Our outlook, which is rooted in the concepts of liberty and responsibility, emphasizes initiative and leadership alongside community service. International students not only benefit from this outlook, they also gain an allencompassing introduction to the State of Israel which includes exploring its roots, enjoying the country s unique scenery and learning of its rich history. TED ARISON (1924-1999) Ted Arison was born and raised in Tel Aviv. He began studying engineering at the American University in Beirut but left to enlist in the Jewish Brigade of the British Army during WWII. Mr. Arison went on to become a lieutenant-colonel in the Israel Defense Forces. Mr. Arison and his family moved to the United States in the early 1950s where he set up the Carnival Cruise Company in Miami, Florida which ultimately became one of the world s preeminent firms in this field. He influenced the cultural life of Miami during the time he spent there by establishing the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, founding the New World Symphony, and purchasing the Miami Heat NBA team. Mr. Arison founded the Arison Foundation in the U.S. and, in 1991, also established a foundation in Israel bearing his name. The Israeli foundation supports and contributes to education, health, research, and art. RAPHAEL RECANATI (1924 1999) Raphael Recanati was a man of vision; more important, he was a person who delighted in putting vision to work. He would have been proud of the Raphael Recanati International School, which is modern Israel in action. Israel, he knew, could no longer be just the manifestation of its ancient promise or revolutionary Zionist prophesies. It must, through competitive achievements, assume a place of leadership in new global markets and find ways to participate as a full partner in the creation of Western culture and international political institutions. Israeli universities, for their part, must help prepare new generations, both in Israel and from abroad, to thrive in this emerging world. The Raphael Recanati International School rejects the convention of seeing Israel as a follower and invites students to come to IDC Herzliya to learn how to become leaders as scientists, as entrepreneurs and as custodians of a uniquely human global environment. This is the world Raphael Recanati understood and helped to invent. The Raphael Recanati International School issues this challenge to students of unusual maturity and ambition: Come and learn the management skills, diplomatic strategies and technologies that define our age. Come immerse yourself in an unforgettable adventure. Come join and enjoy a unique student body. Come and learn to be among the founders of tomorrow s world. Michael Recanati Chairman of the Raphael Recanati International School Oudi Recanati Chairman of the IDC Herzliya Board of Directors 7

ARISON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS DEAN S WELCOME The modern business world constantly presents managers with new challenges that require knowledge of a wide range of topics and an understanding of the international arena. The Arison School of Business strives to prepare executives and future business leaders for these challenges. To this end, we have developed an MBA program that consists of a high academic level and practical learning. The program is innovative, and it is continually updated to reflect new developments in business education and the global arena. It is created and taught by an internationally regarded faculty who has lectured at the world s best universities, such as the Wharton School, University of Michigan, Columbia University, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, NYU, Cornell and others. They bring the best and latest in international education and a strong commitment to quality teaching. Since the initiation of our MBA program in 2001, it has been considered one of the leading academic programs in Israel. The Global MBA Programs are a new addition to our school and offer international students high-level MBA courses and the opportunity to study in Israel. There are two Programs which will be taught in English: Global Management MBA Program (GMBA) and Global Entrepreneurship MBA Program (GEMBA) and the emphasis is on conducting business in the global arena. Studying in a Program with an international student body will give participants a significant advantage in the formation of international connections and in discovering global business opportunities. It will prepare students with the practical tools and theoretical knowledge needed to establish and manage businesses, and to develop and implement business initiatives on an international level. We expect that these Global MBA Programs will be the leading Programs both in IDC Herzliya and in Israel. Prof. Elazar Berkovitch, Dean Arison School of Business Director, MBA Program 13

THE GLOBAL MANAGEMENT MBA PROGRAM (GMBA) Academic Advisor: Prof. Oded Shenkar This distinctive curriculum combines MBA studies with a specialization in Global Management. It includes the classic components of MBA studies with an international orientation and an emphasis on unique content that is relevant to conducting business in the global arena. The Program is designed for executives from Israel and abroad who operate in the international business arena, executives of multinational companies, exporters, importers, entrepreneurs, investment managers, and international real estate entrepreneurs and investors, among others. It was established to provide students with the tools needed to conduct business in the global arena. I come from the world of accounting and economics. Selecting the MBA Program with a major in finance at IDC Herzliya was a smart move for me. This is true even though there are many programs in the market that are designed especially for accountants. The studies at IDC Herzliya were intensive. In addition to the case studies taught at the world s leading business schools, this Program provided me with critical thinking tools and even strengthened my abilities in the area of finance, which is vital for a financial manager. Raed Hag-Yehia, 36, 05 Accountant, Internal Controller, Bank Leumi Throughout the course of studies students will examine the international arena from the perspective of different disciplines relevant to management such as marketing, finance, law and culture. Topics such as: cross cultural management (companies that operate in different countries), international strategic alliances, managing people in global markets and international law will be considered. The faculty consists of the best lecturers from the world s leading business schools. They are involved in the business arenas of various countries and share their experience in the classroom. The Program operates under the academic guidance of Prof. Oded Shenkar, an expert on global management who has extensive experience conducting business in the Chinese arena. Prof. Shenkar has served as a consultant to many multinational companies, governments and international organizations, as well as having been a guest lecturer at many universities in China. A study trip to China is part of the curriculum and includes visiting international companies and meeting executives and businesspeople. 16

The course core faculty and a mentor from the industry, who specializes in an area relevant to the team s business, guide the teams through the process. Each team presents the business it is developing to panels of representatives of venture capital funds, entrepreneurs and businesspeople. The teams also have access to a variety of advisors who work with the Entrepreneurship Center at IDC Herzliya. Students enjoy the opportunity to learn from the experience of successful entrepreneurs and leading businesspeople. Entrepreneurs Tales: A significant part of the Program, this class consists of regular meetings with entrepreneurs, professionals and senior members of the business community to discuss a variety of topics related to entrepreneurship in an informal atmosphere. The union of the many experiences shared by the guest speakers with the students exposes students to many aspects of creating and doing business in a unique way that enriches the students learning experience beyond the traditional course-based studies. The Program is taught in English and is designed for students from Israel and abroad who have demonstrated entrepreneurial, business or leadership skills. IDC Herzliya s Berman-Lippa Family Foundation Debating Club is the largest debating club in Israel and one of the most popular activities at IDC Herzliya. The club has represented IDC Herzliya in competitions in Israel and abroad, winning first prize at the European University Debating Championship in the English as a Second Language category. Another anchor of extracurricular activities is the IDC Entrepreneurship Club, which facilitates the exchange of information and views among students with entrepreneurial interests and ideas, faculty members and successful entrepreneurs. Social responsibility is woven into student life as well. Reflecting IDC Herzliya s philosophy that campuses should be an integral part of their communities, many student activities focus on serving the public. Some extracurricular activities allow students to use their newly acquired knowledge to contribute to the community. For example, business administration students mentor budding entrepreneurs at local middle schools through the Young Entrepreneurs Israel Program. Students can earn academic credit for participating in selected activities. Setting the Agenda Student Union The Student Union is an apolitical organization that strives to enhance student life in Israel and assist both IDC Herzliya students and the community. Representatives from each class are elected to the Student Union. It publishes a student-run magazine, Moed Bet, in English and Hebrew. The magazine serves both as a news organ and a forum for discussion of relevant issues. Useful information on academic and other matters, such as renting an apartment, is available at the Student Union s office. In addition to organizing cultural and social events, such as the annual Student Day festival, the Student Union sponsors peer-based assistance programs to help students cope with academic or economic difficulties and address special needs. The Student Union also encourages students to become involved in the community by sponsoring a variety of volunteer activities, including tutoring Herzliya schoolchildren and holiday visits to the children s wards at hospitals. As part of the IDC Herzliya community, the international students are encouraged to take part in Student Union activities. IDC Herzliya is renowned for establishing the annual forum that has become a cornerstone of public debate in Israel the Herzliya Conference on the Balance of Israel s National Strength and Security. Israel s prime ministers have chosen to use the Herzliya Conference as a platform for delivering the State of the Nation Address and presenting major policy decisions to the public. This year, Israel s President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Binyamin Netanyahu, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, and Ambassador Dan Gillerman were joined by guests from overseas, Ambassador John R. THE CAMPUS: AN ACADEMIC VILLAGE IDC Herzliya s campus is located close to an urban area with one of the highest concentrations of high-tech firms in Israel, yet the campus itself has a pastoral character. The campus is an academic village designed to create a stimulating learning and research environment. It serves some 3,400 students and is designed to ultimately serve as many as 5,500. Visitors find it hard to believe that it was built on the foundations of a dilapidated military training base. The elegant, modern buildings housing the Arison School of Business, the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy and the Marc Rich Library all were awarded the prestigious Zeev and Yacov Rechter Prize in Architecture in 2005. Like the new buildings for the Efi Arazi School of Computer Science and the Sammy Ofer School of Communications, they are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure designed to enhance the learning experience through digital presentations, studio learning and video conferencing. Podiums in lecture halls are equipped with multimedia computer links to the campus network, the internet, cable TV and videoconferencing facilities. A wireless internet network provides internet access from selected spots on campus. Lawns, gardens and flowerbeds connect the lecture halls, library, faculty offices and computer labs to recreational areas, such as student and faculty lounges, the cafeteria and the campus bookstore. Archaeological treasures and works by local and international artists on loan or donated by IDC Herzliya friends adorn the walls of meeting rooms and halls around the campus. Two interesting spots on campus are the sculpture garden and the exhibition on Business and Government in the Land of Israel in Ancient Times. 35
FEELING AT HOME Beyond the Classroom Studying in an academic institution in Israel is a fantastic way for students to become acquainted with contemporary Israel and its priorities and trends, as well as with the long, rich history of the Jewish People. The staff of the Raphael Recanati International School feels a responsibility to take students beyond the boundaries of the IDC Herzliya campus and expose them to all that Israel has to offer, from the Golan Heights in the north to the Red Sea in the south. This is done through a variety of extracurricular activities. They include fieldtrips, seminars and events in uniquely Israeli locations, such as Masada and Jerusalem; hiking trips in the Galilee and the Negev; and becoming better acquainted with Israeli society by volunteering in the Herzliya community. The municipality of Herzliya invites the school s students to the cultural events and performances it organizes free of charge. The school also organizes events on campus, such as a theater club and the Ambassadors Club, which teaches Israel advocacy and diplomacy. In addition, a wide range of social events from barbeques to beach parties to formal receptions bring together international and Israeli students. These activities are intended for undergraduate students but are certainly open to graduate students if their schedules permit. Health Insurance All IDC Herzliya students are required to have comprehensive health insurance coverage throughout their studies. Israeli citizens, including new immigrants, receive health insurance for a low monthly fee in accordance with the country s health insurance legislation. An Israeli health fund provides a special insurance plan for international students at IDC Herzliya. The plan provides comprehensive health coverage and high-level primary and secondary medical care for $500. This includes hospitalization, a 24-hour English-language hotline, house calls and subsidized medication. Students can sign up for health insurance through the Raphael Recanati International School after enrolling at the school by using the form in the school s confirmation booklet or by requesting a health insurance form from the school s office. Visa and Status Assistance Students are responsible for clarifying and establishing their status in Israel and can turn to the Raphael Recanati International School staff for advice and assistance. Before commencing studies, all students must clarify their status and eligibility for a visa or Israeli citizenship with the Israeli embassy or consulate in their county of origin. International students who are children of Israeli parents must settle all matters, such as deferment of military service, with the nearest Israeli embassy or consulate. Contact information for embassies and consulates around the world can be found at: www.rris.iad.ac.il/visas The Ministry of Immigrant Absorption provides advice and assistance to students considering immigrating to Israel. www.moia.gov.il 36 Prices are subject to change due to fluctuations in market prices and currency exchange rates.
