Experts for Commercial Printing To give our users and anyone else interested a quick overview of the many applications and areas that ColorGATE supports, we distinguish between Commercial Printing and Industrial Printing. Commercial Printing As we see it, the Commercial Printing sector comprises all printing services in which the printed product is identical to the end product. In this case, the printing process is the core service provided. As a result, Commercial Printing includes the processes of Digital Printing and Conventional Printing. The difference between these is the different techniques (digital or analog) the printing systems use. Prepress covers both of these processes. Digital Printing The market segment for Digital Printing we differentiate between: Large Format Printing Small Format Production Printing Conventional Printing Conventional Printing is the term used for the conventional printing processes, such as: Flexo printing Offset printing Screen printing Gravure printing Prepress Prepress designates the different processes and procedures used to prepare for printing (data preparation, layout, image processing, color management, trapping etc.) to create digital artwork masters (PDFs) or printing forms (film, plates, stencils,) for the final digital or conventional printing process. Offset Press Screen Printing Press Flexo Press Film Printer CTS System Plate Setter Desktop Printer Proofer Digital Copier 4 In the Commercial Printing, ColorGATE works closely together with the following worldwide operating cooperation s as well as with more than 50 additional manufacturers:
Experts for Industrial Printing Industrial Printing Industrial Printing is different from Commercial Printing in that in Industrial Printing the printing is merely one process in the overall production process that serves to decorate the goods produced. The inkjet process is often used to apply an ink or another liquid to any kind or shape of image carrier, which is then decorated or to which new functions are added. ColorGATE offers solutions for the following application areas: Décor Ceramics Packaging Textiles Glass Wallpaper HPL MDF/HDF Laminate Edging strips for plates, furniture Floor tiles Wall tiles Tile decoration Dishes, Tableware Direct decoration Bottle Can, Tin Tube Container Label Shrink Cardboard box Carton Corrugated Garment Apparel Interior textiles, Homewear Technical textiles Large Format Printer Flatbed Printer Grand Format Printer Cutting Plotter Cutting Table Industrial Inkjet Printer Digital Printer ColorGATE supports a wide range of print head manufacturers, such as: 5
Commercial Printing Solutions Our Color Management technology maximizes the respective color reproduction on any supported output systems considering the individual configuration and settings (media, colors, printing modes, printing file, output and application purpose), by applying the following highlights: Detailed rendition of highlights, mid-tones and shadows Neutral and balanced grey tones in due consideration of the media-related white point Brilliant colors due to accurately saturated full tones Pure and finely graduated color gradients Natural skin tones Exact reproduction of spot colors Best possible processing of design elements, e.g. handling overprint and interpretation of transparencies Digital Printing Large Format Printing The market segment for Digital Printing covers all printing services that are provided on digital printing systems. In addition, we differentiate between Large Format Printing and Small Format Production Printing. Small Format Production Printing 6 As we see it, the Commercial Printing sector comprises all printing services in which the printed product is identical to the end product. In this case, the printing process is the core service provided. As a result, Commercial Printing includes the processes of Digital Printing and Conventional Printing. The difference between these is the different techniques the printing systems use. While Digital Printing uses only digital printing systems, Conventional Printing generally uses analog printing systems. However, digital imaging systems are also used in Conventional Printing to produce digital artwork masters (films, printing plates, stencils, printing blocks). Prepress covers both of these processes. Wide or Large Format Printing (LFP) is the designation for the production of large-format print products with typical printing widths of between approx. 1 m to 5 m on a wide range of different substrates. Typical Products Displays, posters, signs Banners, large pictures, facade cladding Transportation advertising, vehicle advertising Textile and flag printing, soft signage Interior design, wallpaper printing Photos and art prints Small Format Production Printing designates all professionally produced digital print products from job printing to a final format of approximately DIN A3. Typical Products Business cards Letter paper Flyers, brochures
CP Conventional Printing Prepress Conventional Printing is the term used for the conventional printing processes of flexo printing, offset printing, screen printing and gravure printing. Flexo printing Offset printing Screen printing Gravure printing Prepress designates the different processes and procedures used to prepare for printing (data preparation, layout, image processing, color management, trapping etc.) to create digital artwork masters (PDFs) or printing forms (plates, stencils, blocks) for the final digital or conventional printing process. Flexo printing plays a major role in packaging printing. The printing of a large number of non-absorbent substrates with line resolutions of 60 150 lpi and sometimes high dot gain characterize flexo printing. Offset printing is a technique that uses process inks at line resolutions of 150-300 lpi. Offset printing is also often used to produce large print runs. Screen printing generally uses line resolutions of up to 85 lpi. It also usually uses spot colors and a large range of different substrates. In gravure printing, the elements to be reproduced are engraved onto the image carrier using high contact pressure and adhesion force on the paper at high speed and usually in large print runs. Typical Products Labels Continuous and single forms Packaging materials Typical Products Flyers Posters Advertising materials Typical Products Posters, banners Textile advertising Art prints Typical Products Magazines Catalogs Packaging Décor Typical Products Digital proofs (halftone proofs) Digital dot proofs Digital artwork masters, printing forms (films, stencils, plates) Raster data preparation (separated 1-bit data) PDF-X files 7

File Input Job Management Separation Screening Chemical-free film production Separation Screening Proofer Color Measuring - automatic In our company we use both, screen printing and digital printing depending on the application and the number of copies. For us, the challenge is the application of both printing technologies alongside each other. The strengths of one technology are compensating the weaknesses of the other technology. Our customers do not care about this fact. They demand for a high quality final product at best price regardless of the printing process. Very often it is crucial for us, to inform our customers explicitly in advance about what we can do for them and what they can expect from us. CP Printer Driver ColorGATE is one of the worldwide leading developers of printer drivers. Printer drivers are the interface between production computer (operating system, application software) and printers, enabling the control of the printer via the software. The Printer Status Monitor displays in the RIP software all major status messages of the used printing system, if supported. Status messages such as, printer status, media width, ink level, ink usage and information about the heating cycle. Nature and extent of the status messages are based on the functionality of the connected printer. A list of the compatible printer driver www.colorgate.com/en/supported-devices/ printers.html Queue A queue manages the print jobs that shall be passed on to a printing system. Transfer is based on FIFO principal (First In First Out); however, the order of the print jobs can also be altered manually. Using queues, management of print jobs and efficiency of printing systems can be controlled optimally. RIP Process In the RIP process, PostScript, PDF and raster formats are converted into system-specific screen/ raster data for output on printing systems. ColorGATE is one of the world s first suppliers who used RIP software to solve additional major challenges in color management and in raster separation. A further characteristic of the ColorGATE RIP architecture is the parallel processing of multiple RIP instances to scale the processing speed. Job Management Job Management Extensions allow a quick and easy processing of print jobs: Optimized print job processing, splitting of large print jobs, quick production and processing of 1-Bit TIFF files, to avoid procedural errors, etc. Filmgate Module (FGM) The FGM complements ColorGATE RIP software Productionserver 8 with the functional range of the worldwide leading RIP software Filmgate 8 for chemical free film production with inkjet printers for flexo-, offset- and screen printing in high-end quality. Plategate Module (PLGM) The PLGM complements ColorGATE RIP software Productionserver with the functional range of the Plategate and therefore enables computer to plate (CtP) production with inkjet systems, as well as the chemical- and exposure-free plate production for the offset market. 1-Bit-TIFF-Input-Module (1BITM) The 1BITM provides a simple and reliable method for processing incoming 1-bit TIFF-files for creating halftone proofs and de-screening of input data for impositioning proofs. In this way, documents can be verified prior to printing in order to avoid incorrect artwork. The 1BITM is an ideal solution for customers in packaging industry, but also for pre-press workflows in other areas. Computer to Screen Module (CTSM) The CTSM produces high-quality 1-bit TIFF-data in all required resolutions, also considering CTS-application-specific requirements. 33
Container + Applying the container function it is possible to gang several print jobs in the container into one collective job (nesting). Afterwards they can be arranged either optimized for cutting or optimized for material savings. ColorGATE container function clearly exceeds classical nesting functions by offering scores of additional functions that increase effectiveness and handling in daily production. ColorGATE enhanced the range of functions with Container+ and improved the operability at the same time. In-RIP-Trapping Module (TRAPM) TRAPM ensures the elimination of flashes in the print image due to processrelated registration errors in multi-color printing that can occur during the printing process. In order to counter these misalignments, the In-RIP-Trapping Module allows the over-filling or under-filling of adjacent image elements. Optical Disc Decoration Module (ODDM) ODDM simplifies the workflow for printing optical data media. Tiling The Tiling function enables wizard-based or manual segmentation of large print jobs into separate tiles. Overlaps and gaps can be defined per segment. Settings that once have been made can be saved to be applied with future jobs. Color Management Color Management Extensions simplify and improve color management, color and spot color replacement and ensure a consistence and reproducibility at any time color. any Color Profiler Module 3+4 (NPFM4) any Color Profiler Module 3 8 (NPFM8) The NPFM4 and the NPFM7 enable ICC profiling of any color set above and beyond the standard process colors, such as CMYK, with 3 or 4 (NPFM4), or with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 color channels (NPFM8). These profilers were developed for the décor, textile and ceramic printing areas of application. For the optimum support of the entire color-management workflow, automatic preview profiles are also generated in addition to the output profiles that can be used as reference and soft-proof profiles in all design applications, even if these do not support n-color in the first place. Color Atlas Module (CAM) The CAM the quality of a specific replacement color for any input color by printing adjacent color patches that illustrate grouped color gradations of the possible replacement color similar to the concept of a color swatch. By means of the real visualization of the color gradations, now the decision on the replacement color can be taken visually according to the natural color perception. Color Replacement ColorGATE function for color and spot color replacement with direct measurement device integration enables optimal automatic or manual replacement of any input color or color range (RGB, CMYK, spot) with CMYK and L*a*b* colors. Additionally, the gradation behavior of spotcolor can be controlled. Color Server Module (CSM) The CSM enables automatic color space transformation of all supported input file formats (PDF, PS, TIFF etc.), taking into account versatile DeviceLink functions for separation such as: separation maintenance, reduction of ink consumption, black generation and black handling, preservation of pure colors for primary and secondary colors as well as duplex and triplex. 34
CP Device Link Profiler Module (DLPFM) Device link profiles a special version of ICC profiles are used for specific color transformations in the color management workflow to produce most accurate print data. They ensure that quality and color accuracy of a print job in the aspect of matching a reference or a standard are improved significantly. This profile creation tool is wizard based and allows an iterative approach to reach the optimal result. Part of Profiler Suite Express Profiler Module (EPFM) Using EPFM users will be able to create new ICC profiles that are based on existing profiles fast and easy for printing devices in production workflow. This is the best way if e.g. new material has only minor differences compared to older material. In this manner creation of new ICC profiles will be accelerated significantly. Part of Profiler Suite G7 Calibration Module (G7CM) To create calibrations according to the corresponding specifications of the IDEAlliance for G7, the authoritative standard for color production in North America, with the ColorGATE RIP and profiling solutions Productionserver and Proofgate. The integrated recalibration option makes it possible to return at any time to a reference output quality, even when using ICC-based color management. Gamut Viewer The Gamut Viewer enables meaningful two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) comparisons of different color spaces. A further feature is the option to illustrate the containing colors of a print job as a 3D point cloud within the selected profile gamut. This procedure visualizes which color areas of a job are within or outside of the color space. Linearization Assistant The main task of the spectral value based linearization assistant (wizard) is to create printer- and media-specific linearizations with the aim that all print system employed primary and process colors behave linear or equally in all steps over the gradation from 0% to 100%. This linearity of the process color gradation fulfills an optimal pre-condition for a printing system to be profiled at its best. Media and Light Profiler Module (MLPFM) The MLPFM allows a straightforward adaption of existing ICC profiles to changes in the media coloration or the illuminant. The adaption can be achieved without a time-consuming new profiling. Thus, it is possible to consider various media colorations or specific illuminants without any loss of time, which is especially important in industrial printing environments. Furthermore, the MLPFM enables the adjustment of a profile in terms of the used illuminant. Illuminants beyond D50 (daylight standard), such as D55, D65, Illuminant A and Tungsten are also eligible. Media Device Synchronization (MDS) With the innovative recalibration technology MDS a printer can be reverted to a reference state. In addition, MDS allows fine adjustment of identical printers in the event of system- or environment-related deviations. Beyond that, multiple identical systems can be matching each other in a way that identical results can be achieved when printing on the same substrate. Fine adjustment is based on an ICC-profile, for consistent color results at any time. Multichannel PSD Module (MPSDM) MPSDM enables to process multichannel files (e.g. native Photoshop files PSD, PSB) via a sophisticated processing workflow. MPSDM is especially suitable for textile or ceramics printing as well as other printing applications with special color handling requirements, which are beyond typical process color combinations. Moreover, MSPDM enables a complete ICC color management for files using 3 to 8 channels. Custom ICC profiles can be applied in the correct color mode with the designated multichannel inkset to ensure a color accurate output. 35
Multicolor Profiler Module (MCPFM) MCPFM enables assistant-guided creation of ICC profiles which support additional color channels like CMYK O(range)/G(reen) or CMYK R(ed)/B(lue). Notice: Profiler PFM is required. Part of Profiler Suite Optical Disc Decoration Profiler Module (ODDPFM) ODDPFM simplifies creation of ICC profiles for printing optical data media. The module is compatible with the Eye-One io spectrophotometer for fully automated measurements. Photo FineArt Module (PHFM) The PHFM includes numerous functions to process digital photographs and FineArt prints, such as 16-bit rendering for the output of photo and art prints as well as FineArt reproductions in highest quality. Functions to generate neutral grayscale images, individual effect shading and color adjustment to compensate for ambient light for an optimal FineArt presentation despite specific lighting conditions. Additional functions to define cut marks and frame thickness for canvas frame production and automatic scaling to the frame size selected. Profiler Module (PFM) PFM enables comfortable, assistant-guided creation of professional ICC profiles. Supported targets based on measurement device selection and print mode: ColorGATE CMYK and RGB, ECI2002, IT8-7.3, IT8-7.4. Comprehensive function to ensure appropriate settings for black generation (GCR, UCR, Black Start, Black Width), black point (Black Point mode, Black Max, Total Ink) and neutral or color boost gamut mapping. Part of Profiler Suite Profiler Suite (PFS) The Profiler Suite bundles the six powerful modules Profiler (PFM), Multicolor Profiler (MCPFM), DeviceLink Profiler (DLPFM), Express Profiler (EPFM), Reference Profiler (RPFM) and TVI Calibration Module (TVICM) into one complete package at an attractive price, enabling highly professional color management. Proof Standard Digital Module (PSDM) The PSDM enables legally binding digital proofing according to such international color standards as ISO 12647 as well as FOGRA 3 reference values. It also includes a control wedge evaluation according to ProcessStandard Digital Printing (PSD). Quality Assurance Module (QAM) The QAM is a fully integrated quality assurance system for the digital imaging market, which allows control, documentation and archiving the consistency of color. A simple traffic light symbol (green, yellow, red) clearly indicates the quality of state. In combination with the MDS recalibration technology QAM becomes a really powerful quality assurance tool. Reference Profiler Module (RPFM) RPFM enables the creation of ICC profiles and simulation of the color range for output devices, which cannot be controlled directly by ColorGATE RIP software. Profiles can be used in Color Server or in external software. Part of Profiler Suite Repro Proof Module (RPM) The RPM, formerly Screen Print Proof Module SPPM, enables color and screen/ dot-accurate digital proofs with appropriate inkjet printers that simulate the print results of screen printing machines. As a result, it is possible to control print results before printing and to use the proof as an approval tool. RPM s uniqueness is ability to reproduce accurate colors and screened dots at the same time. TVI Calibration Module (TVICM) The TVICM complements the existing color management tool sets with tonal value correction (TVI), well known from the ISO 12647-2 used in offset printing. Analog to the offset printing standard, compliant print results can be achieved by using dot gain correction, standard ink and matching a paper specific TVI target. TVICM offers the possibility to calibrate conventional printing presses in heterogeneous production environments via tonal value correction. Part of Profiler Suite 36
CP Workflow Management Workflow Management Extensions simplify production workflows or provide a transparent overview of the costs for print jobs. Access Control Module (ACM) ACM allows the easy creation of editing rights for individual users or user groups, restricting the access to particular functions or whole function sets (tabs). This ensures that only privileged users are able to change settings, for instance in Color Management. The list of restrictable features contains all essential RIP Software functions, which can be linked individually or as a complete set of functions (tabs) with respective access rights. Furthermore, it is possible to assign different user rolls with specific access rights, e.g. administrator, operator or color expert. These user rolls can be assigned to respective users or user groups, in order to preserve the clarity of the rights management. Additionally, the access to the entire RIP Software can be restricted via password protection. Print & Cut Module (PCM) The PCM is the optimal solution for cutting, routing and finishing materials like wood, plastic, synthetics, leather and textile. PCM enables an efficient contour cutting and a precise finishing from POP displays to industrial applications. Trim Nesting Module (TNM) The TNM manages the automatic placement of various print jobs on the printable area and adds synchronization marks for automatic roll cutters (e.g: Flexa, Fotoba etc.) to trim and finish the prints. Cost Calculation Module (CCM) The CCM enables a precise calculation of job-related consumption of ink before printing, also considering material and additional costs. Reports can be generated (HTML/CSV), which provide a transparent overview of costs and simplifies the quotation process. Additionally, consumption reports per specific printer or per a defined period can be obtained. JDF Interface Module (JDFM) The JDF (Job Definition Format) interface is based on the XML markup language according to industrial standards for direct data exchange in workflow systems. In this way, job parameters can be controlled by external systems and deliver important information on production progress. 37

IP Experts for Industrial Printing Industrial Printing Industrial Printing is different from Commercial Printing in that in Industrial Printing the printing is merely one process in the overall production process that serves to decorate the goods produced. The inkjet process is often used to apply an ink or another liquid to any kind or shape of image carrier, which is then decorated or to which new functions are added. The advantages include the small production lots right down to the batch size of 1 as well as the option of changing décor or print image without having to retrofit or convert the printing systems. Customized products and packaging can be produced for specific target groups with no increase in costs. In addition, the process reduces the need for inventory and the number of rejects, which translates as a further decrease in costs and makes a positive contribution to the company s environmental balance. The adaption can be achieved without a timeconsuming new profiling Thus, it is possible to consider various media colorations or specific illuminants without any loss of time, which is especially important in industrial printing environments. 46 * This is achieved through the use of special DeviceLink profiles designed to optimize the color composition, whereby the CMY share in the image is reduced and replaced with a higher proportion of black.
IP Workflow Management Furthermore, the MLPFM enables the adjustment of a profile in terms of the used illuminant. Illuminants beyond D50 (daylight standard), such as D55, D65, Illuminant A and Tungsten. Proof Standard Digital Module (PSDM) The PSDM enables legally binding digital proofing according to such international color standards as ISO 12647 as well as FOGRA 3 reference values. It also includes a control wedge evaluation according to Process Standard Digital Printing (PSD). Furthermore, All available modules can be found on pages 32 37. Software Maintenance it is possible to assign different user rolls with specific access rights, e.g. administrator, operator or color expert. These user rolls can be assigned to respective users or user groups, in order to preserve the clarity of the rights management. Additionally, the access to the entire RIP Software can be restricted via password protection. JDF Interface Module (JDFM) The JDF (Job Definition Format) interface is based on the XML markup language according to industrial standards for direct data exchange in workflow systems. In this way, job parameters can be controlled by external systems and deliver important information on production progress. In the past 15 years we have developed more than 1,000 different drivers for digital printers. We are familiar with all print head technologies and many application requirements. By this means, we have been able to transfer proven color management strategies successfully from digital File Input Webgate Color Management Profiling of nonstandard color systems Optimizationof spot and special colors Printing system recalibration commercial printing to industrial printing such as the control of the ink amount, linearization, ICC profiling and calibration. The principles remain the same, but now they are integrated into our new, intelligent printer driver environment in terms of automation, cost efficiency and productivity. Proofer Color Measuring - automatic Color Measuring - manual We would like to use the potential of the industrial inkjet technology for decor printing. The flexibility of the latest print head technology is outstanding. Thanks to the grayscale method, even resolution meets our requirements. Productivity now has reached a passable level by the single-pass configuration of the print heads. But our main problem is color control. Some images look right at first shot. Others need to be tweaked manually by time-consuming image editing. Following a trial-and-error approach, we get closer to the desired result but this process is very slow. Often this eats up the time advantage that digital production should give us. Therefore we are looking for solutions that enable us to produce efficiently and reliably in multi-shift operation, and to operate digital production systems in a standardized manner at all of our production plants.
