This unique collaboration is the first of its kind between the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, USA and three prestigious organizations in India: Sankara Eye Care Institutions, Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, and Chitkara University. November February 2015 The program is designed for practitioners with a twoyear diploma who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor s Degree in Optometry. It will be offered in four locations: Bangalore, Ludhiana, Anand and Application Deadline: August 1, 2013 Guntur. 2 Admission criteria The admission criteria for acceptance in the BSc in Optometry Degree Completion Program follow: Completed application form Transcript of a two-year diploma in optometry Fluency in spoken and written English all classes and program material will be delivered in English No past history of professional misconduct ASCO India will screen every applicant s transcript. The analysis and supporting documents will be shared with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, which has the final authority for transcript acceptance. BASIC SCIENCES This module covers foundational topics, such as general physiology, pathology and pathophysiology; principles and applications of pharmacology; human anatomy and neuroscience; immunology; and ocular anatomy and physiology. PRACTICE OF OPTOMETRIC MEDICINE This module includes courses related to clinical techniques and their application to the screening and diagnosis of ophthalmic conditions, such as an extended advanced clinical procedures lecture and the clinical procedures laboratory. Program Description OPTOMETRIC APPLICATIONS AND OPHTHALMIC DISEASE This module emphasizes ophthalmic applications and includes ocular biology, anterior and posterior segment disease; clinical medicine and disease manifestations; glaucoma; optic nerve disorders, trauma and emergency care; cataracts and geriatric care; advanced contact lens applications; and public health issues in eye care. OPHTHALMIC APPLICATIONS OF THE MEDICAL LITERATURE This module includes the evidence-based practice course in which students will acquire the skill set in order to apply information gleaned from the medical literature to patient care. FOUNDATIONS OF THE VISUAL SCIENCES This module includes courses that relate to the visual sciences and their applications in optometric care, such as normal and abnormal binocular vision, vision rehabilitation, and applications and complications of contact lenses. GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES The Pennsylvania Department of Education in the USA requires 40 general education credits - the equivalent of 600 hours in a Bachelor of Science Degree Program. To meet this requirement, faculty from Chitkara University will deliver the general education courses concurrently with the optometry courses. Details will be provided by Sankara Eye Care Institutions and Chitkara University.
3 lectures Faculty integrate basic and visual sciences in a compelling, case-based format with clinical applications. Basic science courses set the stage for primary eye care. Students learn about the key areas of primary eye care: anterior and posterior segment conditions, oculo-systemic disease, neuro-ophthalmic disease, contact lenses, pediatrics, vision training and perception, low vision, and more. The courses are taught by world-renowned clinicians, researchers and educators who are leaders in their fields. Many of Salus University s instructors wrote the textbooks commonly used at schools of optometry. Clinical diagnostic procedures are presented during one-week sessions in Sankara Eye Care Institutions four facilities. Training encompasses all aspects of diagnostic skills: labs Problem-focused examination theory Subjective, objective assessment plan (SOAP) format Infection control External examination Slit lamp biomicroscopy Anterior segment ocular health assessment Goldman tonometry Gonioscopy Posterior pole health assessment Slit lamp indirect ophthalmoscopy Binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy Fundus and peripheral retinal contact ophthalmoscopy Dilated biomicroscopy with a non-contact fundus lens The labs will emphasize current standards of care. Faculty will also address the methods of practice in the context of available instrumentation and ophthalmic agents in India. Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry INDIA The Association of Schools & Colleges of Optometry India is an apex organization with 39 members that deliver two year diploma programs and four-year degree programs. Its mission is to raise awareness of optometry s role as an independent eye and vision care profession. In 2009, we developed the Common Minimum Optometry Curriculum (CMOC) and identified the education needed for optometrists to provide effective optical technology services, visual function services and ocular diagnostic services. ASCO India endorses this BSc in Optometry degree completion program.
6 Partnership for Public Health Sankara Eye Care Institutions INDIA The Sankara Eye Care Institutions India founded Sankara College of Optometry in The hospital network features a team of 125 doctors, 600 paramedical professionals and 275 support staff who have collectively treated more than 40 million patients in 35 years. It has specialty clinics in cataract, cornea and external diseases, glaucoma, low vision, orbital and occuloplastic surgery, ocular oncology, pediatric ophthalmology, uveitis and vitreoretinal surgery. Sankara College of Optometry offers a BSc program in optometry, affiliated to RGUHS at Bangalore. It also offers a four-year BSc (Honours) program in optometry in collaboration with Chitkara University. We recognize the public health imperative of training more optometrists to screen and diagnose ophthalmic conditions. Hence, we have entered a dynamic partnership to improve the visual health and well-being of the people of India. Students will attend lectures and labs at four different facilities outfitted with lecture halls, conference rooms, state-of-the-art technology with web-streaming and telemedicine capabilities, and well-equipped clinics. Chitkara University INDIA The School of Health Sciences at Chitkara University is one of the largest health institutes dedicated exclusively to the education of allied health professionals in northern India. Our programs are a blend of both theory and practice the theoretical knowledge being provided through internal and external faculties, and practical experience being delivered with the help of our industry partners. We have strong industry collaborations with industry leaders in healthcare management, namely Fortis Healthcare and Sankara Eye Care Institutions (SECI). Now is the time to increase the scale of human resources capable of responding to India s eye and vision care needs. Our involvement in this educational program underscores our commitment to public health. 7 Bachelor of Science in Optometry Degree Completion Program Course Fees and Payment Information The amounts and payment dates for the tuition, administrative fee and graduation fee follow: Tuition charged by Salus University: USD $4,000. Must be paid in full by September 13, Administrative fee charged by Sankara Eye Care Institutions (SECI): USD $1,000. Must be paid in full by September 13, Graduation fee charged by Salus University: USD $167. Must be paid in full by March 7, The tuition and administrative fee include all lectures, practical training, study material and access charges. The above figures do not include boarding, lodging, travel or personal expenses. The tuition and administrative fee must be paid in full upon admission to the course - after your application has been accepted and you have satisfied all entry requirements no later than September 13, The graduation fee must be paid in full by March 7, The currency conversion to US dollars is equivalent to the Indian Rupee exchange rate on the day of payment. All payments will be collected by Sankara Eye Care Institutions, which will forward the tuition and graduation fees to Salus University.
