1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Inmate Healthcare Program Administrator, Nursing Director, and/or RN Clinical Supervisor, this position evaluates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of security. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform all duties associated with the assigned Post Descriptions efficiently and effectively, and without error; renders nursing care and treatments according to Protocol; provides inmate care based upon inmate need/condition. Formulate nursing care plans; conducts health screenings, history and physical assessments; chronic care visits, and sick call assessments; responds to emergencies; refers complex health issues, and anything outside the RN scope of authority to a midor upper-level practitioner. Assist the MD/DO/PA/NP with sick call, minor surgical procedures, scheduling, inmate flow, implementing/taking off orders, completing MARs, etc. Document effectively and efficiently in the electronic or paper health record; utilizes the Master Problem List to document inmate problems; utilizes problem oriented medical record (SOAP format) to document all inmate contacts. Maintain logs, prepares reports, and gathers accurate statistics, as directed. Assume the duties/responsibilities of the supervisor when requested in the absence of the supervisor. Remain available for occasional to moderate overtime Assists with new member orientation and annual training; assist with the reordering and stocking of supplies; attend monthly staff meetings, educational classes, etc. Participate in Sheriff s Office recruitment and community relations activities as directed; provide other services and performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 2 REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Competence in performance of the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care. Ability to work without direct, immediate supervision on complex and confidential tasks; expertise in making assessment/diagnoses and appropriate follow-through care and treatment, good decision making, organizational and time management skills. Ability to follow organizational procedures, policies, practices, rules and regulations governing activities of the administrative functions and their interpretations. EQUIPMENT: The position requires the use of a variety of office and computer equipment and related software. The position uses and operates equipment and instruments utilized in meeting job requirements and operational responsibilities. The position requires the ability to drive a vehicle. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Graduate from an accredited registered nursing program; currently licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Florida. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: One (1) year of experience in a correctional setting or comparable clinical environment such as public health, urgent care, acute care, or long term rehabilitation setting. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: Maintain appropriate, unrestricted credentials according to the licensure, certification, and registration requirements of the jurisdiction. Position requires a valid Florida Nursing License (RN), CPR BLS or ACLS Certification by the American Heart Association; and a valid Florida driver s license. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Problem-Solving Skills Required: Solve a wide range of highly complex, multidisciplinary problems, which must consider long-term, organization-wide planning.
3 Writing Skills Required: Compose major reports, policy or procedure manuals, proposals, and brochures. Speaking/Presentation Skills Required: Answers questions with a brief response or providing standard information to customers/citizens, visitors, callers, supervisors, or other members; interviews or discusses detailed information, frequently involving customer/citizen problems or complaints; delivers informational speeches, reports, and orientation before audiences and groups that include people that are not organization members; delivers presentations regarding potentially controversial issues; negotiates with outsiders in sensitive and complex situations. Job Related Communication: The member has daily contact with members within their department, other agency departments, other organizations, and the public. Planning and Scheduling: A substantial level of planning responsibilities exists, usually affecting numerous members and activities and requiring a significant amount of time. Difficulty of Work: Work consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks, requiring application of numerous laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. Assignment of Work: Supervisor provides general guidance allowing for member planning of procedures and methods to attain objective. Effects of Work Errors: Errors may cause delays in work or losses in expenditures for material and/or equipment or unjustified work time. SUPERVISORY OR MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not supervise other members; however, there is some oversight inherent by the nature of the organizational structure of the healthcare system. Any LPN or CNA would be subordinate to this position. WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical Effort/Risk: Work Position: On an average, the member spends 25% of their time standing, 50% of their time walking and 25% sitting.
