Lasers Softball 2016 Season Player / Parent Information Sheet To: All Potential Lou Gehrig Travel Players and Parents With the 2016 Player Tryouts fast approaching, we would like you and your daughter(s) to carefully read this information BEFORE committing to the Lou Gehrig Lasers Travel Softball Program. While travel softball teams are vastly rewarding and fun for all, it requires a level of commitment from both the player(s) and parents. Travel softball requires your commitment! Parent involvement and participation is a critical requirement on every travel team. With your daughter s selection to a team you, as a parent, are also joining the team. When determining your vacation plans or other activities, you will need to consider the team s game and tournament schedules. Travel softball practice begins for most teams in October with some indoor practices during the teams scheduled times at the Lasers Indoor Training facility at 8500 Roll Road, Clarence, NY (corner of Harris Hill and Roll Rd. behind the Waxing Studio/Golf Discovery bldg.). Many Lasers teams also compete in the Sahlens winter indoor league. We encourage girls to play other sports; however, missing practices, Metro / NFL games, and tournament weekend games can affect how much your daughter will play, the position(s) she may play, and her selection for a team the following year. Travel softball is a team commitment and continued absences affect the overall ability of the entire team! Between May and August, players can expect to play between 30 and 45 games at the travel level. Tryouts Tryouts occur annually at Lou Gehrig in August. Girls will be evaluated in the areas of hitting, fielding, throwing, and running. Evaluators will consist of Lou Gehrig Board Members and coaches who do not have a daughter at the respective level, and possibly outside evaluators with an expertise in softball fundamentals. During tryouts, parents are asked to stay in the bleachers and away from the players unless requested. This will minimize the distraction to the girls and allow the evaluators to do their jobs. Some parents may be asked to help out with the younger
children within the dugouts. This will be for safety reasons, as we do not want the girls swinging bats and throwing balls without direct supervision. During tryouts, players are not permitted to wear anything that contains a logo, marking, or identification of ANY travel softball program. This includes shirts, shorts, socks, hats, etc. If your daughter is unable to change into non-travel team clothing, we will ask her to wear something we provide or we will cover the logo with duct tape. Selection Process The number of teams Lou Gehrig will field is directly related to the number of girls that tryout for our teams. Our goal is to assemble competitive teams at each level of play with the purpose of playing competitive fast pitch softball. We typically have a large number of girls that tryout every year, and unfortunately, some girls will not make a Lasers travel team for their particular level. If your daughter does not make the travel team, we encourage her to continue with the house program and continue to develop her skills. Lou Gehrig offers many off season clinics to help develop those skills. Lou Gehrig is one of the few travel leagues that allows open tryouts, as many have gone to invitation only. The Softball Travel Team Selection Committee oversees the selection process for all teams. Teams will not necessarily be comprised of the top 11 or 12 players, but rather the top 11 or 12 players that the Manager and the Committee feel will comprise the best team. Some or all of the factors described below will be taken into consideration when selecting a player to a team. 1) Prior year s performance and commitment on a travel team, if applicable. 2) Attitude & hustle. 3) Skills evaluation at the tryouts 4) House League evaluations from the prior season, if applicable. 5) Interviews with the previous team Manager and assistant coaches, if applicable. Those involved in the selection process include the Selection Committee, Team Manager, Travel Team Director, and Softball President. The best advice we can give you is to work with your daughter every day to improve her skills. Roster Announcements We anticipate that the selection process will be finalized once tryouts are completed for all levels. It is the responsibility of the player s parent/guardian to ensure that the league has been given the proper email/phone number during or prior to the Tryouts.
Players selected for individual teams will be notified by the coach within 24 hours of the tryout in most cases. The final rosters for all teams will be placed on our website at www.laserstravelsoftball.com when all rosters are complete. Players who were not selected for a team will be notified by email once all tryouts are completed. Travel Program Team Requirements Each Lou Gehrig Lasers team will typically play a minimum of four (4) tournaments. One will be hosted at the Lou Gehrig complex and one or two may be an away tournaments (outside WNY). The Team Manager will make the tournament selection with input from the Travel Team Director. More tournaments are encouraged, but are at the discretion of the Team Manager. Each travel team will be registered to play in the Metro Girls Softball League (Metro) or the Niagara Frontier Girls Softball Association (a/k/a NFL). Each league consists of approximately 12 games plus playoffs. The 10U Developmental team may play in a league. The Lou Gehrig Lasers Travel Committee strongly urges ALL players to participate in the House Program. The House Program is a rewarding experience that allows the players to build their skills at other positions and continue to play with their friends. All 8U, 10U and 12U Laser players are required to participate in the House Program. The only exception to this are those players playing on the highest level 12U team. Participation in the house program is optional for members of all other travel teams (14U, 16U and 18U) but is STRONGLY encouraged. Players required to participate in the House Program must attend at least 50% of the House games in order to remain eligible for their Lasers teams. Lasers games at the 10U & 12U levels are played on a specific days during the week so there are no conflicts with travel softball for weekday games. Weekend house games end by 5pm and typically do not conflict with travel league play. There is a growing trend of players to play for multiple travel teams, this is discouraged by the Laser Program and must be reviewed with your coach prior to participation. Laser players that are playing for outside non-laser teams are not allowed to compete directly against any Lou Gehrig Laser team regardless of the Age Group. If you are playing for a non-lasers team in a tournament or league game and that team is playing a Lasers team, you must sit out the game. Please advise the coach from your non-lasers team that this will need to happen if the situation arises. Player Development The Lasers Travel Softball Program has a private indoor turfed training facility for the exclusive use of the travel program. Each team will typically have 3 hours per week of dedicated time. The frequency and attendance requirement for these sessions is determined by the coaching staff for each team.
Outside batting and/or pitching instruction is not included with this facility. Any additional instruction MAY be funded by the individual team at the Manager s discretion. We are proud to offer instructional clinics in the offseason as part of our Travel Program. The clinics typically take place at an indoor facility between January and April. Team related clinics, such as the fielding and throwing clinics, are underwritten by your team fees. We also offer a 10-week pitching clinic for Lasers pitchers. Your coach will determine which girls can attend, free of charge, from your team. Those girls who want to attend but have not been designated by their coach can pay the pitching clinic fee. Please communicate with your coach regarding the Lasers pitching clinic if you are interested. Cost A non-refundable $175 deposit is required to be paid within 24 hours of notification of selection to a Lasers team. This check is made payable to your coach. Your spot on the team is only guarantied when the fee is paid. After 24 hours, your spot can be given to another player. The final per player cost will be determined after all teams are selected. Part of the total fee will be paid online to Lou Gehrig to cover the costs of our indoor training facility (a/k/a Roll Rd.), clinics and the Lasers tournament with the remaining money paid to the team to cover respective league fees and non-lasers tournaments. The fee for this past 2015 season was $585 (excluding uniforms). Of that fee, $400 was paid to Lou Gehrig to cover fixed costs such as Roll Rd., clinics, field maintenance, equipment, etc. The remaining $175 was paid to the team for league fees and tournaments. At this time we do not anticipate the fee to increase much for 2016. For those girls that need a uniform, it will cost approx. $100. The uniform set typically includes 2 shirts, pants, shorts, socks, and a belt. Other Lasers apparel will be available for purchase at the player s expense. As an organization we are changing uniforms for the 2016 season. Any current Lasers players that make a 2016 team will not be able to use their uniform again. New players will need to purchase a uniform set. The $175 non-refundable deposit represents the fee paid to the team and will cover league play (Metro or NFL) and some tournament costs. Fundraising or additional contributions to the team may be necessary in order to cover all other costs associated with travel softball (i.e.: team apparel, team party, additional tournaments, outside instruction, etc.). In some cases, fundraising efforts may result in all or part of the team fee being refunded. All families have the opportunity to fundraise to lower their cost of playing.
Lasers travel softball can make special payments arrangements, when warranted. Please bring these requests to the attention of your coach. Questions and inquiries may be directed to the VP Travel Softball at lasers@lgybs.com. Thanks to all for participating!
