Introduction Lightning Express is a magnification software package for the modern PC. Whatever appears on the computer screen can be magnified up to 6 times and it works well with most Windows applications and video clips can also be magnified. It is easy to install and just as easy to use. If you want speech as well as magnification you need Thunder, a free speech output screenreader, or another of our software packages. Mouse or Keyboard Throughout this helpfile, we refer to clicking the mouse. When the mouse pointer is on a word or object, clicking the left mouse button once will highlight and double-clicking the left button will activate it. Using the Keyboard Lightning Express is mainly designed for mouse use but it is possible to quickly increase or decrease your current level of magnification by holding down the CTRL key with your left hand and pressing + or - (plus or minus) with your right hand on the keypad.

The Lightning Express Toolbar The Lightning Express toolbar is used to execute the following functions: Changing the Level of magnification Colour Inversion Changing the magnifying lens Configuring the Cursor Style The toolbar normally appears on the left-hand top corner of the desktop screen. When you open an application such as Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer, Lightning Express is still working although the toolbar is hidden. If you want to get back to the toolbar to make changes, right click on Lightning Express at the bottom of the screen in the taskbar or hold down the ALT key and keep pressing the TAB key until the Lightning Express toolbar appears again or hold down CTRL and press * on the number pad. Lightning Express can be controlled using your computer mouse or using the keyboard keys to navigate the file menu at the top of the Lightning Express toolbar.

Changing the Level of Magnification Bring the Lightning Express toolbar into view as described in the previous section. On the toolbar there are two buttons to change the level of magnification. To change the level of magnification until you find the size that suits you best, click on the plus (+) or minus (-) button. Lightning Express will remember your choice whenever you turn your computer on and you can change size at any time to meet the needs of your current task.

Colour Inversion Some people prefer to look at white bright letters against a black background rather than dark letters against a white background. Bring the Lightning Express toolbar into view. To do this, click on the invert icon on the toolbar. scheme. This will invert the colour When you next click on the Invert icon, the colours will revert to what they were originally. Using the keyboard to drive Lightning Express, the shortcut key is Ctrl / on the keypad. Within the Microsoft Windows Operating System, it is possible to change colour schemes, font styles and sizes. Click here to get advice on how to get the most out of your Microsoft products.

Changing the Magnifying Lens The Lens button allows you to change the area of magnification. Clicking the button cycles between full screen, small lens and no magnification. Magnification Modes Full Screen Magnification This is the default and most widely used option. This magnifies the entire screen. The Magnifying Lens This mode magnifies a small square on the screen. The rest of the screen is unmagnified. No Magnification This mode switches magnification off.

Configuring the Cursor Style It is possible to change the colour of the mouse cursor, if the default white is not suitable for you. To do this, click the button that has a red cursor on it. The cursor will change colour each time you click on it so keep clicking until you find the right cursor for you. Using Magnification with Speech Output Lightning Express is purely a magnification program and there is no speech output facility. If you find you would like to have speech as well as magnification then you need another of our software packages such as Thunder, available to download free from www.screenreader.net Exiting Lightning Express To exit Lightning Express, click on the Close symbol toolbar. Magnification will now cease. on the Lightning Express Microsoft Program Accesibility Microsoft provide accessibility information and tips on all of their products, so to get the most out of your PC, visit their website: www.microsoft.com/enable Support & Contact Good luck with your Lightning Express, your new magnifier software.
