My name is Rena Hanaway and my purpose in sending this letter is to welcome you to and to open the door to my virtual space. As you journey through, I hope to provide you with opportunities: to discover emerging technologies that are practical for you to experience blogging and learning through social participation to develop your personal learning environment to interact within a community of practice The following pages will give you an overview of the course as well as specific contact information you will need. Read over the documents thoroughly. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns; my door is always open. I would like to extend a special welcome and introduction to our EMDT Certificate Students. You are beginning the first month of your four month journey in and we are excited to have you with us this month. I would like to introduce you to your cohort for the month in the first Live Session on Tuesday evening. Each course director has his or her own style and methods of presenting and gathering information. One of the biggest differences in is that most of your assignments will be posted to either your blog, which you will create in week one, or your Capstone Project Website. Read over this entire document and the first week s assignments before the first Live Session session, so we can clarify any questions you may have. Please know that you can contact me on Skype or ichat or via email at anytime. My contact information is below and on the syllabus. I will respond to emails within 24 hours and will be happy to schedule appointments in the evening if my regular office hours do not match your schedule. As an EMDT graduate, I understand how exciting and challenging each month can be. I look forward to sharing ideas and the new learning experiences that will come from working with you this month! Sincerely, Rena J Hanaway

Please pay special attention to both assignments and announcements that are specific to one or the other. The main differences are in the Capstone Project assignments. Make sure you are completing the correct assignment or reading an announcement that pertains to you. Gear Up for Live Sessions! What s a Live Session you ask? Well, the time has finally come for us to bid Wimba a happy farewell (woohoo!) and move our weekly class meetings to a more stable, feature-filled platform. This month we are excited to meet with you in the GoToTraining platform. Similar to Wimba, we will meet in an online environment for synchronous lecture, discussion and activities. When are Live Sessions? All Live Sessions are on Tuesday evenings at 8:00PM EST Still not sure what synchronous learning means? Get a more detailed explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/synchronous_learning The procedure for joining a GoToTraining is slightly different than accessing a Wimba room. Each week we will post and email you a link to register for the session. Once you register, you will be provided a link to join the session. If it s your first time using the GoToTraining platform, you will be prompted to download and install their software. Please note that if you attempt to access the session prior to the Course Director opening it, you will see a message that looks like the one below. If you receive this message, just hold tight until the Course Director launches the session. Certificate Students ONLY We will have an Introductory Live Session on Tuesday of Week 1 at 7:00PM EST to go over specific information for Certificate students and how your journey will differ from the program students.

Degree Connection Emergent Technologies in a Collaborative Culture allows students to create a presence and become immersed in the digital world. This course also opens doors for creating a personal digital learning space, inviting an atmosphere for lifelong learning. Information regarding APA from MLR, brain- based learning from MLT, and presentation aptitude are ideas and skills which are revisited and built upon this month. Google Docs will be used extensively for collaboration in EDE. Watching video tutorials that explore applications used in upcoming months, students may augment their understanding of courses to come. Students also continue work on the certiqicate or program s Capstone project. Industry Connection In the early days of the World Wide Web, media was produced by a relatively small number of sources and served out to the masses. The advent of Web 2.0 changed all of this. With Web 2.0, the Internet turned from a one- way stream of information to a two- way give- and- take between the individual and the vast of connected users. The result of this change is the emergence of a participatory culture in which the individual can become the author, producer, and broadcaster of media. The information and tools explored in this course will serve students in almost any industry where teaching and learning exists with the latest technological tools. RESEARCH COMPONENT In, students will gain insight into the world of emerging technologies through researching tools for their particular environment. Students will explore their speciqic Capstone Project Research topic by using EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and the Web in general to Qind a variety of tools. They are encouraged to connect with experts in their Qields as they network using blogs and other social networking tools. As students continue to develop the Capstone Project, they will write and post their Qirst drafts and action plans.

Additional Resources Google In we will be using several Google applications including Google Docs, Forms, Spreadsheets and Google Reader. Lynda.com We will be using Lynda.com to complete trainings and explore the power behind online training videos. Educator Studio Educator Studio is a Community of Practice we are building as a place to freely exchange ideas, scenarios, blog posts, discussions and more. EMDT Facebook Page The EMDT Facebook page is a resource for connecting with EMDT grads who are program coaches, course coaches, and software experts. Strategies for Successful Learning Some tips to keep in mind for Emergent Technologies in a Collaborative Culture: Communication is one of the most important aspects of this course and the program. Make sure you are interacting with your peers and instructors. My contact information is in the announcements section on the FSO dashboard. Each student brings a different perspective, a different way of processing information, and a different foundation of knowledge. Remember that the focus is learning. What you do with the speciqics of each assignment will determine what you learn from it. Read through each document entirely before beginning each assignment and ask questions if you need clariqication. Connect assignments with your practice or with your Capstone Project whenever you can in order to make the learning as practical as possible. These connections and practical applications will allow for meaningful learning to take place. If you are unable to attend a live Live Session session, be sure to watch the archived session within one week this is a mandatory part of. If you need help with embedding functional links in your blog, ask for help well before the deadline. Understand your Global Professionalism Standards (GPS) rubric. Ask questions, share ideas, and build your community.

BLOGGING RILS Students will create and publish reviews of emerging technologies from their own unique perspective. They will write reviews for an online audience, interact with each other through comments, post learning reflections, and upload media files as they develop their writing voices published for a real world audience. Students will plan, implement and publish a Relevant and Innovative Learning Scenario and interact within an EMDT/Full Sail Community of Practice. These assignments will connect with the student s professional environment or with the student s capstone project. VIDEO CAPSTONE PROJECT Students will create short videos as an exercise in synthesizing information gathered through research into a clear and concise message for a particular audience. The assignments will also increase student experience and skills with imovie, which will be used later in the program. In addition, through publishing the finished products to YouTube and embedding, students will increase their skills in uploading media to a variety of formats. Students will be reading and writing in conjunction with the Capstone Project assignments. They will also read current articles from professional journals, blogs published by leading experts, or websites housing the latest in emergent technologies and learning theory. Program Students will finish writing the first draft of the literature review and submit it for peer critiques. Certificate Students will create, tweak, and publish their Action Plan.

GRADING POLICY GRADE WEIGHTS You are responsible for knowing all content, assignments, deadlines, and policies from the Full Sail Student Handbook, the syllabus, and any information on Full Sail Online (FSO). This includes using the Full Sail Online system and your Macintosh computer. You must use your FSO email account and monitor it for any announcements every day. Please remember that, although technical challenges sometimes occur, it is your responsibility to ensure that all assignments are completed and submitted within the timeframes allotted. We recommend that you allow extra time for any unforeseen circumstances. Capstone Project 20% Blogging 35% RILS 20% Videos 10% GPS 10% Discussion Board 5% Total 100% Back-up Copies of Your Work You should keep a backup copy of all your work off your laptop hard drive Apple Time Machine or Backup are very suitable backup applications. If an assignment is not received for any technical reason on FSO; or at any other assigned destination you need it will not be accepted unless you have contacted fsosupport. It is not acceptable to upload a placeholder as a substitute for a required assignment. If you experience a technical challenge with the Full Sail Online system specifically, you must report this situation to FSO Support immediately and provide the support ticket number to your course director. Deadline extensions will be granted only for documented Full Sail technical issues with a ticket number, provided no later than the date the assignment is due. Not being aware of something is not a legitimate reason for an extension on an assignment. Please contact me directly and immediately to discuss any extenuating circumstances. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY COPYRIGHT LAWS REPEATING STUDENTS Intellectual property protection is a professional standard of Full Sail Master s level programs. Therefore plagiarism and academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. A failing grade will be awarded for this course for any type of cheating or using others works as your own. Such occurrences will also result in referral to Full Sail administration, which could result in academic dismissal from the degree program. Any student work may be subject to examination by antiplagiarism tools or services. It is imperative that you abide by strict copyright laws and not use any audio, visual or multi-media content that is copyright protected without personal permission. This far surpasses not following a guideline or procedure, this is in fact breaking a law. If you are repeating a class, any duplicate work that was previously submitted will not be accepted. When repeating a course, you must produce new and original work. In, you can continue to add to the blog you originally created; however, you must contact me about reworking, revising, or completing alternative assignments prior to all deadlines. Please contact me if you have questions.

GRADUATION (Upon successful completion of each phase in the process) PRESENTATION (Based on entire process illustrated on CP Website) CONCLUSIONS (Based on research from literature review, the development of media and phases and implementation) Program Students Only Successful completion of the literature review will ensure your success at each phase of your Capstone Project. Your literature review is your anchor. IMPLEMENTATION (Based on research from literature review and the development of media and phases) MEDIA AND PHASE DEVELOPMENT (Based on research from Literature Review) LITERATURE REVIEW CAPSTONE PROJECT WEBSITE IMMEDIATE RESCHEDULE FOR PROGRAM STUDENTS Within the EMDT Program there are certain milestones that must be reached in order for you to move forward. TMD - your month 4 course - is the first Immediate Reschedule course because it includes one of these milestones - the final draft of your Literature Review (LR). This means that your literature review must be completed and approved for you to continue moving forward. This procedure is in place to ensure your success in upcoming courses. If you look at the pyramid above you see that the literature review is the basis for assignments you will be required to complete over the next several months. These assignments are dependent upon this successful completion of your LR. The completed LR is worth 30% of your overall grade in TMD - 25% for the paper and 5% GPS as you correspond with the AR Advisor to ensure all aspects are approved. This is a pass/fail component for this month - your LR must be approved in order to pass TMD. Take Charge - Use all your Resources - Ask for Help - Set yourself up for SUCCESS.
