1. Overview The Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 provides configuration for default ARP aging, enabling of Proxy ARP, and static ARP entries. To configure the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 to communicate with devices that do not respond to ARP requests, a static ARP entry can be configured. Or if you do not wish to age out an ARP entry, a static ARP entry can also be used in this case. A static ARP entry maps the devices IP address to its MAC address. When configuring a static ARP entry on the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600, you assign the IP address and MAC to the physical port and VLAN number if the physical port belongs to a VLAN. 2. ARP Timers & Clearing ARP Entries The ARP table can be viewed by using the following command: ERS8600:5# show ip arp info When viewing the ARP table, the ARP age time is displayed in 10 s of second. Since the default ARP timeout is 360 minutes, the timeout will be displayed as 2160, which actually is 21600 (360 x 60 / 10). An IP ARP entry or entries can be cleared at a VLAN or port level by using the following commands: ERS8600:5# clear ip arp vlan <vlan number> ERS8600:5# clear ip arp port <slot/port> 8

3. Configuration Examples 3.1 Static ARP Entry to Brouter Port To add a static ARP entry to a brouter port, the following command is used: ERS8600:5:6# config ip arp add ports <value> ip <value> mac <value> Example: ERS8600:5:6# config ip arp add ports 1/46 ip 172.2.2.13 mac 00:00:98:22:33:44 3.2 Static ARP Entry to VLAN To add a static ARP entry to a VLAN, the following command is used: Example: ERS8600:6# config ip arp add ports <value> ip <value> mac <value> [vlan <value>] ERS8600:6# config ip arp add ports 1/48 ip 10.1.1.23 mac 00:00:11:43:54:23 vlan 10 3.3 Deleting an ARP Entry To delete a static entry, use the following command: ERS8600:5:6# config ip arp delete <ip address> Example: ERS8600:5:6# config ip arp delete 172.2.2.13 3.4 Setting ARP Aging Time The default ARP aging time is set for 360 minutes. To change this setting, use the following command: ERS8600:5:6# config ip arp aging <1 to 32767 minutes> 9
