Europe s greenest data center
datadock represents the perfect cooperation of humans, machines and nature. In more than three years of planning and construction and with a total budget of over 17 million euros, my team and I have reached our goal of creating an especially eco-friendly and at the same time ultra-modern data center. In addition to a strong focus on efficiency and environmental protection the security and availability of our customer s infrastructure is also crucial. Therefore, we made every effort to realize a comprehensive security and redundancy concept, which ensures the highest possible availability of your data. My team and I are not satisfied unless your infrastructure is available at all time with high performance and without failures. Thomas Strohe CEO
01 HISTORY From warehouse to ultra-modern data center Where tobacco was stored in years gone by, thousands of terabytes of data are stored and made available quickly and securely today. The building, which now accommodates Europe s greenest data center was built in 1880 as a warehouse. The idea to establish a data center there 130 years later, however, was obvious for several reasons. Moreover, the building is situated in one of the groundwater-richest areas in Europe, which opens up the possibility to the operating company PlusServer AG of realizing an innovative, eco-friendly and unique well cooling. First of all the excellent connections all important French IT and Telco routes run through Strasbourg and the central European location are major advantages of this site. The data center is perfectly situated to guarantee the fastest connections to all European regions so that all customers can profit from the best quality.
02 ENVIRONMENT More energy efficiency with groundwater and cold aisles With an outstanding PUE value (Power Usage Efficiency) of 1.18, datadock is one of the most power-saving and eco-friendly data centers in Europe. This brilliant value is achieved, among other things, by using geothermics for cooling. Normally, the production of coldness is one of the largest energy factors in a data center. But since the groundwater supply of the area (one of the most resourceful in Europe) provide the necessary cooling, energy consumption is reduced. In the server rooms the flow of the cold air by means of perforated floor panels and an innovative cold aisle concept ensure that the cold air is fed directly to the servers without loss. Because of this targeted supply, total energy consumption is reduced, further improving energy efficiency. In addition, only the latest eco-friendly components are used at datadock, for example highly efficient UPS devices, climate systems and generators. The latter are class leaders with regard to emissions. The most important facts at a glance: 66 % less energy consumption for data center infrastructure than the average data center 25 % less total energy consumption far more than 25 million kwh annual energy savings at full load this equates to almost 24 million kg less CO ² emission with an average CO ² absorption of 200 kg per tree and year, this equals a forest of more than 119,000 trees
03 TECHNOLOGY Powerful, failsafe and eco-friendly Only the latest energy-saving components are used at datadock. The precision climate system, for instance, cools large rooms with up to 60 % less power consumption than conventional compressor cooling systems and the implemented UPS system (uninterruptible power supply) gives the highest efficiency performance on the market of up to 96 %. The emergency power diesel generators are driven by the latest engines manufactured by MTU, which are class leaders for emissions. They have the lowest emission values according to TA-Luft 1/2 (guidelines for reducing air pollution by the German Federal Ministry of Environment). Of course, together with diligent planning and consideration, we have accommodated the highest level of network accessibility to all main systems. To forward this concept, we have ensured that all technical aspects have remained redundant: Power supply (transformers, low voltage main distribution, UPS components and generators): n+1 or 2n+1 redundancies Cooling: wells, pumps and cooling cycles are laid out with redundancies COLD AISLE CONCEPT Two server rack fronts face each other and form an isolated cold aisle. In every cold aisle, cooled air is led directly to the servers through the raised floor. The rear of the racks build respective hot aisles.
TOWER SERVERS The brand Server4You uses tower cases as server hardware. They are stored on special steel shelves. RACK SERVERS The server hardware of the brands PlusServer, serverloft and Unmetered.com is stored in server racks. Each of these racks holds up to 45 servers. CONTROL CENTER The network and also all rooms, facilities, devices and environmental values are monitored from here. COOLING DEVICES The cold air that is produced in the climate devices is led into the raised floor and directly to the servers through perforated floor panels. TRANSFORMERS The transformers change the voltage from 20,000 V to 400 V. They are laid out redundantly and separated in terms of fire protection. LOW-VOLTAGE MAIN DISTRIBUTION The distribution center of the data center s whole power circuit. For example, it is detected here if the external supply is still secured or if emergency power is needed. UPS The uninterruptible power supply evens voltage fluctuations and takes over the data center s power supply until the diesel generators are ready.
MEDIUM VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR The medium voltage switchgear distributes the incoming power to the available transformers. It is located explosion-safe in a room with 120 min fire protection. HEAT EXCHANGERS At the heat exchangers, the waste heat of the inner cooling cycle is given to the outer groundwater cycle. GENERATOR MAIN DISTRIBUTION In the switch boards of the generator main distribution, the single generators are combined to blocks of four. DIESEL GENERATORS If the external power supply fails, diesel generators will take over. A total of more than 13,000 kva of emergency power can be created. DIESEL TANKS Altogether, 52,000 liter diesel are in stock for feeding the generators, and the tanks can be refilled during operation. WELLS Two 80 meters deep wells were built for pumping groundwater out of the earth. This groundwater is an important element of the cooling concept.
04 SECURITY Your data is in safe hands at datadock datadock s comprehensive security concept ensures that all data is protected from theft or environmental damage. The data center is guarded 24/7 by security personnel. Moreover, all sensitive areas are monitored by cameras, and a modern access control system allows only authorized persons to enter the building, so that no strangers get near your servers. All critical values in the server rooms are permanently monitored by the central building control systems. In addition, an aspirating smoke detector is installed that detects even the tiniest smoke particles in the ambient air. For constant power supply there are UPS devices and voltage regulators as well as redundant diesel generators with 2 x 26,000 liter diesel tanks available. That way, not only is hardware damage due to power fluctuations avoided, but also persistent data availability assured. CONTROL CENTER In the control center, the personnel observe the video surveillance and control who enters or leaves the building. FINGERPRINT SCANNERS All main entries and locks inside of datadock are secured by fingerprint scanners. That way only authorized persons can enter. VESDA The aspirating smoke detector permanently takes samples from the ambient air of all areas and analyzes them for smoke particles.
05 LOCATION In the middle of Europe s economic center The Strasbourg port area was chosen for datadock as, for several reasons, it constitutes the perfect site for a state of the art data center. The site s first advantage is Strasbourg s central position in the midst of the largest European economic region. This location ensures access to the area s outstanding infrastructure and short supply channels in all directions. Furthermore, datadock is situated on the main route for European glass fiber pipelines. For that reason a perfect connection to Germany, France, all of Europe and also the rest of the world is ensured. consumption so low that is has such outstanding power efficiency. Our connections in detail: Core-Backbone Frankfurt-Strasbourg: 100 GBit Deutsche Telekom: 10x 10 GBit Level(3): 10x 10 GBit Global Crossing: 8x 10 GBit cogent: 5x 10 GBit und 3x 10 GBit interoute: 7x 10 GBit DE-CIX: 6x 10 GBit ECIX: 6x 10 GBit Last but not least the excellent soil conditions and inexhaustible groundwater supplies in the area were crucial factors in the decision. It would not have been possible at another location to realize such an eco-friendly and innovative well cooling system with specially built 80 m deep wells. And only with this cooling concept can datadock keep its power
