Features The General Communications/Aural Protective System III(GenCAPS III) headset helps to protect the wearer from hearing loss. It can be donned and doffed while a helmet is worn. The headset provides the following: One size; easy to fit to the head Flex-boom microphone; split-signal earphones; two upper cord styles Electronic hearing of ambient sounds with volume control Amplifies low-level noise and limits ambient sounds to a maximum of 82 db(a). (The signal is also automatically reduced when a signal comes in through the radio line.) Automatic shutoff to save battery life Compatible with a variety of helmets including the Gentex Tactical Ballistic Helmet (TBH), Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH), Marine Lightweight Helmet (LWH), Special Operations Headset Adaptable Helmet (SOHAH), Personnel Protective Armor System Ground Troops (PASGT), and others The GenCAPS III headset (Figure 1) has either a coiled upper cord or an upper cord with a push-to-talk (PTT) switch. The headset with the coiled upper cord is dual radio-compatible and is available with the following microphone styles:* Part number 07D12658-1: 150-ohm flex boom microphone Part number 07D12658-2: 5-ohm flex boom microphone The headset with the PTT-switch upper cord has a 150-ohm flex boom microphone and is compatible with various intercom systems as follows: Part number 07D12658-3: compatible with VIS (VIC-3) Part number 07D12658-4: compatible with LVIS Part number 07D12658-5: compatible with VIC-1 and VIC-2 This booklet describes the donning, operation, and care of the GenCAPS headset. * NOTE: The coiled upper cord requires a lower cord with a PTT switch and appropriate radio connector or intercom adapter. Installing the Batteries CAUTION Do not install or change the batteries with the power on. Battery compartment (both sides of headset) 1. Referring to Figure 3, remove the cover from the battery compartment on one side of the headset. 2. Place a AA-size battery into the compartment, checking for correct polarity. 3. Replace the cover securely on the battery compartment. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 for the battery compartment on the other side of the headset. Donning the Headset Referring to Figure 4, do the following: 1. Don the helmet. 2. Fasten and adjust the helmet chin strap for a snug, secure fit. 3. Grasp the headset earcups. From behind the head, position the earcups over the ears, flexing the headset just enough to clear the head. 4. Fasten the headset headband straps at the top of the helmet for snug fit. 5. Operating the Control Buttons 1. To turn the headset talk-through circuit on or off, press and release both buttons (Figure 5) at the same time. You will hear a beep in the earphones. Forward button Rear button 2. To increase volume, press the forward button. 3. To decrease volume, press the rear button. Figure 5. Headset Functions The most recent volume settings are saved when the headset is shut off. The headset shuts off automatically after two hours if no functions are activated. The headset beeps twice to indicate that it will switch off after one minute if no functions are activated. The headset beeps three times every 30 seconds for five minutes when the battery power is low. Then the headset will shut off automatically. The batteries last approximately 250 hours. Cleaning and Care Clean the headset with a clean cloth dampened with a warm soap-and-water solution. Do not immerse the headset in water. Inspect the earseals regularly to ensure that they have no cracks, which can lead to sound leakage. Do not store the headset in an area prone to excessive heat (for example, near a windshield or a window). Remove the batteries before you store the headset. 5
