The program gave me the tools and taught me the principles needed to resolve conflict, on a personal or professional level. Mireille Allain, Civilian Member Career Manager Atlantic Region, Royal Canadian Mounted Police I registered in the TPN program at the urging of my supervisor since it would most likely be useful in my professional role as a project coordinator in a partnership of very diverse interests. Little did I know that I would use this course as much in my private life as in my professional one. The instructors created the most supportive environment for us to learn the skills of communication, facilitation, mediation and negotiation through practice and debriefing. Most notably I learned practical skills that are very effective in helping to resolve conflict, and that are easy to apply. Professional Development Seminars SEMINAR DESCRIPTIONS Human Resources Attract and Recruit Finding and keeping new employees for the organization is a continuing challenge for today s human resources departments. This session addresses the entire recruitment and selection process, from selecting appropriate recruitment methods and strategies to developing the selection process. You will gain skills in advertising, systematic resume screening, interview techniques and insight into the latest evaluation methodologies. Compensation and Benefits To many people compensation means pay. Anything else an employer might provide is often considered so minor that is called a fringe benefit. The reality however, is very different most employers make benefits an important part of the total compensation package and use it increasingly as a tool to attract, retain and engage key employees. This session will focus on the importance of compensation and benefits in the overall HR strategy; the concept of total rewards; the legal framework of benefits administration in Canada and how to establish wages and salaries. Cultural Diversity in the Workplace It is said that many managers feel that they are treading new territory as they lead teams made of individuals from different cultures, diverse mixes, and differing demographics. This signals a lack of understanding of the techniques required to manage diverse teams - which can lead to managers being less efficient and effective. This in turn can cause the team member motivation, satisfaction levels and productivity to drop due to the lack of knowledge and skills needed to lead diverse teams. This seminar will provide insight on how managers can attract, recruit, integrate, retain and motivate qualified employees from divers origins. Employment Law Having a basic knowledge of the legislative framework relating to the employee-employer relationship is essential for human resources professionals today. This session is designed to familiarize you with how the law impacts human resources management. Delivered by a managing partner from a leading law firm, you will be introduced to laws and regulations regarding human rights, employee standards, occupational health and safety, pay equity, diversity, and harassment. Facilitation Skills Develop your facilitation skills and improve your ability to manage group discussions, make decisions, or solve problems as a team. You will learn how to develop a facilitation plan, engage participants in a structured discussion, manage and encourage engagement, choose appropriate decision-making and problemsolving tools, build consensus and commitment to action, and address common facilitation challenges. Labour Relations If you are a human resources professional working in a unionized environment it is important to understand the union-management relationship. This session will provide insight on the structure of Canadian unions, the reasons why workers join unions, the legal principles relating to collective bargaining, negotiating a union contract and how unions affect the human resources management environment. Organizational Effectiveness What is the role of human resources management in your organization? This session will give you an understanding of the 6 key components of HR planning and the 8 key components for job and organization design. You will be introduced to the HR Professionals Capabilities Profile and the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) certification process. 18

Professional Development Seminars Performance Management Systems Performance management is critical to the meeting of an organization s business goals. In this session, you will discuss the importance of employee appraisal as well as issues that influence selection of a performance appraisal system. You will also become familiar with methods for avoiding rater bias and how to give an effective performance review. Respectful Workplace Today s workplaces have evolved considerably with regards to the prevention and responses to incidents of harassment and bullying. Employers are legally bound to provide workplaces where employees can work without the threat of inappropriate and disrespectful conduct and should such behaviours present themselves, managers and supervisors need to be equipped to intervene appropriately. This workshop focuses on how employers, managers, supervisors and others can create or contribute to respectful workplaces. Retention Finding talent is one thing, keeping them is another. Almost 50% of new hires leave an organization within the first seven months. For human resources professionals or business owners, it is important to understand how to engage a new employee right from the beginning. To that end, we are very excited in bringing this series of prestigious executive leadership communication seminars from The Humphrey Group. The Humphrey Group was established in 1988. Today they are North America s premier leadership communications firm. They teach communication skills exclusively through the lens of leadership. And they teach leadership specifically as it can be demonstrated through communication. Communication for the Senior Leader Speaking with Persuasion, Power and Presence Communication for the Senior Leader explores the fundamentals of effective leadership communication at the most senior levels of organizations. In attending, senior managers and executives will strengthen their ability to inspire others every time they speak. Participants will learn how to navigate the complex political environments that are today s organizations. Participants will receive personal feedback during the program, including videotaped feedback on their presence. Speaking as a Leader The ability to speak with clarity, conviction, and influence is critical to leadership. To be truly effective, leaders must be able to inspire action every time they speak from formal and informal presentations to conference calls, one-on-one conversations, impromptu discussions, and Q&A sessions. Speaking as a Leader meets this goal by enabling participants to speak as polished, inspirational leaders in every interaction. In attending Speaking as a Leader, participants will strengthen their ability to consistently: Approach communication with the intent to inspire action. Speak with clarity and conviction in every interaction Communicate a powerful message that reflects their leadership thinking Support their message using a clear, logical structure Close with a clear call to action Plan effectively for critical conversations Structure their thinking on the fly in impromptu discussions Speaking as a Leader features small groups where the ratio of participants to instructors is typically capped at 8:1. This is designed to ensure ample personal feedback and coaching throughout the session. Participants will identify an important upcoming communication opportunity and use this as the foundation for a script they will create. They will be videotaped delivering their script and will receive feedback on both content and delivery. They will also role-play both planned and impromptu conversations and a Q&A session, and will receive feedback on their work in each of these settings.
