The Saxion Internationalisation Monitor (SAINT). Self-assessment at programme and institutional level Step up to Saxion. Marloes Buter Chris van den Borne

A small history Internationalisation is one of the focus areas in the last 10 years Previously no specific goals or indicators Strategic planning 2008-2012 Quality control Show input and output of internationalisation Challenge: formulate goals, targets, indicators suited for the quality control and innovation cycle The biggest challenge was to find common ground within all levels of the Saxion organisation Two design principles PDCA-cycle Distance to target

Quality Control and Innovation Management

Educational Organisational Structure Presidential Board School School Programme Programme Programme

Planning and Control Cycle 4 times a year the schools report on its progress to the presidential board 2 times a year the International Office discusses the progress, targets and means with the schools as input to bridge the distance to target The International Office takes this also as an opportunity to determine the level of support and service to the Academy

Distance to Target Target Distance to bridge Current situation

Distance to target Schools formulates or plans an own ambition or target based on the strategic planning Each school has a different starting point, first measurement is a zero audit Each school therefore has a different distance to target Each school makes its own plan to bridge the distance to target The Planning and Control Cycle is used to report on the progress

Distance to Target Input in effort

Back to the bigger picture Saxion is a regional embedded University with an international profile Every graduating student at Saxion has obtained competencies to become an international professional

Indicators Internationalisation at home - Number of ECTS dedicated to internationalisation - Number of ECTS with a component on internationalisation Mobility - Incoming and outgoing mobility International compentencies employees

Choices made Determine the unit of the data gathering On the lowest organisational level that is still usefull Ability to aggregate the data to a higher organisational level Not all data is available on the lowest organisational level Link up with other data gathering for quality assurance purposes Determine who is responsible for the data input As there is always an interpretation about definitions and questions, continuity is important Have a supporting helpdesk available Determine what kind of overviews to generate What is the purpose of the overview in relation to the distance to target What is the purpose of the overview in relation to the strategic planning and Planning and Control Cycle

Developing the instrument Websurvey Definition issues Quantitative where possible Tension between qualitative and quantitative data gathering and interpretation What is the incentive to generate the data? Data and overviews should be usefull in other quality control reports

How does it work Yearly survey in January One contactperson per school Often used as means to discuss internationalisation with programmes Results are presented in report

Some of the results Mobility data for both EU and Non-EU mobility Number of outgoing mobile students (to EU/EEA countries) Number of outgoing students and ECTS 2008/2009 Number of outgoing students and ECTS 2009/2010 Number of outgoing students and ECTS 2010/2011 Number of outgoing students and ECTS 2011/2012 Study Sep N/a N/a N/a N/a 12 30 12 30 Feb 17 30 N/a N/a 3 30 6 30 Internship Sep 9 30 39 30 48 30 55 30 Feb 24 30 61 30 52 30 55 30 Graduation Sep 1 30 0 30 0 30 1 30 assignment Feb 4 30 5 30 5 30 35 30

Some of the results Mobility data for both EU and Non-EU mobility Data on preparation programmes before, during and after mobility Overview in the number of international ECTS that students can obtain in a programme Overview of the international projects/networks that the schools participate in Overview of the international compentencies of employees, used as a means to determine need for scholing

What is the outcome Awareness on internationalisation deeper in the Saxion organisation Accountability for internationalisation Next step to our Research Centres

The Saxion Internationalisation Monitor (SAINT). Thank you Step up to Saxion. Marloes Buter Chris van den Borne
