Q: What is mold? A: Molds are simple microscopic organisms whose purpose In the ecosytem is to break down dead materials. Molds can be found on plants, dry leaves and on almost every organic material. Some molds are useful, such as those used for anti-biotics and cheese. Others are known to be highly toxic when ingested or inhaled. Q: Do I have mold and why? A: To the naked eye, mold growth appears as a discolored surface, it can be any color but the most prominent colors are blue, black and green. Molds reproduce using spores, which are like lightweight particles that are released and float on air currents until the find a suitable place to grow. Mold is likely to grow where there is water or dampness such as in bathrooms and basements. Q: Are there health risks involved with mold? A: When moldy material becomes damaged or disturbed, spores can be released into the air. Exposure can occur if people inhale the spores, directly handle moldy materials or accidentally ingest it. Most types of mold are not hazardous to healthy individuals. However, too much exposure to mold may cause or worsen conditions such as asthma, hay fever or other allergies. The most common symptoms of overexposure are dizziness, cough, congestion, runny nose, eye irritation and aggravation of asthma. Illness, memory loss and death; all of these health risks are being linked to exposure to toxic mold. Men, women, children and infants can all be susceptible to this fungal danger. Studies for links to short and long term memory loss are currently being studied. The health cost both personally and financially from mold exposure can be extremely high. Q: Can mold harm my home? A: Mold will cause damage to the structure if left untreated because it will continue to grow and spread, eating building materials like wood and drywall. The presence of mold during a home inspection can cause your property value to lower or the sale to even stop with offers being withdrawn until remediation has been completed. Q: How do I get rid of mold? A: Mold remediation begins with a Certified Environmentalist coming in and testing the suspected mold and it s origins. The Environmentalist will then write out a protocol (project plan of action) for Duraclean to follow. We will begin by sealing off the area (called a containment) where we will be removing the mold. This will prevent any cross contamination through out the area. Next we will hepa-vacuum to remove the mold spores. We then us a microbial agent (bio-wash) to kill any spores left behind and for pre-cautionary measures we hepa vacuum again. There will be special machines called air scrubbers there that will filter the air as we remove the mold. The Environmentalist will be come back and re-test to make sure all signs of mold are gone.

Q: Is remediation necessary? A: Remediation is only necessary when there is evidence of 10 SF or more of visible mold growth, or when deemed necessary by a Certified Indoor Air Quality Specialist. Q: How long does remediation take? A: Every situation is different, but a typical remediation will take 3-7 days. Q: What is a hepa vacuum? A: A hepa vacuum is a special vacuum with filters. It is used to remove Fungal spores so they are not floating in the air during remediation. Q: What is a bio-wash? A: Bio-wash is a special antimicrobial which is designed to inhibit, destroy or prevent the development of mold spores. Q: What s the difference between you and a contractor? A: We have spent thousand of dollars on specialized training and equipment to deal specifically with mold damage. Duraclean technicians are familiar with EPA guidelines regarding mold and its removal. Our technicians attend continuing education classes to keep up with the latest in products and procedures. We strive to minimize the impact on your day to day living, and quite often a general contractor does not understand the concept of saving verses replacing. Q: Do I need to turn off the equipment at night? A:The equipment is capable of running for months without being shut off. They will not overheat and should be fine. If you hear or smell anything which seems to not be normal, please unplug the equipment in question and CALL US IMMEDIATELY @ (301) 259-2026. 2026. Our technicians will be checking all equipment on a regular basis. Q: Should I make arrangements for Duraclean to get into my house? A: Yes, it is very important that we have access to monitor the job and finish in a timely manner. If you are not going to be available, then we need to work out a plan to gain access. Q: Do I need to relocate during the remediation? A: Generally, no you will not. We will have the affected areas sealed off to avoid cross contamination. We will hang Secure Area signs in areas that should be considered off limits during remediation, and you will need to leave the premises for approximately 1-2 hours when we spray a microbial agent into the Duct system. Q: Will my insurance company pay for this? A: Each insurance company is different and it may depend on the cause of the mold. If your mold is a result of a prior water damage claim then it may be covered. Contact your insurance agent to find out if your claim will be covered and if so how much they are willing to pay. If not, Duraclean s standard policy is to collect ½ of the fees up front, 25% when we finish and the remaining 25% when we pass the final clearance test.
