I am a first-generation college bound student born in Denmark who moved to the U.S.A. at the tender age of 18 to attend the University of Central Florida where I obtained my B.S. in mathematics. I joined the University of Oxford for my graduate studies (soil mechanic), and later the UIUC for my doctoral endeavors (fluid mechanics). I planned my life exceptionally well by completing my Ph.D. during a dismal employment market. I taught at a few universities to great personal teaching satisfaction, but limited academic growth. I decided to become a librarian because my background dovetailed well with an expanding knowledge-based market. It has been rewarding to seamlessly navigate the two worlds, and to be of service in both. Where were you before Illinois College? For my professional library development, I decided on brief and deep experiences at different library systems including liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and research universities. Particular institutions include, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Baker College, University of Texas at Arlington, and Rockford College. What brings you to Illinois College? Opportunity to contribute in the success of students and faculty at a superior liberal arts college, diverse collection of friendly people, developing roots, and working with great library staff to transition the Schewe Library into the 21st century. What would you like to accomplish here? Enhance visibility and reach of collections and services. Build a Digital Commons as an umbrella of the many exciting digital projects at IC, and a Digital Learning Center for students and faculty to learn how to best integrate technology and knowledge for their e-portfolios and e-scholarship. How might members of the campus community benefit from contacting you? My academic training spanning the sciences, personal affinity for the humanities as well as my teaching experience are direct means by which I can assist, but I also think my affable and unflappable personality will be of value. What would you most like the campus community to know about you? I look forward to making the Schewe Library even better.

Brown Bag Lunch Session: Mapping Information Literacy Standards to your Curriculum Schewe Library is hosting a brown bag lunch on Wednesday September 12 at 11am right after Chapel. Our topic will be Mapping Information Literacy Competency Standards to your Information Literacy General Education Curriculum. We will go over the Association of College Resource Library s information literacy competency standards, provide examples of how you can use them to assess your classes and give you time to work on your own rubrics with the librarians! We want to support you as you begin redesigning your courses to contain the information literacy embedded experience. The Schewe Librarians have extensive experience teaching information literacy and can help you integrate your learning objectives within the entire Information Literacy Curriculum! July 2012 saw the gathering of the last group of Mellon Heads who gathered around the chalkboard (or computer screen) to learn about technology and education. With the help of IT and Schewe Library, the three -year Mellon Technology Seminar Series wrapped up with a flurry of innovation, collaboration, and the cementing of new friendships. Faculty members who attended this year s seminar were taken on a whirlwind tour of various educational tools and technologies. Time flew as they debated and discussed information literacy, issues in education and technology, and copyright! The Mellon Heads got the opportunity to listen to and meet some wonderful guest speakers. Tami Eggleston began the seminar with a presentation on how to use technology to personalize your class. David Westbrook introduced Google+ and Google Hangouts. Jim Jorstad was an invited speaker who talked about his experience as an I-Reporter for CNN. Faculty themselves became I-Reporters, and learned about how to use reporting tools and tactics to capture the attention of their students. In fact, the July 20th issue of Jacksonville s Journal Courier gave front page coverage of Accounting Professor Nausser Jamali and IT student Jafar Qutob reports to CNN a stamp of approval both locally and nationally. Mellon Heads learned to use Google tools, Moodle, Snag-It, Glogster and much, much more. They listened to webinars and tutorials on databases like ARTstor and tools like Poll Everywhere. Mike Westbrook, the Reference Librarian at Schewe Library, led discussions on information literacy issues and library resources. Brittney Thomas presented on the daunting and alarmingly real topic of copyright. Past Mellon Heads also dropped by to show off their cool, innovative projects that came out of previous seminars. As a grand finale for the 2012 Mellon Technology Seminar, Mellon Heads developed their own project for the upcoming semester using the various tools they were introduced to over the past 10 days. The final two days were filled with show and tell where even more ideas were shared. The Seminar also ended on a bittersweet note. The Mellon Heads had to say goodbye to a beloved peer, friend, and instructor, Pat Headen, the spearhead of the Mellon Head Team who left Illinois College to take the next step in her career. Thanks Pat for everything. We couldn t have done it without you!
Weeding To accommodate a vibrant and relevant print book collection that best reflects current and perceived future instructional and research needs, the Schewe Library is undertaking a much needed weeding program of its approximately 120,000 circulating print books. As part of this exciting program, faculty are strongly encouraged to visit the Faculty Review Shelves just to the left as you enter Schewe to review books they might find useful for instructional or research purposes books that you strongly think the library should keep should be placed on the nearby purple book truck. Please fill out the brief form for each book you wish for the library to keep. Faculty members will be notified via e-mail of the call number range(s) considered for weeding. To proper-size our approximately 120,000 books, it is necessary to keep the review window to seven business days.
