How does IUFRO work? IUFRO s Strategy and Themes Participating in IUFRO IUFRO World Congress 2014 Participating in the World Congress 1

WHAT IS IUFRO? IUFRO is the WORLD S NETWORK FOR FOREST SCIENCE; IUFRO unites more than 15,000 SCIENTISTS in about 650 Member Organizations in 120 countries; IUFRO is NON-PROFIT and non-governmental, VOLUNTARY and non-discriminatory; Founded in 1892, IUFRO has a long history of INTERNATIONAL FOREST SCIENCE COOPERATION. IUFRO s VISION As the global network for forestrelated research to serve the needs of all forest researchers and decision-makers 2

MISSION To promote global cooperation in forest-related research and enhance the understanding of the ecological, economic and social aspects of forests and trees, including wood and non-wood products, goods and services. To disseminate scientific knowledge to stakeholders and decision-makers and contribute to forest policy and on-the-ground forest management. HOW DOES IUFRO WORK? IUFRO provides a GLOBAL STRUCTURE for science cooperation related to forest and trees; Within this structure, member scientists from all around the world COLLABORATE on a VOLUNTARY BASIS; The structure allows IUFRO to ADDRESS RESEARCH NEEDS AND PRIORITIES of its members, policy-makers, practitioners and stakeholders; 3

IUFRO STRUCTURE 9 permanent DIVISIONS covering key forest research fields, subdivided into 260 RESEARCH GROUPS and WORKING PARTIES; TASK FORCES for INTER-DISCIPLINARY cooperation in inter-divisional forest research fields SPECIAL PROGRAMMES, PROJECTS and INITIATIVES to support science collaboration in IUFRO. NETWORKING ACTIVITIES OF IUFRO IUFRO WORLD CONGRESSES every five years with more than 2000 participants; About 70 IUFRO CONFERENCES and WORKSHOPS per year; joint publications; Joint ACTIVITIES and PARTNERSHIP agreements with national governments, as well as regional and global organizations and NGOs. 4
