3 Description of the machine Coil Pac 240 und Coil Pac 400 are two types of automatic ring coiling and packaging machines. With these machines, round and flat insulated wires can be coiled. The coil is packed with an environmental friendly shrink foil made of polyethylen plastics. An advantage of the COIL PAC machine is that the coil does not need to be strapped with plastic straps. Strapping is expensive and needs extra service and attention. The inner and outer diameter of the coil are normally fixed to suit a certain size of pallet, but can as an option also be variable within a certain range. The height of the coil and the cable layer arm are automatically adjusted. The operator has to preset only the cable diameter and the desired length. COIL PAC 400 can be placed directly in an extrusion line or in a rewinding line with dancer control and driven pay off. Smaller cables like insulated flexible and solid conductors can be taken from a flyer pay off machine with tension brake. Page 2

5 Description of the coiling process: The cable is led into the COIL PAC machine via guide rollers. The cable passes a length measuring unit and a small feeder caterpillar. This caterpillar moves the cable end into and through the traversing layer arm towards the coil barrel. The layer arm is a special tube with an integrated air jet stream to forward the cable end through the tube and to the point where the cable end is clamped between the winding barrel and the upper flange. The caterpillar is disengaged at the same moment the cable is clamped and the winding process is started. When the coil is finished, the coil-center core barrel is automatically moved downwards and two gripper arms are embracing the coil. The cable is cut and the cable end is coiled and positioned in such a way that the cable end is placed under the gripping arm. There it is fixed under full control also during the movement to the foil cover station. An upper and a lower roll with PE-foil are placed in the machine. The foil is pulled from the foil rolls in such a way that a pocket is formed in which the gripper arms are inserting the cable coil. The gripper arms are keeping the coil embraced until the coil is safely covered by the foil, cut and welded. The start for the next coil pocket is welded at the same time. From here, the coil, surrounded by the PE-foil is moved through the shrink oven and the foil is shrunk tightly around the coil. Label Printer Station As an option the COIL PAC machine can be equipped with a label printer. With this printer, lables of various sizes can be printed. Various data and bar-codes can be programmed. The printer is delivered with a PC. The software is operating under Windows 95. At each coil-change, a lable is printed. Text and inputs as cable types, cable length, cable diameter, operators name a.s.o. can be choosen by the customer. The lables are attached either by hand or automatically. Page 4

6 Operating alternatives of the COIL PAC machine The COIL PAC Machine can be placed directly in an extrusion line or in a rewinding process. The rewinding line consists of various sizes of driven pay off stands and control accumulators. Various types of measuring and control equipment can be integrated into the line. The pay off stand is equipped with reel drive, additional mechanical quick stop brake for reel rotation, hydraulically operated reel lifting table, Pneumatical system for opening and closing of the pintles. The Accumulator consists of the stationary sheave assembly and the movable sheave assembly, frame work and sheave positioning system. The total accumulating capacity is appr. 100 m. Positioning of the movable sheave group with belt and belt wheel assembly via an AC- Servomotor. Contactless counting system along the steel frame for monitoring the actual accumulator sheave position. To ensure low tension and controlled handling of the wire to the point of coiling, the stationary sheave assembly is equipped with two support drives. The accumulator is complete with deflection sheaves inbetween pay off and accumulator as well as sheave guidance at the outlet side. All drives in AC-technology, drives for reel and accumulator sheave unit with digital frequency converter. Adjustment of pay off speed and pay off tension via potentiometer. Page 5

8 DESCRIPTION OF AUTOMATIC PALLETISING SYSTEMS Portal Robot The cable coil, packed in shrink foil is leaving the shrink foil oven and conveyed to the Robot pick up position. An automatic cable coil picker collects one after one cable coil and staples them onto each other on a pallet (1200x800) resting on a lifting table. When desired amount of coils is stapled on each other, (for instance a layer of 7 coils or a maximum height of 1100 mm) the stack of coils is automatically transported to a Stretch Film Wrapping Station. Stretch Film Wrapping Station The full palette is automatically forwarded to a turntable and the operators has to attach the stretch film manually to the pallet. The operator starts the wrapping cyclus until the pre-set number of turns has been reached. The foil is automatically cut and the pallet is automatically discharged from the turntable on to a conveyor ready to be picked up by a fork lift. Pallet Accumulator A vertical pallet Accumulator for 15 pc palettes (1200x800). This Accumulator ensures a continuos automatic operation after the coiling process. When the Robot has filled up a palette the full pallet is discharged from the lifting table and the pallet accumulator releases one pallet. A driven conveyor is positioning the new empty pallet on the lifting table. The lifting table is moved upwards and the Robot start a new fill up cycle. Page 7
