Chapter 2: Presentation of the equipment 2.1 General application The RS-232 Interface Tester enables you to display all kinds of serial RS232 signals at an SUB-D9 interface. The tester is simply connected into the serial connections of devices or machines to test their operating parameters. Its two jumper blocks allow you to switch through various signals individually. Simple direct switching from 1:1 to Modem or Null modem as well as to a loop-back connection is made easy without any additional cables. The seven 2-color LED s show whether a line signal is active or not (high/low, + -). To permit measurements and performance testing at the machine/device interface during runtime (e.g. with multi-function measuring instruments, oscilloscopes, etc.), all socket pins of the RS 232 Interface Tester have been led out 1 to 1 at the input side onto a separate pin row from where they can be easily tapped. To ensure maximum protection we have supplied the RS 232 Interface Tester with suppressor diodes (signals against GND) and a decoupling capacitor (between screen and GND) at the output side, i.e. the Sub D plug (Fig. 2). The suppressor diodes offer overvoltage protection that is activated at signals of 18V or more. All these features have been compactly integrated onto a surface no larger than 4,5 by 9cm. 2.2 Connections The RS 232 Interface Tester has two connections: RS232 SUB D9 socket RS232 SUB D9 plug On the casing lid, you will find the labels with the respective meanings of the LED s and measuring contacts. RS232 SUB D9 socket RS232 SUB D9 plug 2.3 Light emitting diodes (LED s) The LED s indicate the state of the respective signal lines and have the following meanings: All LED s can light up in both red and green. Red signal positive voltage level on signal line green signal negative voltage level on signal line DTS, DSR, TXD, RXD, RTS, CTS, DCD positive or negative voltage level at signal line of the same name Data Respons GmbH RS 232 Interface Tester V1.3 Page 8 of 17
2.4 Jumper and pin rows The RS-232 Interface tester can be configured with two jumper rows and has a diagnostic pin row: Jumper row for setting up null modem. (only with jumpered modem configuration.) Jumper row to switch through, cross, or interrupt signals. Jumper setting as "loop back dummy" for RTS/CTS, RX/TX or DTR/DSR is also possible. Pin row for measuring instruments (e.g. multi-function measuring instruments, oscilloscopes, etc.). Here pins 1 to 9 are tapped 1:1 by the RS232 SUB D9 socket. Chapter 3: Start-up 3.1 Start-up Make sure, that 10 jumpers are included in the scope of supply. Connect the equipment only if all jumpers are attached to their required positions. Do not change the jumper settings during runtime. Keep metallic or conducting objects away from the RS 232 Interface Tester. Short circuits not described in the user guide between different pins of the jumper blocks and the pin row and/or performing jumper allocations during runtime may lead to the damage of the interface to be tested as well as other connected devices. For this, we do not accept any liability. Chapter 4: Configuration 4.1 Jumper settings The following configurations are intended and can be used directly: 1 to 1 connection Modem connection Null modem connection Loop-back device Individual switching of signals (on/off) Data Respons GmbH RS 232 Interface Tester V1.3 Page 10 of 17
