These aspects of our program will help ensure your goals for business school will translate into real lifetime value for your educational investment. A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN An MBA is a once-in-a-lifetime investment in yourself that will have a profound impact on your professional career as well as on many other facets of your life. Your business school will shape your circle of friends, your initial job out of graduate school, your lifestyle and your lifelong network of alumni. This is not a decision to be made lightly, so weigh your options carefully. I encourage you to ask lots of questions about qualities that distinguish the schools you consider. For example, does the school offer quality interaction with faculty? Will you be able to concentrate on the facet of business in which you intend to pursue your career? How involved is the university with the greater business community? You ll find this community will be another important classroom for you, offering internships, mentor guidance, expert speakers and possible job prospects. So choose wisely. At the Cox School of Business you will discover: A private-school environment that fosters close relationships with your professors A strong international reputation An MBA program deeply connected to the business community Significant opportunities for global immersion The ability to concentrate your MBA on a particular area of interest Personalized career management An active and effective global alumni network A strong return on your investment If you are a talented, ambitious individual who wants a private-school setting that facilitates personal relationships with professors, a rigorous curriculum and strong professional ties with the business and global alumni networks, you ll like what you find at SMU Cox. While the Cox School has international reach, we also enjoy a local touch. Dallas s diverse and robust economy, vibrant culture and low cost of living make it an ideal place to live, go to school and build a foundation for a lifelong career. Home to numerous public and private corporate headquarters, opportunities abound. Our local business leaders have international caché and make an effort to enhance our students experiences via mentoring programs, consulting projects and our executive speaker series. Consider your choices carefully, as you have many. I think you ll find our MBA program will not only transform your understanding of business and the global economy, but will also provide a lifetime of opportunities upon graduation. Wherever your career path takes you. Albert W. Niemi, Jr. Dean, SMU Cox School of Business 1

DYNAMIC LOCATION DALLAS, TEXAS: NOT JUST A CITY A PASSPORT Dallas has always exuded a spirit of can-do optimism. From its roots as a cattle, oil and energy boomtown to its transformation and recognition as one of the best places on the planet to conduct business, our unbridled enthusiasm is celebrated throughout the community. Dallas has a healthy economy ripe for new MBAs. Just consider recent statistics for our hometown: #2 Fastest Growing Metropolitan Region #5 for Job Growth (Bureau of Labor Statistics) #5 Best City for New Grads (CareerBuilder) #6 Largest Economy in the U.S. (and #14 in the world) #7 Next Big Boom Town (Forbes.com) #10 Best Places for Business and Careers (Forbes) 127 of the Inc. 5000 companies are headquartered here Beyond the classroom or office, Dallas is brimming with places to see which is easy to do considering there are 232 sunny days per year. You ll find the largest urban arts district in America, a vibrant music scene, 10 professional sports teams and the most restaurants per capita all of which are affordable given that the cost of living is 8.2 percent less than the U.S. average. It s no wonder the Dallas metroplex is consistently ranked as one of the top places to graduate, work and live. SMU COX THRIVES IN THE HEART OF THIS DYNAMIC CITY The Dallas business community surrounds and supports the Cox School of Business. More than 700 local executives, entrepreneurs and civic leaders serve on SMU committees and boards. In addition, SMU plays host to internationally sought-after speakers, authors, globally minded forums and conferences such as TEDxSMU and the Tate Lecture Series, thanks to our international pull and prestigious reputation. The Dallas Salary Advantage While Cox graduates work all over the U.S. and the world, many Cox MBAs take advantage of Dallas s affordable Cost of Living Index, allowing their post- MBA salaries to go a long way, relative to other major markets. Just look at a comparison of a $90,000 salary in Dallas to the equivalent in other major cities: In the past few years, SMU has welcomed speakers such as former president George W. and Laura Bush, Tom Brokaw, the Dalai Lama, Ruth Ginsberg, Condoleezza Rice, Michael Lewis, Marcus Buckingham, Henry Kissinger, T. Boone Pickens, Katie Couric, Regis Philbin, Ray Hunt, Vincente Fox, Will Ferrell and a host of other CEOs, civic and political leaders. As opposed to many mentor programs, Cox students can actually pick their preferred mentor they are not simply assigned. Following a series of networking events in the fall, students submit their preference, receive their match and begin a professional association that thrives long after graduation. Here at Cox, in addition to foundational coursework in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, operations and organizational behavior, students can focus their studies on a specific area or field of interest. In fact, students may concentrate in up to two areas of academic specialization, as well as pursue less time-intensive minors, for a truly customized academic experience. In conjunction with SMU s Dedman School of Law, students may pursue their JD/MBA. And, for those interested in Arts Management, we offer an MA/MBA in partnership with SMU s Meadows School of the Arts. The smaller class size, which offered the balance of visibility, autonomy and one-on-one instruction, and the wealth of internship and job opportunities in the area were a large part of my decision to attend SMU Cox. 4

You will meet with executives to learn about doing business in that region, discuss political policies and their impact upon the local economy, and visit important historical and cultural sites.
