Over the five years he held this position the company doubled its turnover and number of employees. During this period he contributed to the creation of the back office organisation needed to sustain this fast development. Alcon Surgical Division was created in 1991; in June 1995 he was appointed to be its Director. Over the following four years in the position, he made a fundamental contribution to the growth of the sales and marketing organisation though ongoing development of the sales network, close relations with key opinion leaders and the development of specialized marketing. The launch of the Legacy Phaco Emulsifier, the Accurus Vitrectomy System, the Custom Pak as well as the Acrysof lens give a great contribution to the acceptance of Phaco and small incision as the preferred surgical techniques. Appointed General Manager of Alcon Italia in 1999, a position he still holds. With regard to the pharmaceutical market, the anti-glaucoma products Travatan, Duotrav and Azarga were launched and a second line of representatives was created for the promotion of non-glaucoma products such as Systane, Vigamox and Nevanac. In 2003 Alcon became the leading ophthalmic pharmaceutical company (in units) and in 2010 became market leader in glaucoma (in units). Confirmed in his position in June 2011, following the entry into the Novartis Group and the Alcon/Ciba Vision merger in June. Today Alcon Italia has a turnover of around 280 million Euro and employs 320 people. Characterized by strong sense of family and ethics - loves his work and dedicates most of his free time to his family, this year he will have his 25th wedding anniversary. Loves reading and watching good films and shares his family s passion for travel, taking every new opportunity to get to know new places and cultures. 13
