Learners can browse the web-based Learning Catalog and request learning offerings. Learning offerings can be presented several ways which are called delivery types (i.e. instructor-led, web based training more detail below). In some cases, learning offerings may require manager approval. Types of Delivery Types in the Cummins Learning Center Instructor-Led Training (ILT) Instructor-led delivery types have start and end dates/times. They are scheduled learning delivered by an instructor. ILT offerings typically represent scheduled instances of the instructor-led delivery type, including date, time, location, instructor, and other resource information. For example, an instructor-led offering for Database Design Principles can be scheduled for 9:00am on 9/1/2012 in Room 100 at the Common Office Building (COM) in Columbus, IN with instructor Bob Johnson and various equipment and inventory items reserved. ILT (unscheduled) This is similar to Web Based training. This delivery type is used for Instructor-Led training that does not have a fixed date and location. This allows learners to be registered for an offering, but the details are input after completion. The scheduling is controlled outside of the Cummins Learning Center. Web Based Training (WBT) - WBT offerings typically represent different formats of the WBT delivery type, such as foreign language versions, interactive or non-interactive versions, and verbal or visual versions. WBT offerings are not scheduled for time or location. WBT typically do not have an instructor associated with them. Virtual Class - Virtual Class offerings typically represent scheduled instances of a virtual class delivery type, including date, time, and instructor. Virtual class offerings require a scheduled start date and time, but take place online in a virtual classroom or meeting place. A virtual class offering does not rely on a physical location, but it does rely on a time zone, which is necessary for fixing the start of the class at a specific point in time. The time zone for a scheduled offering is derived from the location specified for the Page 3
offering. As a result, a location must be specified for each virtual class, even though the virtual class may not take place at the location. Physical Offering - Physical offerings typically represent books and CDs which can be physically shipped to the learners. Videos on Demand - Video on Demand offerings typically represent different formats of the Video on Demand delivery type, such as foreign language versions, interactive or non-interactive versions, and verbal or visual versions. Video on Demand offerings are not scheduled for time or location. Self-Study Materials (SSM) - Self Study Materials delivery type contains materials that learners can download for on-screen review or printing. Certifications/Qualifications - A certification is a group of learning offerings that a learner must complete in order to gain a certification, be qualified in a particular technology, educational area, or field, or to define the learning offerings required for a particular job. They generally expire after a specific period of time to ensure that learners maintain current knowledge in that area. As regulatory compliance and formalized credentials become a larger part of hiring and development requirements, it is increasingly important for organizations to manage and track learner certifications. The application enables individual learners to select certification packages from the Learning Catalog. These packages can include items like tests, instructor-led courses, or web-based training that are required to comply with regulations and technical certifications. A certification consists of a set of pre-defined paths, where each path consists of a specific sequence of steps (learning modules) that must be successfully completed in order to certify knowledge or mastery of a specific skill set. Typically, a certification must be completed in a specific period of time. Page 4
