Professional Diploma in LEan Six Sigma (Black Belt) Introduction Lean Six Sigma Lean Six Sigma is an integrated quality management tool widely promoted such as in the US, Europe, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Hong Kong. It combines two most popular quality management tools which are Lean and Six Sigma to benefit organizations to enjoy speed and quality. Lean is a quality management tool developed by Toyota. It is a relentless pursuit of the elimination of waste, the non-value added activities, in the process of production or service generation. The benefits of implementing Lean can be broken down into three broad categories which are operational, administrative and strategic improvement. Six Sigma is the quality management tool to reduce variation with the primary goal to improve both service and product quality. With the introduction of Six Sigma, Motorola achieved a five-fold growth in sales, with profits climbing nearly 20 percent per year between 1987 and 1997. Cumulative savings of Motorola based on Six Sigma initiatives reached US$ 14 billion. Other corporations greatly benefited from Six Sigma includes GE (a saving of US$12 billion over 5 years) and Honeywell (a saving of US$ 1.8 billion between 1998-2000) 1 Lean Six Sigma is an integrated and balanced combination of Lean and Six Sigma to exploit speed and quality to achieve full optimization in the business (management) process. PROGRAMME The Professional Diploma in Lean Six Sigma (Black Belt) is jointly offered by the School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University (SCE) and the Six Sigma Institute (SSI). This programme provides an opportunity for participants to receive a specialized training in Lean Six Sigma to eventually become a Lean Six Sigma (Black Belt) professional to contribute to the quality management of their organizations. 1 http://www.sixsigmainstitute.com
PROGRAMME Objectives Upon completion of the programme, graduates are expected to: 1. acquire professional knowledge and practice of Lean and Six Sigma; 2. command the skills and techniques in the reduction of cycle times, defects and cost; 3. perform the roles and responsibilities of Six Sigma Green Belt and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt professionals; 4. analyse, identify and recommend projects with high probability for success; 5. develop and implement Lean Six Sigma projects in their organizations. admission Requirements To qualify for admission to the programme, applicants should possess either one of the following requirements: 1. Be a holder of a SCE Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience; or 2. Be aged 23 or above with 5 years relevant work experience; or 3. Hold other equivalent qualifications approved by SCE and SSI. Assessment Requirements To be awarded the Professional Diploma in Lean Six Sigma, participants must satisfy all the following requirements: 1. obtained a minimum 75% attendance for each course; 2. satisfactorily completed all the required assignments; 3. obtained a pass in each course examination. Professional Recognition Successful graduates of the Professional Diploma in Lean Six Sigma (Black Belt) can apply to enroll in the qualifying programme offered by Six Sigma Institute (SSI). Those who pass the qualifying programme, including the project examination, are eligible to register with SSI as Registered Quality Professional (Lean Black Belt), denoted as RQP (LBB) on business cards or other credentials. Furthermore, a registered Black Belt professional with SSI, RQP(LBB), can apply for the Certified Black Belt of China Association for Quality (CAQ) ( 中國質量協會 ) provided that the applicant also meets the other CAQ registration requirements.
