Theory of Operation...Capacitive Proximity Sensors Active surface Sensing flag RC-oscillation circuit Signal analyzer Switch amplifier Fig. Capacitive proximity sensor makeup I U Damped Fig. Damped vs. undamped materials The most important reduction factors for capacitive proximity sensors are: iron, earthed.0 water.0 (corn) 0...0.6 (moisture content %) wood 0...0.9 glass 0...0.7 oil 0. PVC 0. PE 0.7 ceramic material 0. The reduction factor depends on the water content of the material. Sensing flag Undamped Fig. Reduction factors for capacitive proximity sensors EMC-overview s n About Capacitive Proximity Sensors The active element of a capacitive proximity sensor is formed by two metallic electrodes positioned much like an "opened" capacitor (see Fig. ). Electrodes A and B are placed in the feedback loop of a high frequency oscillator. When no target is present, the sensor s capacitance is low, therefore the oscillation amplitude is small. When a target approaches the face of the sensor, it increases the capacitance of the capacitor. This increase, in return, increases the amplitude of oscillation. The amplitude of oscillation is measured by an evaluating circuit that generates a signal to turn the output ON or OFF. Capacitance (C) is a function of the surface area of either electrode (A), the distance between the electrodes (d), and the dielectric constant of the material (e) between the electrodes. Test Standard Product Generic SICK Standard Standard Capacitive EN 6097-5- EN 5008- Sensors Electrostatic EN 6000-- kv cd / 8 kv ad* kv cd78 kv ad* 7 kv cd/ad* Discharge ESD (IEC 000--) HF radiated EN 6000-- V/m 0 V/m < 5 V/m (IEC 000--) 80... 000 MHz 80... 000 MHz 80... 000 MHz HF wire EN 6000--6-0 V > 0 V conducted (IEC 000--6) 0,5... 80 MHz Burst EN 6000-- kv kv kv (IEC 000--) Surge IEC 55-5 kv, 500 Ohm -.5 kv, 500 Ohm *cd = contact discharge ad = air discharge When a conductive target enters the sensor s field, it forms a counter electrode to the active face of the sensor, thus decreasing the distance between the electrodes (d), and increasing the average surface area (A) of the electrodes. The capacitance with a metal target present is always greater than the capacitance of the circuit in the absence of the target. Reduction factors for different metals are not a consideration when using capacitive sensors (see Fig. ). When a non-conductive target enters the sensor s field, it acts as an electrical insulator between electrodes. The dielectric constant of the material (e symbol) is a measure of its insulation properties. All liquids and solids have a greater dielectric constant than air (e symbol = ). Therefore, the capacitance with a non-metallic target present is always greater than the capacitance of the circuit in the absence of the target. This change is nevertheless very small, so only a short sensing range can be achieved. The nominal sensing ranges refer, as with inductive sensors, to a metal target (mild steel). On different materials, different sensing ranges apply. 6 INDUSTRIAL SENSORS CATALOG www.sickusa.com 70807-008 SICK, Inc.
