RENEWABLE ENERGIES IN RO DESALINATION: CASE STUDIES Marie Ange DEBON Suez Environnement Deputy CEO in charge of International Activities. 4 June 2014 SIWW 2014, Singapore DESALINATION USING RENEWABLE ENERGY Geothermal Solar Wind Tides/Waves Heat Heat Radiation-PV Mechanical- Turb Mechanical- Turb Power Plant Steam Electricity MED RO WATER ELECTRICITY 1
DESALINATION USING RENEWABLE ENERGY SOME REMARKS ON DESALINATION AND RENEWABLE ENERGY: No large Desalination Plants directly driven by Renewable Energy Only small RO plants directly driven by PV panels or wind generators in remote areas or demonstration plants MED linked to renewable energy only references at experimental scale Using Renewable Energy we improve the Sustainability Ratio in Desalination Actually there s many projects in R&D and demonstration on going. But only few references worldwide linking Desalination and Renewable Energies in large scale RO EXPERIENCE: SUSTAINABILITY SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT trough its subsidiary DEGRÉMONT have over 40 years experience in Membrane Desalination by Reverse Osmosis. 270 references support it and these plants produce more than 3,000,000 m3/day of desalted water Pioneers in desalination and also coupling the Renewable Energies in this field. Always looking for the best sustainability balance: social demand, environment and economy. We have the more reliable references, but we need to apply reliable and the most proven technologies for large scale plants: Solar and Wind. 3 CASES TO ILLUSTRATE THIS EXPERIENCE 2
PERTH, AUSTRALIA A FIRST IN DESALINATION AND RENEWABLE ENERGY THE FIRST LARGE RO SEAWATER DESALINATION PLANT IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. AND THE FIRST TO BE FED BY RENEWABLE ENERGIES DBO project developed by Western Australian Water Corporation in Alliance with SE-Degrémont & Multiplex JV 143,700 m 3 /day of Drinking Water from seawater. Supply began in November 2006 + 25 years O&M PERTH, AUSTRALIA A SUSTAINABLE PLANT ENVIRONMENT AND CARBON FOOTPRINT UNDER CONTROL: Brine discharge well designed and monitored Sludge treatment Designed to Minimize the Energy Consumption 2.22 kw.h/m 3 in the first RO pass, the Lowest Energy Consumption reported (2007) 3.2-3.5 kw.h/m 3 for overall plant) Energy produced by Wind Farm ERI PX Pressure Exchangers 3
PERTH, AUSTRALIA WIND ENERGY TO NEUTRALIZE CARBON FOOTPRINT FIRST LARGE FACILITY IN THE WORLD TO BE POWERED BY RENEWABLE ENERGY Plant connected to the general Power Grid Wind Farm constructed by the WA WaterCorp Emu Downs Wind Farm 200 km North of Perth 48 turbines (83 MW) 270 GW.h/year to the grid Average consumption of SWRO Plant: 20.5 MW 150% of Desalination Plant Energy Consumption Energy produced by Wind Farm to compensate & produce the energy demanded by SWRO Plant BARCELONA, SPAIN RENEWABLE ENERGIES TO MINIMIZE CONSUMPTION. PHOTOVOLTAIC LARGEST SWRO IN EUROPE DBO project developed by ATLL (Catalan Water Agency) and built byse- Degrémont-Agbar & Dragados JV 200 000 m 3 /day of Drinking Water from seawater(15-20% demand) In operation from July 2009 4
BARCELONA, SPAIN RENEWABLE ENERGIES TO MINIMIZE CONSUMPTION. PHOTOVOLTAIC THE ROLE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY Photovoltaic panels 1,3 MW, 20.372 m2 of surface Saving 850 CO2 Tm/year Wind generator for test, 50 kw 2 3% of the energy of desalination plant WEX 2013 Desalination & Renewables MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA A MAJOR SUSTAINABLE DESALINATION PLANT GREAT FIGURES A 30-year BOT contract signed with Victoria state by Aquasure (Suez Environnement- Degrémont - Thiess JV) 450,000 m3/d of Drinking Water to supply Melbourne area (able to be extended to 600,000 m3/d) 38 hectares with 29 buildings, 3 streams, 51 RO racks, 55000 RO membranes, 72 Dual Media Filters, 2 tunnels, 85km water transfer pipeline An ecological space with zero nuisance : 225 hectares coastal park with more than 40 000 plants on the green roof In operation from November 2012 + 27 years 5
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA A HUGE GREEN RO PLANT FED BY GREEN ENERGY 0 CARBON FOOTPRINT: A plant with all equipments designed to optimize its energy consumption and minimize its peak consumption Connected to the Power Grid Plant guaranteed Energy Consumption: 90 MW Macarthur Wind farm Renewable energy resources supplied from AGL by Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) Energy provided by 2 Wind Farms of AGL power company : Oaklands Hill Wind farm Oaklands Hill Wind Farm: 63MW from 32 Turbines Macarthur Wind Farm: 420MW from 140 Turbines CONCLUSIONS Perth, Melbourne and Barcelona Desalination Plants are practical cases adapting the Renewable Energies to feed SW Desalination Plants Renewable Energies allow to have a Zero Carbon Footprint in SW Desalination These practical cases show that the best way is to dissociate both: Producing Green Energy to the grid and taking the necessary amount of Energy from the grid to Produce Desalted Water. RE in small scale could integrate the produced energy in the internal grid. This kind of projects can be developed by different ways Perth is a DBO in Alliance Melbourne is a BOT Barcelona is DBO in Turn Key 6
GLOBAL WATER AWARDS: PERTH 2007, BARCELONA 2010, MELBOURNE 2010 & 2013 These 3 challenging projects have proved their Reliability and Efficiency: they got the World Water Industry Recognition Perth Desalination Plant of the Year 2007 Desalination Plant of the Year Winner: Victorian Desalination Plant, Australia Distinction: Adelaide Desalination Plant, Australia Desalination Company of the Year Winner: Abengoa Distinction: Degrémont 7
