Geotechnical, Environmental and Materials Consultants AGNOLI, BARBER & BRUNDAGE, INC. 7400 Tamiami Trail North, Suite 200 Naples, FL 34019 12-JUN-2014 Ardaman File No. 14-33-4528 Attention: SUBJECT: Mr. Dan Brundage, P.E. Subsurface Soil Exploration Analysis and Recommendations Proposed Mast Arms Intersection of County Barn Road and Davis Boulevard Naples, Collier County, Florida Gentlemen: As requested and authorized by Agnoli, Barber & Brundage, Inc., Ardaman & Associates, Inc. (Ardaman) has completed the subsurface soil exploration program for the subject project. The purpose of this program was to evaluate the general subsurface conditions for mast arms proposed at the intersection of County Barn Road and Davis Boulevard, Collier County, Florida. This report documents our findings and conclusions. It has been prepared for the exclusive use of Agnoli, Barber & Brundage, Inc. and their consultants for specific application to the subject project in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made. SCOPE The scope of our services was limited to the following items: 1. Reviewing three Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings performed by Ardaman for the County Barn Road widening project back in 2005. 2. Analyzing the soil conditions with respect to the proposed construction as it relates to foundation design. 3. Preparing this report to document the review of our field exploration and laboratory testing programs, our engineering analysis and our recommended soil parameters for foundation design. 9970 Bavaria Road, Fort Myers, Florida 33913 Phone (239) 768-6600 FAX (239) 768-0409 Florida: Bartow, Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, Port St. Lucie, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Tampa, West Palm Beach Louisiana: Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Monroe, New Orleans, Shreveport
Subsurface Soil Exploration Analysis and Recommendations 12-JUN-2014 Proposed Mast Arms Ardaman Project No. 14-33-4528 Intersection of County Barn Rd. and Davis Boulevard. Page No. 2 Naples, Collier County, Florida SITE LOCATION New mast arms are proposed at the intersection of County Barn Road and Davis Boulevard in Naples, Collier County, Florida to replace the existing signalization. County Barn Road exists as a two-lane road. Davis Boulevard exists as a four-lane divided roadway. Test borings were located at each corner of the intersection except the northwest corner where conflicts with above ground and underground utilities precluded drill rig access. FIELD EXPLORATION PROGRAM Ardaman performed Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings for proposed signal poles associated with the County Barn Road widening project back in 2005. The SPT borings were drilled to a maximum depth of 20 feet below the existing ground surface. The SPT borings were conducted using methods consistent with ASTM D- 1586. The equipment and procedures used in the SPT borings are described in detail in the Appendix. The locations of the borings are shown on the attached Figure 1 Boring Location Plan. GENERAL SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The general subsurface conditions encountered during the field exploration are shown on the attached soil boring logs. Soil stratification is based on examination of recovered soil samples and interpretation of the field boring logs. The stratification lines represent the approximate boundaries between the soil types; the actual transitions may be gradual. In general, the test borings encountered loose to medium dense fine sands (SP) from the ground surface to an average depth of 6 feet followed by hard limestone rock to a depth of about 17 feet. Underlying this rock stratum the borings encountered loose calcareous silty sands (SM) with gravel to the terminal depth of the exploration, or about 20 feet. Groundwater was encountered in the boreholes at depths ranging from 3 to 4 feet below the existing ground surface at the time of our field exploration (19-AUG-2005). The groundwater depths shown on the boring logs represent the groundwater surface encountered on the dates shown. Fluctuations in groundwater level should be anticipated throughout the year due to seasonal variations in rainfall, and other factors. Ardaman & Associates, Inc.
Subsurface Soil Exploration Analysis and Recommendations 12-JUN-2014 Proposed Mast Arms Ardaman Project No. 14-33-4528 Intersection of County Barn Rd. and Davis Boulevard. Page No. 3 Naples, Collier County, Florida LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM Representative soil samples obtained during our field sampling operation were packaged and transferred to our office and, thereafter, examined by a geotechnical engineer to obtain more accurate descriptions of the existing soil strata. The soil descriptions shown on the logs are based upon visual-manual procedures in accordance with local practice. Soil classification is in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D- 2487) and is also based on visual-manual procedures. Soil samples from the SPT borings were selected for environmental corrosion tests consisting of soil ph, (FM 5-550), resistivity (FM5-551), chlorides (FM5-552) and sulfates (FM5-553). The near surface recovered samples from borings SPT-1 and 2 were combined to give sufficient sample size for testing. The results are summarized below. Boring No. Depth (ft.) Ph Resistivity (ohm-cm) Chlorides (ppm) Sulfates (ppm) SPT-1 & 2 1 4 8.6 14,000 30 25 Substructure Environmental Classification Steel Concrete Slightly Slightly Aggressive Aggressive ENGINEERING PROPERTIES The soil properties, based on the samples obtained and the recorded N-values, were averaged and are presented on the borings logs corresponding to the soil and rock types encountered. The soil properties presented include: cohesive strength, c, in pounds per square foot (psf); the angle of internal friction, ø, in degrees; the total unit weight, γt, in pounds per cubic foot (pcf) and the soil buoyant unit weight, γb, in pounds per cubic foot (pcf). The following table presents generalized conditions for each boring. SOIL DESIGN PARAMETERS SOIL BORING SPT-1 (NE CORNER) Approx. Soil Angle of SPT Soil Type Unit WT. When the final design and specifications are completed, we would like the opportunity to review them in order to determine whether changes in the original concept may have affected the validity of our recommendations and whether these recommendations have been implemented in the design and specifications.
