NOTES for Unit 9 Exploration and the Americas.notebook March 17, 2016 After Exploring, Europeans settled in the Americas. They set up colonies to make money or wealth by trading. This led to an exchange of goods called the Columbian Exchange. (named after Christopher Columbus). The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of European and American items with one another. We have the foods, etc. that we have today because of the Columbian Exchange. BRAINPOP The Columbian Exchange https://www.brainpop.com/ socialstudies/worldhistory/ columbianexchange/ preview.weml 7 What was the Columbian Exchange? A Christopher Columbus exchanging goods and items with Native Americans. B The exchange of people, technology, ideas, and diseases between Europe and the Americas. C Entrepreneurs exchanging goods and items in their home town. D The exchange of people, technology, ideas, and diseases between Africa and Asia.

Each European country settled the America's differently. Portugal Spain France England The Portuguese focused mostly on trade and built settlements along the coast of Africa and South America (Brazil). They were the first to start the African Slave Trade and had many plantation colonies. The Portuguese were big on spreading Christianity to the Native Americans. The Spanish were called Conquistadors because they conquered the natives, killed them, took their gold, and forced them to convert to Christianity. They had the LARGEST EMPIRE in the Americas, with colonies in central and South America. They had many plantations where they grew cash crops for money. The Spanish took lots of GOLD from the natives they conquered. The French settled in North America in the regions known today as the United States and Canada. Many territories in these areas have French names, such as Quebec in Canada and Louisiana in the US, named after the French king, King Louis. The French developed a successful fur trade and had many trading post colonies along the coast. Unlike the Spanish, the French were nice to the natives. They lived among them and learned from them. The English had a variety of colonies and permanently settled in present day United States. They established 13 colonies that created a source of wealth for Britain. In these colonies, they produced cash crops and other resources that were sent back to England to sell for money. England also charged heavy taxes on their colonies, which also created wealth for them. Europeans first enslaved Native Americans, but the natives quickly died off from European diseases, overwork, and starvation. Native Americans were not immune to the European diseases such as smallpox and measles, and so they became infected and died off quickly. When this failed, they started to get slaves from Africa (particularly West Africa) and bring them to the Americas to work the plantations. The African Slave Trade is the largest forced migration of people in history. This created a new trade called the Triangle Trade, in which items were taken from Europe and exchanged for slaves in Africa. Then slaves were taken to the Americas in exchange for goods. These goods were then taken back to Europe to sell. Many merchants became wealthy from this trade. There are positive and negative effects of this new global trade. What are some?
