2 West Finland FIRST network a geographical (Western Finland & Russia) and multidisciplinary network consists of four Finnish universities of applied sciences and two Finnish universities as well as 18 Russian universities 2003 St Petersburg seminar -> FIRST network was established has successfully operated for 8 years already 2

6 West Finland FIRST - A multi-disciplinary network covering nine different subject areas: Agricultural Sciences Art and Design Business Studies and Management Sciences Education/Teacher Training Engineering/ Technology Humanities Medical and Health Sciences Social Sciences or Communication and Information Sciences 6

7 Main objectives: to strengthen the academic collaboration in various forms between Finnish and Russian partner universities to promote student and teacher mobility and cultural understanding between these two countries to give the students a possibility to study and to the teachers a possibility to work in a multicultural study/teaching group at the intensive course organised by the network in St. Petersburg an IC was established to encourage students and teachers to go on long term exchange aim now to deepen the curricula co-op 7

8 Challenges in Exchanges, part 1 Western Finland balance of the exchanges? Little use of English for different courses in some of the Russian partner universities Credit transfer & recognition after the exchange? Effective use of teacher visits? 8

9 Proj Project Activities Student Mobility 40 students received a FIRST grant; total amount of exchange months was 172 Teacher Mobility 14 teachers received a FIRST grant & total amount of exchange days was 63 Intensive Course 15 students from Finnish and 15 students from Russian partner institutions 5 Finnish teachers, 4 Russian teachers, 12 other company and university representatives This 2012 Spring 19 Finnish, 19 Russian students 9

13 Import How to Be Successful in Student and Teacher Exchange Network Cooperation? Good beforehand planning for network activities Clear administration of the project and active roles of the partner universities: Good communication and cooperation between network partners Continuous quality assurance of the cooperation and evaluation of results Clear selection procedure of outgoing and incoming students Good orientation for the outgoing and incoming students and teachers Language of studies and language preparation for the students and teachers Good beforehand panning for content of the studies Clear rules for recognition of the studies, credit transfer and follow up 13

14 West Finland FIRST Network - network as a platform for exchange for information, best practices, and development of activities - FIRST programme facilitates study and teaching experiences for numerous students and teachers either in Russia or in Finland.
