Kids GLASS FROM FINLAND IN THE BISCHOFBERGER COLLECTION 1..8.015 LE STANZE DEL VETRO Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice www.lestanzedelvetro.it
BRUNO AND CHRISTINA BISCHOFBERGER They are a couple who share a passion for art. They love collecting different kinds of objects: ceramics, fabrics, paintings, old and modern artworks. Today you will have the chance to see some of the most beautiful pieces from their Finnish glass collection! Do you like collecting anything? Do you share your hobbies with your friends? Bruno and Cristina were invited to LE STANZE DEL VETRO to show their passion to everyone, hoping you will like it too! THE FINNISH GLASS IN THE BISCHOFBERGER COLLECTION The vases, glasses, pitchers, plates on display have been made by nine artists, nine very special people... Here are their names: Arttu, Göran, Gunnel, Aino, Alvar, Tapio, Timo, Kaj, Oiva. In the rooms you will find their photographs too! All of them have tried to use glass to design new and beautiful objects that can be used in everyday life. You will see over 00 artworks made in Finland in the past century. Some objects are still being produced today, while others are unique pieces. PRESSED GLASS Many of the displayed objects are made of pressed glass: the master places the bulk of molten glass into a container (mould) that can have different shapes and then presses it with a smaller mould. In order to understand the process better, pour some water in a glass and then put a smaller glass inside the first one. You will see water rise along the side of the glass, just like the molten glass in the master s mould.
LOOK, SEARCH AND... Here is a big rose petal made by young Gunnel. It seems as if the wind has just blown it into the showcase! While Gunnel was drawing this work, a little girl named Birgitta was standing next to her watching. Gunnel dedicated the drawing of a vase with a string of tiny pearls encased in the glass to her. 1The face of a woman with two nice earrings stands out against the surface of this glass bowl. If you turn around, you can see a bowl with a lid on which Arttu has drawn a typical Finnish animal being attacked by a cruel enemy. Aino loved decorating her house and table, that is why she designed so many coloured objects like this blue fruit bowl. Do you think her husband liked it? He is the designer of all the vases behind you! 5Plates, bowls and vases placed one on top of the other could be used as a set of tableware or admired as a unique fragile flower. 8 Tapio closed these big coloured bubbles inside a cylinder: they won t be able to meet, so they will never pop! This is magic!!! Who has this green beak? Its designer drew thousands of versions of this animal, playing with imagination and glass. 9Look at this work...bearded Tapio called it Hole in the ice. Would you name it the same way? He surely was thinking about fishing on a frozen lake! A lot of coloured cups to welcome friends! Kaj loved colours and he enjoyed 10 combining different shapes: his objects are really cheerful!! 11 1 A star is shining among Oiva s works: look at its reflection on the table! What does this vase remind you of? A flower, a mushroom, a leaf? In 19 Tapio called it a decorative mushroom. Would you like to jump into this kayak? In the next room you will find a nice Finnish lake where you can paddle. Be careful not to get wet!!! In this Finnish plate made 1 by Tapio Wirkkala the water from the lagoon 1 is frozen, this is a tribute to Venice and its long history of glass!!! 1 8 1 9 10
