Anatomy of a Headset Bearing If you have the headset bearings available take a close look at them. Almost all cartridge-type bearings are labelled in some way, and most of the time these labels contain useful information that can help to positively identify the type of headset required. Steerer Tube Diameter Inside Chamfer Brand CANE CREEK 1-1/8 36 x.hss20130k Part Number Outside Chamfer Note: Bearings from different manufacturers may be interchangeable 3

Step 1: Identify Platform Traditional Traditional Headsets Bearings sit outside of the head-tube in pressedin cups This style is the most common, especially on older or more traditional bikes Semi-Integrated (ZeroStack ) Semi-Integrated Headsets Bearings sit inside the head-tube in pressed-in, recessed cups Head-tubes have a larger diameter than integrated and traditional platforms Also known as ZeroStack Head-tubes for 1-1/8 typically have an outside diameter of 50mm, 1-1/2 head-tubes are often 62mm. Integrated Integrated Headsets Bearings sit inside a specially designed headtube with integral bearings seats There are no pressed in cups, however some designs utilize removable bearing seat chamfers that resemble small angled rings Carbon fiber and titanium frames often use bonded-in aluminum inserts that cannot be removed from the frame. This should not be confused with a semi-integrated design. 4

Step 2: Identify Head-Tube Interface Traditional Headsets Professional JIS 30.05-30.10mm 29.85-29.90mm 33.90-33.95mm 36.90-36.95mm 49.57-49.61mm Professional JIS 30.20-30.30mm 30.00-30.10mm 34.05-34.15mm 37.05-37.15mm 49.70-49.75mm 5

Semi-Integrated / ZeroStack Headsets 41.35-41.40mm 43.95-44.00mm 55.95-55.90mm 41.45-41.50mm 44.05-44.10mm 55.99-56.04mm 6

Integrated Headsets Basic Steps to Integrated Head-Tube Identification: 1. Measure bearing bore diameter 2. 3. Measure upper and lower bearing depth Determine bearing seat chamfer angle Head-Tube Outside Diameter Bearing-Bore Diameter Upper Bearing Depth Bearing Seat Chamfer Lower Bearing Depth 7

Integrated Headsets Top Assembly 38.15-38.25mm 41.1-41.2mm Italian 41.95-42.05mm 41.6-41.7mm ICBM 44.9-45.0mm 3.2-3.1mm 3.2-3.1mm Italian 3.0-2.8mm 6.8-6.6mm ICBM 2.1-1.9mm 1.6 mm Italian ICBM 36 8

Integrated Headsets Bottom Assembly Italian ICBM 7.0-6.9mm 36 7.0-6.9mm Italian 6.8-6.6mm 7.5-7.3mm 6.5-6.3mm ICBM 5 mm 7.5-7.3mm 7.0-6.9mm 7.5-7.3mm 38.15-38.25mm 41.1-41.2mm Italian 41.95-42.05mm 41.6-41.7mm ICBM 44.9-45.0mm 47.0-47.1mm 49.1-49.2mm 52.05-52.15mm 9

Integrated Headsets Non-Standard Assemblies There are many integrated headsets that use some variation of the aforementioned standards. These variations often include: Split, slip-in rings that form the bearing seat rather than machining the seat into the head-tube Additional bearing seat depth to facilitate the use of different seal mechanisms Completely proprietary bearings If you encounter such a unique bearing system it is best to contact the frame manufacturer to determine the appropriate replacement. 10

Step 3: Identify Fork Interface Constant-Diameter Steerer Tubes 25.35-25.4mm 28.45-28.6mm 31.60-31.75mm 38.074-38.202mm Professional JIS 26.43-26.49mm 27.03-27.09mm 30.015-30.075mm 33.03-33.09mm 39.79-39.85mm Tapered Steerer Tubes Tapered steerers most often utilize standard sizes and configurations listed above Upper assemblies are most often 1-1/8 but some 1 uppers have been made Lower assemblies may conform to 1-1/4, 1-3/8, or 1-1/2 standards but many manufacturers use proprietary assemblies which makes identification and replacement more difficult. 11

Traditional Crown-Race Professional JIS 26.35-26.40mm 26.95-27.00mm 29.93-29.98mm 32.95-33.00mm 39.71-39.76mm Integrated Crown-Race Some forks have bearing chamfers molded into the fork crown itself, these forks do not use a traditional pressed-on crown race. These forks are inteded for use with Integrated headtubes and headsets and are usually constructed of carbon fiber. Many forks with integrated crown races are proprietary designs, however some are designed to work with one of the existing integrated standard headsets. To identify the required headset it is necessary to know the steerer-tube diameter and bearing seat chamfer angle. 36 or Forks with 36 chamfers are likely to be Cane Creek IS compatible Forks with chamfers could be Campagnolo Hiddenset compatible but are equally likely to be proprietary designs It is best to use the head-tube to identify the correct integrated standard 12
