Public Industrial & Home Care FUN Division Corrosion Inhibitors Getting in between surfaces and harsh environments

Importance of Corrosion Inhibition Most of today s cleaners/disinfectants are utilized through a dilution or dispensing system. From Ready to Use trigger sprayers to Aerosol Cans, cleaning solutions are in constant contact with tiny metal parts. Alkaline and acid cleaners are used to clean and disinfect metal surfaces. They are expected not to corrode these sometimes glossy exteriors. Clariant s Inhibitors are the right choice to stop the unwanted effects of corrosion. Slide 2

Mechanism of Corrosion Inhibition As an example, the cost of metal corrosion in the U.S. totals ~$276 billion/year 1 A corrosion inhibitor is a chemical compound that, when added in small concentration, stops or slows down corrosion (rust) of metals and alloys. Mechanisms of corrosion inhibition are formation of a passivation layer (a thin film on the surface of the material that stops access of the corrosive substance to the metal), inhibiting either the oxidation or reduction part of the redox corrosion system, or scavenging the dissolved oxygen. 2e - Fe 2+ H + H + Clariant corrosion inhibitors create a layer on the surface of the metal and slow or stop the oxidation and reduction process. 1 http://www.corrosioncost.com/methods/inhibitors/index.htm Slide 3

Hostacor 2732 Hostacor 2732 is an alkyl amido carboxylic acid used as a corrosion inhibitor for aqueous systems including those with heavy amounts of chlorides. It contains no nitrites and is DEA free. Alkanolamine salts of Hostacor 2732 are excellent, low foaming corrosion inhibitors that are stable in hard water. Solubility: Clear (2.5g TEA, 2.5g product, 95ml water) Hostacor 2732 is not soluble in water until neutralized with an amine or aqueous alkali hydroxides. Hostacor 2732 is suitable for both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals. When formulating fluids for Aluminum, it is important that the ph is adjusted to approximately 8. A higher ph value may cause strong blackening of the surface. ph 8 ph 8.7 ph 9.1 ph 9.4 Slide 6

Hostaphat OPS Octane phosphonic acid and presents corrosion protection when neutralized. Soluble in napthenic mineral oils and in water when neutralized Hostaphat OPS is not stable against hard water and it is recommended to formulate using a complexing or dispersing agent. It is most effective against Alkalinity on Aluminum up to ph 11 with a dosage of 1 to 2%. Hostaphat OPS neutralized with alkanolamine is suitable for protection of Zinc from staining and rust. Slide 8

Afilan AKT Blend of phosphoric acid esters Water soluble Especially effective in alkaline environments on non-ferrous and yellow metals including Aluminum, Copper and Brass. Dodicor 2565 Dodicor 2565 is a very specific acid inhibitor for zinc, but also protects steel against attack by mineral acids. Dodicor 2565 is effective at inhibiting sulphamic, phosphoric, sulfuric, hydrochloric, and organic carboxylic acids. The protection level of Dodicor 2565 on steel surfaces does not completely equal that of other specialized inhibitors, but because of its excellent effect on zinc surfaces and, in contrast to other inhibitors, its good solubility and low foam characteristics, it is in many cases preferable to them.
