Combustion Quality is essential

When combustion quality is essential SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles have been developed for the special needs of surface burners: Luminous gas infrared heaters use ceramic tiles as their burner surface and radiating source. The heat transmission through infrared radiation takes place on the orange glowing ceramic surface. The everyday temperature of these tiles used in millions of modern heating appliances is depending on the application up to 1.200 C. The outstanding temperature resistance and durability is a key strength of SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles. Up to 22 ceramic tiles have been placed without gaskets in one row to create a Gas-Air-Mixture Ceramic Tile Infrared radiation surface. This requires outstanding quality. SCHWANK tiles are rugged: Heating steel mills, foundries, factories, outdoors or churches, in Europe, Siberia or North America SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles have been proven to work in the toughest environment consistently. SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles - A Quality Product from SCHWANK The name SCHWANK is known worldwide in the technology of gas infrared burners for heating or process applications. The development, manufacturing and application of ceramic burners has a long tradition gas-air-mixture Ceramic tile in infrared-gas-heaterceramic tile in radiant tube heater ignition- and ionisation electrode ceramic tile with SCHWANK, since 1936 the founder Günther Schwank had built his first infrared burner with a ceramic tile. The manufacturing of ceramic tiles and their application in many different burners are key abilities of SCHWANK. Today s owner and president is only unsure when asked about the longevity of SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles: I still do not know how long our ceramic tiles last, we have only been making them for 50 years (Prof. Bernd H. Schwank). SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles in Application SCHWANK offers Ceramic Tiles for different specification, different burner applications and gases (from natural to special gases). The most popular applications are Infrared Gas Heaters for Industrial and Commercial Applications Burners for Boilers and Instantaneous Hot-Water Heaters Burners for Industrial Processes Burners for Cookers and Grills Different Burners for Out-

door Heating, Camping, Barbecue etc. Standard products include complete Ceramic Burners with injector and premix-systems as well as Ceramic Surfaces mounted in metallic frames the optimised solution for condensing furnaces. From Standard Products to Specific Applications manufactured in Cologne, Germany, under a very strict constant quality control. In order to fulfil the most sophisticated demands SCHWANK offers a wide range of Standard Ceramics, which vary in: Dimensions Shape Perforation Surface Structure Material Composition Dimensions At the time of printing SCHWANK offers a maximum size of 160 x 160 mm. Within this size all dimensions are possible. Using a certain number of Ceramic Tiles large burner surfaces can be realised. It is also possible to build cylindrical Ceramic Burners out of segments. manufactured in different dimensions with a precision of + 0,1 mm. Perforation and Surface Structure For the design of Perforation and the Surface Structure of the Ceramic Tiles the performance of the tile is laid out. Characteristics such as combustion, flame stability for different gases, heat transfer of the flame etc. are defined. The user can choose hole sizes from 1 mm and higher and a variety of negative and positive surface structures. For special applications individual solutions can be developed. Material Composition The standard product range of SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles has two different recipes. SCHWANK Original SCHWANK Ultra Both materials differ in mechanical stability and maximum surface temperature as well as in the porosity that defines the insulation characteristics between the combustion surface and mixing chamber. SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles in Action the ideal solution for different combustion processes. The gasair mixture enters into a defined perforation of the tile and is equally distributed into the combustion zone. The combustion reaction takes place either 2 mm below the ceramic surfaces in the many thousand of holes or when required above the ceramic surface. Because of the evenly high temperature of the ceramic surface ideal conditions for a complete, clean and efficient combustion are created. Through the sizing of the holes and their emplacement noises can be suppressed avoiding any acoustic nuisance.

Low emission combustion Clean combustion means reduced pollution. Because of the combustion close to the ceramic surface a considerable amount of the combustion heat is absorbed by the ceramic. The flame temperature is therefore greatly reduced permitting an extremely low emission of NOx. Depending on the design of the ceramic surface it will radiate this heat where it is needed such as goods to be heated or the heat exchanger. Because of the pre-mix system and the lower flame temperature the creation of NOx (thermotic as instantaneous) is almost completely suppressed. The application of SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles as a surface burner means an environmentally friendly and long lasting burner system. In an infrared gas heater it is required to create a large radiating surface with a high temperature. In an instantaneous hot-water heater it is required that a compact burner transfers heat into the smallest possible heat exchanger. In a gas fired low intensity infrared heater (tube heater) the longest possible flame has to be created within the tube. All these requirements can be realised with a SCHWANK Ceramic Tile. In different burners with SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles the input varies between 10 and 250 W/cm² as a surface burner and 2.000 W/cm² as a long flame burner. When operated with a lower input and low excess air the Ceramic Tile has the function as an infrared radiant generator. At higher inputs with excess air the Ceramic Tile is used as a flame stabilizer. The high range of inputs permits the SCHWANK Ceramic Tile a high concentration of energy and therefore allows the engineer to build a compact and inexpensive heat generator. Particularly in modulating wall hung water heaters or condensing furnaces the ceramic burner surfaces are the most economical solution. Heat Stability and Longevity Other surface burners use materials and compounds that may offer a questionable longevity. the ideal solution for this kind of application. Thermal, corrosive, chemical or mechanical stress will not change the ceramic. The high quality consistency based on a precise manufacturing technology assures continuous performance and a long life span of the burner. Ceramic Tiles are mechanically solid and do not crumble. They are easy to clean. They will not emit particles or any other emissions. Quality Assurance The underlying features of the manufacturing process of a constant quality assurance

starting at the choice of the raw material, the mixture of the different components, the shaping and the baking of the tiles up to the final lamination. SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles represent the highest quality requirements. The finished product is consistently monitored through different methods and checked on tolerances, temperature resistance, expansion, pressure-loss, surface temperature etc. manufactured exclusively out of natural components. They contain no pollutant and are fully recyclable. In use SCHWANK Ceramic Tiles do not emit any dust or any other emissions of particles. Research Development Service SCHWANK offers a broad number of ceramic burners and tiles. The key know-how of SCHWANK is the application of ceramic burners in different heat emitters and manufacturing of these ceramics. Development of Ceramic Burners Assembly and Sealing of Ceramic Tiles Combustion Technology Influences between burner, premix, ignition and control and heat exchanger Noise suppression The above are a few of the points for which you could request our Technical Support. In general the best solutions and results are obtained when from the beginning of the concept a co-operation between SCHWANK and the users takes place for an early-integrated development.
