2016 AUSTRALIAN OPEN WOMEN S MATCH NOTES MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA JAN 18-31, 2016 GRAND SLAM TOURNAMENT FINAL QUICK HITS: Serena Williams has reached her 26th Grand Slam singles final. In the Open Era, Chris Evert reached the most Grand Slam finals, with 34 (18-16 win-loss record), followed by Martina Navratilova (32; 18-14) and Steffi Graf (31; 22-9) From her 25 previous Grand Slam singles finals, Williams won 21 of them - including six at the Australian Open (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009-10, 2015). She has never lost a final here Margaret Court reached 29 Grand Slam singles finals, going 24-5 overall and 11-1 in the Open Era Angelique Kerber has advanced to the first Grand Slam singles final of her career, having previously fallen in two semifinals (at 2011 US Open and 2012 Wimbledon) Kerber is the first German finalist at any major since Sabine Lisicki (2013 Wimbledon, l. Bartoli) and first into an Australian Open final since Huber in 1996. The last German champion at the Australian Open was Steffi Graf in 1994. Kerber is seeded No.7; the last player seeded No.7 to win the Australian Open was S.Williams in 2005 Kerber is the first left-hander to reach the final of the Australian Open since Monica Seles went all the way to the title in 1996. The last leftie to win a Grand Slam title was Petra Kvitova at 2014 Wimbledon Williams hasn t dropped a set en route to the final; the last player to win the Australian Open title without the loss of a set was Maria Sharapova in 2008. In Williams' six previous Australian Open title runs she has dropped at least one set en route Kerber has spent two hours longer on court than her opponent today; 9h26 compared to Williams 7hrs The 2016 Australian Open marks Kerber s second final of the season, having previously finished runner-up at Brisbane (l. Azarenka, who she defeated in the quarterfinal stage here) Number of hard court titles won by the finalists: Williams (45), Kerber (4) The Australian Open final has been decided in three sets on 13 occasions, the last 3-set final coming in 2013. Kerber owns a 77-65 career record in 3-set matches (3-0 in 2016), while Williams record stands at 147-55 (both main draw only) Three of Williams six finals here have gone to three sets (2003, 2005, 2010); she recovered from losing the first set in 2005 to lift the title, whereas she lost the middle set in 2003 and 2010 Kerber has faced five unseeded players en route to the final (exception is No.14 seed Azarenka). In comparison, Williams has not only faced two seeded players, but both were ranked inside the Top 5 in the WTA Rankings (No.4 A.Radwanska and No.5 Sharapova) In the Open Era, only four women have won the Australian Open seeded lower than No.5: unranked Chris O'Neil (1978) and S.Williams (2007), No.12 Capriati (2001) and No.7 S.Williams (2005) Kerber would also be the lowest-ranked title winner of the Australian Open since No.81 S.Williams in 2007 This is Williams 20th time being the No.1 seed at a Grand Slam (she's won 11 of the previous 19) Kerber began run to final in 1r by saving a match point during defeat of Doi; the last Grand Slam champion to save match points during a title run was Li Na here at Australian Open in 2014 (saved one match point during 3r match vs. Safarova). In addition, in the Open Era, three other women (on four occasions) have won the Australian Open after saving match point: Monica Seles (1991), Jennifer Capriati (2002) and Serena Williams (2003 and 2005) Follow WTA on Twitter: www.twitter.com/wta Facebook: www.facebook.com/wta YouTube Channel:

Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) 32 2006 Australian Open Jennifer Capriati (USA) 29 2001 Australian Open Kerry Melville Reid (AUS) 29 1977 Australian Open (Jan) Lindsay Davenport (USA) 26 1998 US Open Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 25 2012 Australian Open Kim Clijsters (BEL) 22 2005 US Open Gabriela Sabatini (ARG) 21 1990 US Open Li Na (CHN) 20 2011 Roland Garros Conchita Martinez (ESP) 20 1994 Wimbledon Kerber is bidding to become the 44th woman to win a Grand Slam singles title The most recent first-time Grand Slam champion was crowned at 2015 US Open (Pennetta); prior to that, it was 2013 Wimbledon (Bartoli) 2016 Australian Open marks the fourth consecutive Grand Slam which involves a player or players making their debut in a major final Safarova (2015 Roland Garros), Muguruza (2015 Wimbledon), Vinci and Pennetta (2015 US Open), and now Kerber (2016 Australian Open) Kerber would be the eighth different first-time Grand Slam title winner in the last 23 Slams: Schiavone (2010 Roland Garros), Li (2011 Roland Garros), Kvitova (2011 Wimbledon), Stosur (2011 US Open) and Azarenka (2012 Australian Open), Bartoli (2013 Wimbledon) and Pennetta (2015 US Open) GERMAN SUCCESS Angelique Kerber made a 1r exit here in Melbourne in 2015 (l. Begu) but has followed this up with a run to the final in 2016. The last player to do this was Russia's Dinara Safina, who lost 1r to Lisicki in 2008 and finished R-Up in 2009 (l. S.Williams) The only player in the Open Era to win the Australian Open title after a 1r exit the previous year was Kerry Melville Reid (won in 1977-Jan) Kerber is the first German woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Sabine Lisicki at 2013 Wimbledon (l. Bartoli). Across all Slams, Steffi Graf was the last German to win a major, at 1999 Wimbledon (d. Davenport) Turning our attention to the Australian Open, Kerber is the first of her countrywomen to reach the final here at Melbourne Park since Anke Huber in 1996 (l. Seles). Graf, in 1994, was the last German to win the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (d. Sanchez Vicario in F) In the Open Era, Kerber is the sixth German woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final, after Helga Niessen Masthoff (1970 Roland Garros), Sylvia Hanika (1981 Roland Garros), Anke Huber (1996 Australian Open) and Sabine Lisicki (2013 Wimbledon) and Steffi Graf. Graf is the only German player to reach more than one Grand Slam singles final (31), and also the only one of her countrywomen to lift a Grand Slam title (22) Follow WTA on Twitter: www.twitter.com/wta Facebook: www.facebook.com/wta YouTube Channel:
