ACCESS THE COURSE Instructors will find a list of their courses under the My Courses module, which is located on the My APS Online tab. (Diagram # 1: Welcome Page) Click on the name of the course that is to be customized. (In this example Gene s Sandbox.) 1
Once in the course, make sure you are in Edit Mode CREATE THE TEST There are at least two different ways to create a test. One is to create a test from within a Course Content Area or click on the Test, Surveys and Pools in the Class Tool in the Control Panel. CREATE TEST IN COURSE CONTENT AREA In this course, we will be creating our Test within the Assignments area in the course content menu. Since the course content area is configurable by the user (you can customize your course s view), you might be seeing a different Course Content Menu than is shown on the right. Click the Assignments button. Click the Evaluate button and then Create Test. 2
You will be presented with a page that allows you to either select a pre-made test or create a new one To create a new test, click [Create]. You will need to provide a name for your test. The description and instructions are optional, but are recommended. Type a name for your test. Type a description of your test. This text can be formatted with the tools shown. The instructions can be typed and formatted the same way. Make sure to click [Submit] to save your test The next screen you see will be Test Canvas, where you can add questions to your test. 3
The Test Canvas screen will show the questions that you have added to this particular test. Each newly added question will appear at the bottom of the list. The order of the questions may be changed by dragging and dropping the question to the desired position. You know when you can drag and drop an item when there is a small up and down arrow icon to the left of it. Click the [OK] button when you are done adding questions. You will be brought back to the Add Test screen. You will want to select the test you just created and click the Submit button. At this point you will be presented with the Test Options screen. 4
Section Test Information Some of the options, such as the Name field and Description field will already have been filled out by you. Think about whether you would like to have this test open in a new window or not. Section Test Availability Test Availability controls who can see your test, and when they can see it. It s possible that certain groups in your course will get one test and other groups another. Of course, you ll want to set the dates it is available as well If the link is unavailable, students will not be able to see the course, but you will. 5
An entry will automatically be added to the Announcements page if you click [Yes] Be aware that if you allow multiple attempts, if the student takes the test, passes, and for whatever reason opens the test again, the status will show that the test is not completed. You can either make the student finish again or clear the last attempt yourself. Checking [Force Completion] will not allow the above issue to happen as the student will not be able to open the test and then walk away, leaving it open. Setting a timer could possibly keep a student from looking answers up on the internet, as they won t have time, but don t depend on it. Students will not be able to take the test before or after the dates you set here. Section Self-assessment Options Grade Center items excluded from summary calculations are also excluded from weighting. Also note that if some weighted items are included in calculations and other weighted items are not, grade weight calculations will be skewed. 6
If this option is checked, the teacher will not be able to see any student grades, view answers, aggregate results, or download result details. To protect student privacy, this choice cannot be reversed later without deleting all attempts. Section 4 Test Feedback Whatever is checked here will be displayed to the student when the student is done with the test. Section 5 Test Presentation Here you can choose to have all the questions on one page, or one question per page. [Prohibit Backtracking] will not allow to students to review her answers after she submits them Randomizing questions is another way to help prevent cheating. If your question pool has 50 questions, but you are only using 10 for this test, then randomly picking questions means that not all students will get the same questions. Section 6 Submit Be sure to click [Submit] to save your test settings. A confirmation message will be displayed indicating that the test has been successfully added. 7
SELECT AN EXISTING TEST Click the [Evaluate] button. The Create Test screen will be displayed. Section Add Test Existing test that have not been deployed yet in any place within the course will be displayed in the Add Test window. Click on the desired exam to select it. Section Submit Click [Submit]. You will see the Test Options screen with sections 1 through 6 (described above). Select the appropriate options and hit the Submit button again. A confirmation message will be displayed indicating that the test has been successfully added. 8
CREATE A TEST THROUGH THE COURSE CONTROL PANEL Access the control panel in your course. Click on the Test, Surveys, and Pools option in the control Menu. This brings up 3 options in the display area - >> Tests, >> Surveys, >> Pools. Click on the >> Tests in the display area. This brings up the screen shown below with an option to Build Test. Once you select the option to Build Test, it takes you through steps displayed above to create a test and its questions. This new test that has will be created will not be deployed though. 9
To deploy this test, go to a course content area where you would like to deploy the test (Content area below). Within this, select the EVALUATE CREATE TEST option. The create test brings up a list of undeployed tests in the course. Select on the test you just created and want to deploy and hit the submit button on the screen below. This will bring up a screen where you can alter the properties for the test. Hit the Submit button when done. This deploys the test in the content area. 10
