NCHA Super Stakes Non- Pro champion Skip Queen set the pace in the first bunch of the second day of Non- Pro competition and was never lapped. His 219-point score on his Super Stakes champion, Sister CD, sired by CD Olena, topped the first go-round. I just show up and hop on him and show, said Queen, who knew the cattle had been tough on the first day of competition, when he checked the scores online. I tried not to even think about it because we all have to show on the same cattle, he added. I try not to get bogged down on the negatives and just go with the flow because I know he s going to do his part. Queen purchased Sister CD, a product of Bar H Ranche s magic cross of CD Olena and Dual Pep (his dam is the Dual Pep daughter Little Baby Sister) last summer, while Paul Hansma, the gelding s trainer, was showing Rockin By Choice, owned by Queen and his wife Elizabeth, as champion of the NCHA Derby. Hansma won the Abilene Spectacular and the Breeders Continued on page 2
Non-pro first go-round leaders include, left to right: Linda Holmes, who scored 218.5 points on Nurse Nellie, by Dual Pep, and 216 points on Halreycious, by Dual Rey; Will Arthur with 218.5 on Nurse Mate, by Smart Mate, and 216.5 on Quixotes Catman, by High Brow Cat; and Jim Vangilder with 217.5 on Me Tele San, by Lenas Telesis. Derby Non-Pro from page 1 Invitational on Sister CD, rode the horse as co-champion of the NCHA Open Gelding Stakes, and is a leader on him going into the Open Derby Semi- Finals. Queen also rode the gelding as reserve champion of the Augusta Futurity. He s a good individual, said Hansma of Sister CD. He has always been talented and I think Skip has helped him a bunch. Elizabeth Queen qualified for the second go-round of non-pro competition riding CD Hombre, another CD Olena son. The Queens live in Lipan, TX; Skip works in the family-owned timber business headquartered in South Carolina. Holmes grows her own Linda Holmes was a top first go-round contender on two horses that she raised on her ranch in Longmont, CO. Yesterday, Nurse Nellie, by Dual Pep, carried Holmes to mark 218.5 points, the second highest score of the first go-round. On Tuesday, Holmes earned 216 points on Halreycious, by Dual Rey. My trainers had her ready and I didn t do anything but get on her, said Holmes of Nurse Nellie, the earner of more than $36,000 and a half-sister to Jacque Accomazzo... Other non-pro leaders include, left to right: Julie Hansma, with 217.5 on Bob Dualin, by Dual Pep; Tommy Manion, with 217 on Evalita, by Smart Lil Ricochet; and Kelly Simpkins, with 216.5 points on Slip Down Chickasha, by Slip Down Lena. Nurse Mate, by Smart Mate, the gelding that Will Arthur, rode to tie Holmes with 218.5 points. Arthur s parents purchased Nurse Mate from Holmes, who raised both horses out of High Brow Nurse, reserve champion of the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity and the Open Super Stakes, and producer of the earners of nearly $300,000. If it s a High Brow Nurse colt, I m always excited to show it, said Holmes. I wish she had more of them. Fourteen-year-old High Brow Nurse, by High Brow Hickory out of Nurse Rey, has carried most of her foals herself. I usually let her carry one baby a year, said Holmes. This (2002) was one of the few years she had two. Halreycious, out of Stylish Play Lena, the earner of more than $265,000, was destined to be an NCHA Open Futurity contender under Holmes longtime trainer Lloyd Cox. But the colt developed colitis at two. He s got to be one of the neatest horses I ve been on, said Holmes, a former NCHA Non-Pro Futurity reserve champion. But he s really only had a year s worth of training because he was sick for a year. At one point, Holmes was told Halreycious would not survive. In addition to veterinarians, Holmes personal physician also treated the colt. But it was four miniature mares who inspired Halreycious to get back on his feet, once the colitis was under control. He lived in my backyard with the miniature mares for almost a year, Holmes explained. He fell in love with them and I think they kept him going. Holmes is offering a buyers choice selection of Double Dove s 2005 yearlings, as well as some broodmares, during the NCHA Summer Spectacular Sales, beginning this Friday through Sunday, July 30.
