NEW MEXICO BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INSTITUTE AT LAS VEGAS DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY JOB TITLE: Pharmacy Technician DEPARTMENT: Pharmacy Department TOOL NUMBER: 13010 SHIFT: 8-5 PM or 7:30-4:30 PM. with occasional adjustments as needed DEFINITION AND JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the PHARMACY TECHNICIAN may perform various technical activities associated with the preparation and distribution of medications, not requiring the professional judgment of a pharmacist. REPORTS TO PHARMACY DIRECTOR: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. DISTRIBUTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES Reviews written prescription orders to determine ingredients and to assure that established procedures have been followed. Prepares, mixes, assembles, packages and labels medications; assures recording of all pre-packaging performed. Fills medication orders, carts, cassettes and carriers as assigned. Processes prescription or medication orders including counting, pouring, labeling or reconstituting medications. Performs basic pharmaceutical calculations necessary for the preparation, labeling and dispensing of medications. Transcribes and/or processes billing information, controlled substance records and patient profile information as required. Processes routine orders of stock supplies. Organizes, inventories, restocks and maintain cleanliness and neatness in assigned work areas. Inspects drug storage areas as assigned. Places medication names on order book as they become low. Provides drug order pick-up and/or delivery as needed. Operates micro-computer (e.g. for labeling of bulk preparations, discharge and pass orders and maintenance of medication profiles and order entry, etc). Enters information into the patient medication profile correctly reflecting the source document in terms of patient allergies, drug strength, route and dosing regimen as applicable.

DISTRIBUTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES (continued) Operates and maintains pre-packing machine for tablets and capsules. Obtains a documented final check on all aspects of preparation and distribution of medications. May perform other duties and activities commensurate with training and within the pharmacy regulations. Prepares sterile products including but not limited to irrigations and intravenous admixtures, not to include total parenteral nutrition solutions or chemotherapy solutions, as necessary; (Currently no PARENTERAL solutions are prepared at LVMC). 2. ATTENDS AND ACTIVELY PARTICIPATES INTERDEPARTMENTAL PLANNING AND MEETINGS Demonstrate a willingness to contribute new ideas to the department and improve existing systems through the strategic planning process. Participates in problem solving with peers and supervisor. Helps to maintain a positive productive work environment. 3. ORGANIZATIONAL AND TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS Demonstrates capacity to effectively plan, organize, and execute assigned responsibilities. Exhibits productivity and efficiency through proper time management. Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources, yet not jeopardizing quality care and service. Reports to work and leaves ON TIME for assigned shift or requests approval from supervisor for schedule adjustments. Assures the use of unplanned sick leave does not exceed the department average. 4. INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS Demonstrates satisfactory working relationship with: Director of Pharmacy Co-workers Students Technicians Pharmacists Volunteer Staff Exercises professional judgment in time management, execution of responsibilities, meeting deadlines, providing suggestions and keeping supervisors informed. Exercises patience and promotes a congenial atmosphere in day-to-day operations, especially during periods of understaffing, changes in priorities, stressful situations, and/or critical deadlines.

Works with fellow co-workers in a cooperative manner to accomplish tasks. Willingly and actively assists co-workers when workloads become unmanageable or overwhelming. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT Completes monthly inspections in assigned drug storage areas on time, sign the central pharmacy wall chart and give the department secretary the completed inspection by agreed upon deadline. Completes other Performance Improvement activities as assigned by Director of Pharmacy by agreed upon deadline. 6. SPECIAL PROJECTS Effectively completes special projects assigned by the Director of Pharmacy within the agreed upon time frame. Demonstrates capacity to plan, organize, and execute assigned responsibilities as assigned. Is flexible when changes in prior procedures, personnel, assignments, or decisions become necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned JOB REQUIREMENTS Education: High school graduation or GED. Experience: On the job training. Experience using computers. Certificate/License: Registration with New Mexico Board of Pharmacy (Submit copy of license to State Personnel Office). Work Environment: Most work is indoors where temperature variation is minimal. Fluctuations occur primarily when employees enter air-cooled drug storage areas. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions occurs in traveling from one building to another within the hospital campus for meetings, etc. Lighting is good. Moderate noise level. Proper dress attire consistent with health and safety regulations is required.
