PPI Products Limited PPI 1096 LAMINATE TAPE Description: PPI 1096 is a special laminate tape based on a combination of soft, annealed copper foil with polyester (polyethylene terephthalate) film. The copper foil is partially wrapped with the polyester insulation leaving a minimum 1 mm solder gap on one side. This heat class B (up to 130 o C/ 266 o F) laminate tape can be supplied in a multitude of film and copper foil thicknesses and width constructions. This wide range of suitable substrates coupled with PPI s production expertise means that a very wide range of customer tailored laminate tapes can be readily produced with excellent quality. Application: Copper foil/ polyester film laminates have two major application areas: Static shields: Acting as an electromagnetic/ electrostatic shield, the laminate is applied between the primary and secondary winding and also earthed. The shield thus prevents capacitive coupling between the primary and secondary winding. Direct winding: Copper foil laminates are also used as replacements for copper wire in primary and secondary windings. Foil conductors have the advantage of having a greater surface area for a given cross sectional area, when compared to wire conductors. Since most of the current flowing through a conductor is on the surface (i.e. the so called skin effect ) and the limitations of the skin effect are most noticeable as frequencies increase, this has resulted in major use of foil laminate tapes in the production of high frequency transformers. Corona discharge effects It is well known that all organic insulating materials are degraded by corona discharge and both corona threshold voltage and intensity are based almost entirely on insulation thickness, air gap thickness and device construction. While corona does not occur during normal operations of correctly designed electrical equipment, any device may be subjected to occasional over-voltages that produce brief corona discharges and thus result in insulation failure. a) Standard Laminate: width: 7.0 40.0 mm Width Total Width 1

PPI Products Limited Handling Precautions: Due to their metal foil components some of the PPI laminate tapes can be classified as heavy (i.e. greater than 5.0 Kg/ 11 lbs weight per roll). During unpacking and removal of the rolls from their packaging, handling precautions should be taken in compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Metal foils may have sharp edges and protective handware is recommended. Ideally rolls should be handled at all times by their cores. Storage Conditions: Prior to use, PPI 1096 should be stored in its original packaging in a cool dry place and should be protected from direct sunlight. Recommended storage conditions are 23 o C +/- 2 o C, (73 o F +/- 4 o F), relative humidity 50-60%. An unprotected copper surface is prone to oxidation with time and this effect is exaggerated in an aggressive chemical environment, (e.g. vicinity of salt water). Excessive oxidation results in a copper surface that cannot be readily soldered. Stock should always be rotated on a first in, first out basis. Packaging: PPI 1096 is packaged and handled very carefully as illustrated in the following diagram. A series of cardboard inserts are used to stabilise the product within the carton. Care should be taken during transportation and storage of the product. Store the carton in an upright position. The rigid cardboard stabilising core is used to prevent shifting of the rolls during transportation. The cardboard stabilisers at the top and bottom of each box should also provide extra protection during transportation.
