Joy Lane Primary School Welcome to the Key Stage 2 Maths Workshop Mar 3 14:41 The aim: To share with you our current calculation policy. To demonstrate how we teach maths at Joy Lane Primary School in KS2. To share with you the changes to the National Curriculum in September 2014. To offer ways in which you can support your child at home with a consistent approach between home and school Mar 3 14:41 1

Where can you find our current calculation policy www.joylane.kent.sch.uk Policies Calculation Policy http://www.joylane.kent.sch.uk/downloads/policies/calculation_policy.pdf Mar 3 14:41 Changes to the National Curriculum? The new national curriculum brings with it changes from the very beginning in Year 1. Overall the Curriculum has become more challenging across all year groups. However, importantly the new curriculum states that children should be secure in their understanding before being taught new concepts, it is therefore essential that teachers work with parents to ensure we are working at the same level. Mar 3 14:41 2

National Curriculum Key messages There is greater emphasis on Fluency with understanding Quick accurate recall Precision Problem solving Analysis Use of mathematical vocabulary to communicate, justify or prove Mental expectations are explicit Algebra is explicit in Year 6 Mar 3 14:41 National Curriculum Number Pathway Counting Doing and undoing Number system and place value Securing and deepening addition and subtraction Repertoire of known facts Developing understanding of multiplication and division Mar 3 14:41 3

We want children to ask themselves: Can I do this in my head? Can I do this in my head using drawings or jottings? Do I need to use an expanded/compact written method? Mar 3 14:41 Mental maths: Place value 4

Maths: To multiply through partitioning. Steps to success: 3. 4. Add to find the total Key Vocabulary multiply, lots of, times, groups Multiply the unit by the one digit number 2. Multiply the tens by the one digit number 1. parition the 2 digit number Top tip: Do not add original numbers as well 13 x 5 = (10 x 5) + (3 x 5) Mar 10 13:48 8

Maths: To multiply using the grid method. Steps to success: 1. Key Vocabulary multiply, lots of, times, groups, partition 5. Add to find the total 4. Multiply the unit by the one digit number 3. Multiply the tens by the one digit number 2. Add to the grid frame. parition the 2 digit number Top tip: Do not add original numbers as well 17 x 6 = Mar 10 13:48 9

Maths: To multiply using grid method. Steps to success: Key Vocabulary multiply, lots of, times, groups, partition 5. Add to find the total 4. Multiply the unit by the tens and the unit 3. Multiply the tens by the tens and the units 2. Add to the grid frame. 1. Parition the both numbers Top tip: Do not add original numbers as well 34 x 16 = Mar 10 13:49 10

Maths: To multiply using vertical method. Steps to success: 1. 5. Add to find the total 4. 3. 2. Record vertically Parition the both numbers Key Vocabulary multiply, lots of, times, groups, partition Multiply the unit by the tens and the unit Multiply the tens by the tens and the units Top tip: Do not add original numbers as well 42 x 18 = Mar 10 13:49 11

Maths: To find a remainder using a number line. Steps to success: Key Vocabulary divide, share, equal groups of 4. Count the jumps 3. Count back in jumps Write the largest amount at the start of the 2. line. 1. Draw your blank number line 31 10 = 0 1 11 21 31 Mar 10 13:50 15

Maths: To divide using the bus stop method. Steps to success: Calculate how many 'divsiors' go into the 4. next number. 3. Carry over any remainders to next digit to become the tens 2. Calculate how many 'divisors' go into the first digit 1. Lay out calculation using division grid 22 2 = 124 7 Mar 10 13:52 16

Maths: To divide using the chunking method. Steps to success: 4. The remainder is recorded as a fraction. Repeat the process. 3. Take away a multiple of the 'divisor' from the main number. 2. 1. Calculate how close you can get to the number you are dividing, using multiples of ten (of the divisor) Lay out calculation using division grid 124 7 563 6 Mar 10 13:52 17
