A convenient option for replacing a leased line is a wireless GPRS connection. It might be possible for very timing-critical applications that it is not possible to use a GPRS connection. Use this publication to find out how to replace an existing leased line connection with two leased line modems (one in originate and one in answer operation) with two GPRS modems with cellular radio contracts with a fix IP address seamlessly. Please note that the fix IP address must also be accessible. Some providers provide IP addresses that can not be accessed. Beyond these basic functions, you can enhance the reliability of your GPRS connection by configuring a daily logout/login of the cellular engine, the dispatch of keep-alive packets, or a PPP connection check for example. Refer to the GPRS 5.x serial manual for further information about this. The following figure shows the replacement of a leased line connection (top) with two INSYS GPRS 5.x serial (bottom) to connect two terminals via the GPRS cellular network. Further information about the steps described here can be found in the "Mounting" section of the operator manual. 1. Mount the GPRS modem to the DIN rail. 2. Install the cellular radio antenna at a suitable location and connect the antenna to the antenna connection of the GPRS modem. 3. Connect the power supply to the terminals 1 or 4 (GND) and 3 (10..60 VDC). If further connections, like reset or inputs and outputs are intended, these must be made according to the instructions in the manual. You have installed the GPRS modem with this. This procedure must be performed in the same way for the remote terminal. 3.2 Configuring Devices Configuring GPRS Modems for Replacement of a Leased Line The two GPRS modems must be configured accordingly before they can be used for the leased line replacement operation. One device must be configured as calling terminal (Originate) and one as accepting terminal (Answer) for this. The latest version of the configuration software HSComm GPRS is installed and started on the PC that is used for configuration (available on http://www.insys-tec.de/software/).
