1 ABOUT INTERACTIVE TRAIL REPORTS The Interactive Trail Reports (ITR) site provides snowmobiling enthusiasts with the most accurate Trail Network and Trail Status information available from the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC). Trail status information is updated regularly to reflect the current trail conditions. Check the site often to ensure a safe and pleasant riding experience. Users can easily toggle back and forth between the trail network and the trail status. Geographic search, as well as pan and zoom functionality, allow users to define and view the exact map area they want to ride. Users can access individual trail information, create routes or display predefined routes such as the Algonquin Park loop. Points of Interest such as gas stops or restaurants (sponsors) can be displayed. Before you start, you must agree to the terms and conditions (a cookie set on a user s system will control how often you need to click-through the disclaimer).
2 INTERFACE The Interactive Trail Reports interface has five main areas: 1) Map Panel: The topographic base map and the OFSC trail network. 2) Map Control: Tools for defining the geographic extents of the map (panning and zooming), and tools for toggling the trail status and/or legend on and off. 3) Map Legend: A description of the map features include trail classifications and Points of Interest. 4) Map Search: A search box for locating a specific geographic location. 5) Sidebar: An information area where you can see the total amount (kilometers) of open trails, access social media and link to Interactive Trail Guide mobile applications. 1 MAP PANEL The Map Panel is the main workspace in which the topographic map is displayed. The initial view displays the entire province of Ontario, on which the OFSC snowmobile Trail Network is overlain. Trail route numbers are displayed on the network, the visibility of which is determined by zoom level. The map data is derived from Google. Minimum Zoom Maximum Zoom
2 MAP CONTROL Tools for controlling the map view (geographic extents) include panning and zooming. 2.1 Zooming There are 9 zoom levels available in the map display. By default the initial map display is at level 9 (all of Ontario). Zooming can be achieved by; 1) Clicking the + at the top of the zoom toolbar. To zoom out click the - at the bottom of the zoom toolbar. 2) Double-clicking in the map (zooms in at 1 level increments). 2.2 Panning Changing the map location (geographic area displayed) is achieved by Panning. Panning can be achieved by; 1) Clicking on the arrows on the pan button. 2) Clicking in the map and holding down the left mouse button and dragging the map area.
2.3 Select a Base Map Click the Base Map tab then select the type of base map you wish to display. Base maps include; Roads, Terrain, Satellite and hybrid (combination of Satellite and Road base map).
2.4 Select a Trail type to display Click the Trails tab then select the type of trail information you wish to display. Display either the OFSC trail network or the current trail status. By default trail status information is displayed. 2.5 Display Points of Interest on the Map Click the POI tab then select the type of Points of Interest to display on the map. Click a POI symbol to turn it on. Click again to turn it off. A tick mark will be display next to the POI s you have selected to display. By default Points of Interests are turned off. 2.6 Create a Route Click on a trail within the map (you will see a finger pointing icon when you are on the trail). A bubble will appear providing information about the trail segment you have selected. There will be an option to add to route. After clicking add to route the trail will be displayed under the My Route tab. The total distance of the selected route will be displayed next to the My Route tab. By clicking the My Route tab you can see all the segments you have selected. You have the option under the My Route tab of clearing the entire route and starting again. When you hover over each individual segment the segment will be high-lighted on the map. If you click-on a segment the segment and information bubble will be displayed. Within the bubble you will have to option to delete the individual segment.
2.7 Printing Click the Print tab to print the current view. Select the printer (if you have multiple printers configured for your computer. Note if the printer is a black and white only printer you will get a black and white preview; if the printer is a colour printer your preview will be in colour. On this screen you have several print options including; landscape or portrait orientation, the number of copies to print. Advanced printer options can be accessed by clicking advanced.
3 LEGEND The legend, also referred to as a key, is a guide to reading the map. It lists the different Trail types, Statuses and Points of Interest symbols found on the map. 4 MAP SEARCH On the top right of the Map Panel there is a text box with a magnifying glass. A location can be searched for by place name. Type the name of the place or address you are looking for in the search textbox and press enter. A result field will show itself with any relevant results. Clicking on a result will take you to that location the map. Clicking Add to Map in the location bubble will keep that marker on the map. Markers can be removed by clicking Remove from Map in the location bubble.
