general RoHS statement
Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive Directive: Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Art.4 (1) All Member states shall ensure, that the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE, in electric and electronic equipment is substituted on 1. July 2006 Enactment: February 2003
Introduction The increased consumer and commercial demand for electric and electronic products, coupled with shorter product-lifecycles, led to a sharp rise in electronic waste. Much of this waste contains substances which are hazardous to humans and environment. Driven by the desire for better environmental protection the EC issued RoHS directive in February 2003. Since December 2004, all SUYIN products are according to RoHS SUYIN s continuous commitment to develop environmentally friendly products was already demonstrated in 2001 by material selection criteria which are according to international environmental protection standards. In July 2003, SUYIN s efforts were acknowledged by being certified as a SONY Green Partner. SUYIN was among the first connector manufacturers to early implement RoHS. In a smooth transition, SUYIN products were adapted to the requirements of RoHS and leadfree soldering. On customer demand SUYIN is still providing non-rohs components for certain applications.
RoHS restricted substances The European Union regulations set maximum concentration limits on hazardous materials used in electrical and electronic equipment. Substance MCV* Possible components Lead (Pb) 0.1 % Solders, termination coatings, pigments Mercury (Hg) 0.1 % Batteries, sensors, fluorescent lamps Cadmium (Cd) 0.01 % Solders, coatings, contacts Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6 + ) 0.1 % Anti-corrosive coatings (e.g. on Zinc, Aluminum) Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) 0.1 % Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE) 0.1 % * Maximum Concentration Value (MCV) by weight: 0,1% 1g / kg 1000 ppm Fire retardants used in PCB boards, plastic materials, cables, etc.
RoHS and alternating requirements Some customers may require: tighter material limits than specified in RoHS, control limits for additional materials beyond those identified in RoHS, products not conforming the RoHS requirements (depending on customer application and existing exemptions for RoHS). Please see this anonymized comparison of alternating requirements:
Changes for Soldering Process Soldering temperature Increased soldering temperature with 265 C Higher requirements on plastic materials Not the peak temperature is the critical parameter but the amount of heat (additional heat x time) during soldering process Soldering material Appropriate solder pastes have to be used There exist exemptions for lead in high melting temperature solders (tin-lead alloys containing more than 85% lead) for various applications e.g. chip manufacturing, servers, storage array systems
Risk of Tin Whiskers Tin Whiskers are conductive crystals (micro crystalline structures) that can increasingly occur at lead free soldering process and cause shortcircuits at fine pitch applications. The percentage of tin whiskers is increased when using pure tin. How to avoid Tin Whiskers: Connector maker: using matt tin plating reduces the risk of tin whisker. Customer: before soldering apply post-baking process (1h at 150 C) Applications with current >50mA vaporize tin whiskers.
Recommended Reflow Soldering Profile SUYIN products are manufactured in a hightemperature plastic (e.g. LCP) to withstand the higher temperatures for leadfree soldering.
Reverse Compatibility and Labeling Reverse Compatibility with Tin-Lead Processes: The standard RoHS compliant plating material used for the majority of commercial products is 100% matt tin, although other alternatives are available (silver, palladium, gold etc.). These materials are compliant with leadfree soldering and FULLY REVERSE COMPLIANT with traditional tin-lead solder processes.
