Introduction Microsoft released Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 on March 31, 2005. A number of the significant changes introduced in this service pack cause problems with the normal installation and operation of AppManager 6.0 and 5.0.1. This paper provides an overview of the conflicts and corresponding corrective actions for these releases. Note: AppManager releases prior to 5.0.1 are not supported for use in conjunction with Windows Server 2003. 1
AppManager 6.0 Suite and Windows Server 2003 SP1 In delivering AppManager 6.0 support for Windows Server 2003 SP1, NetIQ s primary goal was to keep it as simple and straightforward for customers as possible. For this reason, in most cases upgrading your AppManager 6.0 environment to support Windows Server 2003 SP1 entails: 1. Upgrading all systems running AppManager 6.0 core components (repository, management server, consoles) to AppManager 6.0.2 2. Upgrading AppManager agents running on Windows Server 2003 components to AppManager 6.0.2 3. Applying Windows Server 2003 SP1 How to Get AppManager 6.0.2 AppManager 6.0.2 is available for download from http://www.netiq.com/support/am/extended/upgrade.asp. Instructions for applying AppManager 6.0.2 included in the download; please see the release notes/instructions. Agent Upgrade AppManager 6.0 Agents before applying Windows Server 2003 SP1 Existing AppManager 6.0 agents must be upgraded to AppManager 6.0.2 before applying Windows Server 2003 SP1. This is a 2 step process: 1) Upgrade the AppManager 6.0 agents with AppManager 6.0.2 2) Apply Windows Server 2003 SP1 Installing new AppManager 6.0.2 agents The AppManager 6.0.2 agent is required for installation of new AppManager agents on systems already running Windows Server 2003 SP1. Upgrading from AppManager 5.0.1 For the best possible experience, NetIQ encourages all customers to upgrade to AppManager 6.0.2 as soon as possible. NetIQ encourages AppManager 5.0.1 customers to upgrade their AppManager core components (repository, management server, and console applications) to AppManager 6.0.2. AppManager 5.0.1 agents may be upgraded directly to AppManager 6.0.2. AppManager Core Components All systems running one or more of the AppManager core components should be upgraded to AppManager 6.0.2 prior to the installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1. The core components include the Management Servers, Repository Servers, and any AppManager console component. 2 White Paper
Complementary Products AppManager Analysis Center AppManager Analysis Center 2.0 SP1a is supported on systems running Windows Server 2003 SP1. AppManager Analysis Center 2.0 SP1a is available from http://www.netiq.com/support/am/extended/upgrade.asp AppManager Control Center AppManager Control Center 6.0.2.1 includes fixes for all known issues with Windows Server 2003 SP1. AppManager Diagnostic Console AppManager Diagnostic Console 2.x is supported on systems running Windows Server 2003 SP1. For best results, NetIQ recommends customers upgrade to AppManager Diagnostic Console 2.1 available from: http://www.netiq.com/support/am/extended/upgrade.asp AppManager Knowledge Base AppManager Knowledge Base 1.0 is supported on systems running Windows Server 2003 SP1. AppManager Performance Profiler The only known issue with using AppManager Performance Profiler 3.0.2 in a Windows 2003 SP1 environment involves the generation of trusted alarms. Refer to Knowledge Base (KB) article NETIQKB47197 available online from http://www.netiq.com/kb/esupport/consumer/esupport.asp?id=netiqkb47197 to obtain the hot fix needed to correct this problem. AppManager Reporting (Agents & Extras) There are no known issues affecting any of the AppManager 6.0 Reporting components in conjunction with Windows Server 2003 SP1. 3
AppManager 5.0.1 Suite and Windows Server 2003 SP1 For the best possible experience, NetIQ encourages all customers to upgrade to AppManager 6.0.2 as soon as possible. NetIQ encourages AppManager 5.0.1 customers to upgrade their AppManager core components (repository, management server, and console applications) to AppManager 6.0.2. AppManager 5.0.1 agents may be upgraded directly to AppManager 6.0.2 following the instructions that accompanies the AppManager 6.0.2 package available from: http://www.netiq.com/support/am/extended/upgrade.asp. If you are not able to upgrade to AppManager 6.0.2 at this time, you can get support for AppManager 5.0.1 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 as described below. In delivering AppManager 5.0.1 support for Windows Server 2003 SP1, NetIQ s primary goal was to keep it as simple and straightforward for customers as possible. For this reason, in most cases upgrading your AppManager 5.0.1 environment to support Windows Server 2003 SP1 entails: 1. Upgrading all systems running AppManager 5.0.1 core components (repository, management server, consoles) to AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 2. Upgrading AppManager agents running on Windows Server 2003 components to AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 3. Applying AppManager patch AM501CE0090 to all AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 computers running Windows Server 2003 4. Applying Windows Server 2003 SP1 Note: AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 must be applied prior to patch AM501CE0090. Installing AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 after the patch will result in the removal of the patch. How to Get AppManager Service Pack and Patch AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 is available for download from http://www.netiq.com/support/am/extended/servicepacks/sp2.asp. Instructions for applying AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 are included in the download; please see the release notes/instructions. Contact NetIQ Technical Support http://www.netiq.com/support/contactinfo.asp for instructions on how to download patches AM501CE0090 and AM501CE0092 from the NetIQ Technical Support FTP server. 4 White Paper
Agent Upgrade AppManager 5.0.1 Agents before applying Windows Server 2003 SP1 For best results, existing AppManager 5.0.1 agents must be upgraded to AppManager 5.0.1 SP2. This is a 2 step process: 1) Upgrade the AppManager 5.0.1 agents with AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 2) Apply Windows Server 2003 SP1 Installing new AppManager 5.0.1 agents For best results, contact NetIQ Technical Support to obtain a copy of AM501CE0092 which includes a new installer for the AppManager 5.0.1 agent updated with fixes needed for Windows Server 2003 SP1 compatibility. Installation of a new agent using earlier AppManager 5.0.1 SP2 packages will yield unpredictable results. AppManager Core Components (MS, QDB) Management Server (MS) Customers should obtain patch AM501CE0090 from NetIQ Technical Support and install it on all management server computers prior to applying Windows Server 2003 SP1. The management server installation fails if you attempt to install the management server on a computer running Windows Server 2003 SP1. NetIQ included a fix for this installation problem in patch AM501CE0092. Repository (QDB) As with the Management Server, all systems hosting an AppManager Repository (QDB) should have patch AM501CE0090 applied prior to the installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1. The patch corrects failures in the Security Manager and Repository Brower applications, and failures when using the KScheckout function of either the Operator Console or AppManager Control Center. Consoles Other than the KScheckout problem noted above affecting both the Operator Console and AppManager Control Center (see below), no other known issues exist. 5
