1 DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Add new courses: HIST 299 Thinking Historically Fundamentals of the historian s craft. Variable content. Required for all majors except history honors students. Examines the origins of education and the rise of public schools as the dominant means of educating children in what is now the United States. The course is organized chronologically, beginning before European colonization and continuing through the present day. Writing-emphasis course. Social and cultural history of moving pictures as technology, art, and business. Highlights the role of film ini shaping twentiethcentury America. Writing emphasis course. American cultural history focusing on the role of popular culture in shaping and reflecting American ideals, and domestic and international influence and power in the 20 th Century. Examines a wide range of media in US and global context. Writing emphasis course. Add new course and request approval for variable title: HIST 432 Topics in Modern European History Selected themes and issues in modern European history, eighteenth century to present. Variable content. Repeatability: May be repeated. Maximum 9 hours. The primary field will be examined by a written exam, which is graded pass/fail. A total of 30 hours of course work is required. At least 6 hours must be completed in each of two MA fields. The primary field is examined by a two-hour written exam followed within one week by a one-hour oral examination. The single grade of pass/fail will be given at the conclusion of the oral examination. No examination is given on the secondary field.
