Preventive Recommendation for All Hostel-Resident Students

About Influenza Viruses Influenza: caused by different types of influenza viruses Channel of infection: by droplets when coughing and sneezing Symptoms may develop 7 days after infection, but viruses start to spread 1 day before symptoms develop

Preventive Recommendations (1) Safety Equipment Hostel committees should enforce the following precautionary measures: At hostel counter: Alcohol hand rubs are readily available at every entry Thermometers can be obtained at front desk Surgical masks supply on request

Preventive Recommendations (2) Hostel Environment Ensure a clean and hygienic hostel environment Regular disinfection of hostel equipment, door knobs and lift buttons Cleaning of floor, doors and windows regularly Proper maintenance of toilet facilities and floor drains Adequate supply of liquid soap, disposable towels/hand-dryers in toilets

Preventive Recommendations (3-1) Personal Precautionary Measures Wash hands frequently with soap and water Cover mouth and noses when coughing and sneezing Maintain good indoor ventilation and keep clean Put on a face mask if having runny nose, cough or sore throat Avoid going to crowded places Do not share towels and personal items Use serving spoons or chopsticks

Preventive Recommendations (3-2) Personal Precautionary Measures If fever of over 38 C and/or with respiratory symptoms develop: Wear a mask and seek medical attention promptly Do not attend classes or participate in mass activities Stay home until recovery

Preventive Recommendations (3-3) Personal Precautionary Measures If the sick student cannot go home: Ask his/her roommate to go home, if possible Ensure good ventilation in room Inform hostel management to run errand, if necessary Offer surgical masks to other residents and hostel staff for protection

Prepare for Serious Response Level College/I-House/Postgraduate Hall Coordinators to call meeting with College representatives to advise on special measures taken Maintenance of hostel environmental hygiene Maintain sufficient stocks of thermometers, surgical masks and disinfectant in hostels Arrange for designated areas in hostels for relevant information dissemination

Prepare for Serious Response Level All visitors need to log in and out at student hostel receptions All visitors staying overnight must fill in a health declaration Complete a Health Declaration by all hostel residents returning from trip outside Hong Kong Temperature screening for mass activities on camps The full version can be viewed at the website of CHPP: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/health_promote_protect/serious. html

Epidemic Outbreak If there is epidemic outbreak in hostel Centre of Health Protection (CHP) will be informed to assess the risk of spreading of disease CHP will make a site visit to the affected hostel to conduct case investigation and assessment: Contact tracing Medical surveillance Chemoprophylaxis Disinfection

Epidemic Outbreak Management of the university hostel should cooperate with DH in case investigation and contact tracing by providing floor plan, resident list, staff list and visitor list arranging venues for interviews with residents / staff complying with CHP s instruction regarding confinement of residents and staff restricting visitors Suspending intake of new residents to the affected floor before thorough disinfection and during on-site confinement period

Epidemic Outbreak assisting medical surveillance of contacts if necessary assisting in monitoring the residents compliance to chemoprophylaxis if necessary disinfecting the hostel with 1:49 diluted household bleach The contacts requires confinement are expected to stay in areas for confinement report symptoms of influenza to designated person / CHP comply with the chemoprphylaxis regimen
