A Mere Telling of the Timeline Tale of Your Life and Trauma as Told by your Telomeres and Telomerase (along with a foretelling of your vitality and Time left) Walter J. Crinnion ND

Just how many cell divisions do you have left?

Just how many cell divisions do you have left? For those with limited reproduction ability you have stem cells

Stem Cells Tissue and cell specific A bank of healthy stem cells insures Cellular replacement Tissue and organ function The balance between cell death and cell replacement is strictly maintained Reduced cell replacement is the cause of aging and chronic disease

Declining Cell Replication oxidative stress Shorter Telomeres Diminished Telomerase activity replicative senescence

Cell Reproduction Telomeres at the end of each chromosome allow the chromosomes to perfectly reproduce. Telomeres get shorter with each reproduction and via aging, oxidative stress and emotional stress If telomeres get too short chromosomes get stuck in reproduction

Telomerase Replaces lost telomere length Activity of telomerase is reduced by oxidation and stress Telomerase activity inverse to level of body inflammation

Cells with high telomerase activity All stem cells Rapidly dividing cells: Epithelium (all surface linings) Hair follicles Liver RBC and WBC Liver, Reproductive Organs, Spleen Brain

Telomere Length Lost in each cell reproduction 20 base pairs 200 base pairs High Antioxidant Levels Low Antioxidant Levels

Nurses Health Study Ongoing study of 121,700 nurses Began in 1976 A subset of 38,825 provided blood samples in 1989/90 4676 with telomere length and food-frequency questionnaire completed were selected Telomere length measured in WBC

Mediterranean Diet High Intake of: Vegetables Fruits Nuts Legumes Whole grains Olive oil Moderately high intake of: Fish Red wine Low intake of: Dairy Meat Poultry

Documented health benefits to amount of adherence to Med. Diet Reduction in overall mortality Reduction of Cardiovascular illness Reduction of all chronic diseases Increased lifespan

Dietary assessment in this study Participants filled out food frequency questionnaire in 1980 for previous year s diet Re-filled out every 4 years With expanded 130-food list Alternated Mediterranean Diet Score Rates 0-9 for adherence to the MD

Results Mean age: 59 yrs Age range 42 70 Telomere length inversely correlated with age Smokers had shorter telomeres The higher the compliance with Mediterranean diet the longer the telomeres were ( higher age adjusted telomere length ) Statistically significant No association with individual diet components

2013 - PMID: 23646142.

This study 217 elderly Italians from Campania Mean age 78 Telomere length & telomerase activity tested All assessed with: Full medical history Lab, history and physical Functional and cognitive status Assessment for chronic illness Dietary assessment Activities of Daily Living

Health rating Healthy : top 10% in ADL scale (score >90) Absence of HTN, CHF, MI, Peripheral vasc. Disease, stroke, dementia, COPD Unhealthy : ADL score <80 Two or more of the above diseases

Dietary Assessment Same Mediterranean Diet Score method Rating 0-9 Low adherence: <3 ( 32.3%) Medium adherence: 4-5 ( 31.3%) High adherence: >6 (36.4%)

Results The 36% with high adherence had significantly longer telomeres and significantly greater telomerase activity. And Lower CRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha Inflammation independently associated with telomerase activity (inversely)
