DC Technical Report 09/2015 Universities from Germany and the 2015 edition of the Shanghai ranking D. Docampo L. Cram December 15, 2015. Abstract The emergence of international academic rankings is one of the most interesting phenomena in the field of comparative analysis of higher education. Once we have found a way to accurately replicate the results of the ranking, we are in a position to shed light into the performance of whole University systems. This report presents the results of 83 universities from Germany in ARWU 2015. Keywords Academic rankings Shanghai arwu world class universities German universities Germany German Higher Education System 1 Introduction The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) a.k.a the Shanghai Ranking, evaluates the research performance of academic institutions on the basis of numerical measures related to individual outstanding achievements and institutional research throughput. A first hand account of the Shanghai ranking indicators can be found in Liu and Cheng (2005), and is summarized in Docampo (2013). A reliable account of the ranking procedures can be found in Docampo and Cram (2014). For a guided tour into the computation of the ranking scores (2015 edition of ARWU) the reader is referred to Docampo and Cram (2015). This report analyzes the performance of 83 universities from Germany in ARWU 2015 (40 of them are included in ARWU 500). To collect the necessary data for the computation of the ARWU raw scores, we have checked the electronic sources shown in Section 2. Results are present in Section 4. 2 Electronic sources Data were gathered from the following Electronic Sources: ARWU data from http://www.arwu.org Domingo Docampo Universidade de Vigo, Atlantic Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies; Campus Universitario, 36310 Vigo, Spain. Some disambiguation problems with affiliations may still persist, so we warmly invite comments on any apparent errors or uncertainties in the list of institutional name variants that comprise the WOK OG names.arwu does not use FTE figures for Germany, so all universities from this country are treated as if they had the same Full Time Equivalent Staff (890). This obviously benefits large institutions and penalizes small universities in the computation of the PCP indicator. 4 Results We show in this report results corresponding to 83 Higher Education institutions from Germany in the 2015 edition of ARWU. It is worth mentioning that the entrance score in the 500 universities was close to 9.6. We have reproduced the results of the ARWU webpage in the case of the universities ranked below 500. The rest of the scores have been computed using the procedures documented in Docampo and Cram (2015). We have included two universities currently not ranked by ARWU, both located in Berlin. We have split the points accrued in both Alumni and Awd to the University of Berlin equally into the Free University of Berlin and the Humboldt University of Berlin. We have also tried our best to include papers listed as Charite University in the Web of Knowledge. In Table 1 we show the distribution of German universities in ARWU 2007 (at the beginning of the Excellence Initiative) and ARWU 2015. We have included the two Berlin universities in the table. ARWU Tier 2007 2015 1-50 0 1 51-100 5 3 101-150 7 6 150-200 3 5 201-300 8 8 301-400 14 7 401-500 5 11 Table 1: German Universities in ARWU 2007 and ARWU 2015 In this technical report we show the ranking of the universities both within the local Higher Education System (columns 9 and 10 in the tables that follow) and the global ARWU position as well (final column), among 3500 universities worldwide. Table 3 shows the results for universities clasified up to 1000 in ARWU 2015. Table 4 shows the results for the remaining universities.
