Wady [wah-dee]: a stream that flows through a valley, gully or streambed in Northern Africa that remains dry except during the rainy season. The Wady Shop was established in 2003 as one of the ministries of the Episcopal/Anglican Diocese of Egypt. There are currently two shops open in Cairo: one in Zamalek at the Anglican Cathedral compound and the other in Maadi. The shop is meant to be a window into the Diocese projects and ministries for people in the outside community. The Diocese has several programs focused on self-reliance and development where different crafts are produced and then sold in the Wady Shop. The programs from which we pull items to sell are Refuge Egypt, a woman s aid program for widows and single mothers, the Deaf Unit Vocational Training Center, a school for the blind, the social service program for disadvantaged families, the prison ministry and we help sponsor several independent producers including Egyptians and African Refugees. Our Mission and Values: The Wady shop exists to support the ministries of the Diocese of Egypt through providing sales opportunities for individuals in order to increase their income generation, regardless of religion, gender or social status. We do this by: 1. Being a showcase for the ministries of the Diocese and raising awareness about the programs and the lives of people who are being touched. 2. Helping the targeted groups earn their living in a dignified and honest way. 3. Empowering individuals to become self-reliant. PLEASE NOTE: a minimum of 10 items of each kind may be purchased in each order. If you have a special request, though, we can be flexible.
Program Information The Boulaq Center is located in Zamalek in Cairo, Egypt. Through this program, poor women, often elderly or widowed, both Muslim and Christian, have access to vocational training, education courses, and the opportunity to create crafts to sell. This opportunity increases their self-esteem and belief in themselves, as well as helping sustain their families. Creative Crafts is one of our independent producer programs that was originally founded to support poor women and widows in Upper Egypt and has now expanded to recruiting women and girls from poor areas in Cairo. This program allows women to work from home and produce embroidery, which shows scenes from daily life in Egypt. Many of the women are taught how to sew, crochet, cross-stitch and quilt in order to support their families. The Menouf Social Center has been created to provide educational and economically focused programs for people living in Menouf, a city north of Cairo. Ibrahim is one of the beneficiaries of this program. Through the help of the Social Center, Ibrahim was able to begin selling his mother-of-pearl inlay products at the Wady Shop. This has allowed him to increase the livelihood of his family and is even able to employ others to help with product production. Tukul Crafts is a vocational program that is a part of Refuge Egypt, which promotes African culture and creates an income for displaced Sudanese refugees in Egypt. This program makes unique tailor made products with screen-printed traditional designs with the help of a team of tailors and artists. Other artists, like Wilson, have joined the program in order to help find ways to sell their personal art. In Wilson s case, he needed somewhere to sell his paintings, and Tukul Crafts and the Wady Shop were able to do this for him. The Vocational Training Center for the Disabled is a center located in 6th October City in the outskirts of Cairo. This center aims to provide opportunities to disabled adults to become self-reliant. Currently, the program focuses on working with Deaf adults but hopes to soon welcome more people to their programs, teaching people skills in the areas of sewing, woodwork and metalwork.
