Page 4 - Why are Small Businesses so important? There are: 4.5 million Small Businesses in the UK,...accounting for 99% of British enterprise...and 60% of the UK s Gross Domestic Profit However: 50% of Small Businesses fail in their first year, and... 95% of Small Businesses fail in their first five years......so why do so many Small Businesses fail? There are a number of reasons why so many Small Businesses fail; these can include: a declining market and little demand for the business product or service, poor management, inefficient accounting, lack of a business plan and limited capital. This is not an exhaustive list; the specific reasons why a business fails will of course be unique to the business and its circumstances. To help them succeed, Small Businesses need to have efficient accounting systems that will deal with all elements of financial compliance that affect them, including: VAT Returns, Employer s Return, Payroll, Self Assessment Forms, Company s House Return & Year End Accounting. Many Small Businesses also need financial Management Accounting Reports; these often analyse the following: Actual performance compared with predicted performance. Performance Analysis year-on-year. Cash flow forecasts and how these enhance performance. Financial efficiency on a product/service, departmental or business-wide level. Non-financial information e.g. time analysis, time to market, sales tracking, production line statistics, turnaround times, employee absence levels. Small Businesses often lack the resources to spend on Management Accounting, as it tends to be very expensive; but there is no reason Management Accounting needs to be so costly, if you can learn how to process accounting information properly yourself.
